Now that's how you keep somebody to building an engine. Shout out to the old-timer who helped you. A lot of people don't know how to do that.

Any time! Im not sold on it being a necessity for most street and light strip cars. I've always went dot to dot and not had an issue. If you take add timing one way, you take it away from the other. Maybe I can get a dyno someday! LOL

@@JustMoparJoe yeah, I don't think I will do this on mine initially, but seeing you do it gave me a better understanding of how the system works and how to verify if something seems off. Nerding out on it 🤓

Did I miss a step - your choice for pistons/ rings/ compression because these truck motors are different ?
@JustMoparJoe
@JustMoparJoe 3 жыл бұрын
Possibly. I used 100% stock bottom end except for rings and bearings. It’s probably 8/1 compression, but runs very well as a combination.

Since you were .05 off if you would have sent it without degreeing it how much power do you think/guess you would have lost i wounder? Is there a formula for how much power each degree off you loose? interesting stuff Joe and this is really where the magic happens in timing and TDC accuracy
@JustMoparJoe
@JustMoparJoe 3 жыл бұрын
So we did leave it. That half a degree could have came from my measuring. They used to make finer timing sets that allowed you to adjust a few degrees with a slot. But to know exactly what the best degrees for your combo would be is to have a dyno or a race track. I see that chevys make a two piece timing cover that has an O ring seal, that allows you to pop off a few screws and move your timing at the cam and crank. Need that technology in the Mopar world...that I can afford! Lol 😂
@SteveP-vm1uc
@SteveP-vm1uc 3 жыл бұрын
Actually if you want to check TDC on your balancer, you have to go about it the same as finding TDC for cam timing. .050 before and .050 After then set to the middle.. Why?? Because there is time that the piston is not moving at the top and the bottom. But the fact is, it doesn't matter other than to make sure your balancer has not spun. If your motor likes 34* or 40* or 32*, well, that's what it likes!! Most RB Mopars like 34-38* on street gas..
@JustMoparJoe
@JustMoparJoe 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve! That seems a bit high for my timing likings on today’s pump gas. My dad would always start at 28-32 with big blocks.

@JustMoparJoe

I would’ve never swapped my challenger over to a hemi if I knew the headaches and money it cost me. I tried going the cheap way on everything. Then had to buy twice. I could have built a big block that was street able with 600 hp for the money I have in the hemi.

Could have been more accurate by picking a random amount like .10 down, and rotating both directions to find absolute TDC between the two "down" spots. Thatd cover the dwell issue. You might have found the damper mark to be more or less accurate that way but at least you'd have a trusted mark once its all buttoned up. Ive had factory dampers off by 5-8° that showed no outward signs of spinning, so every time I had an engine apart, I always measured so I had a trustable mark to begin with. Of course every track nite the distributor was moved around often by ear or "buttdyno feel". So while I recorded numbers for a while, I eventually quit bothering and just winged it😁

Usually the track is my test. Try another couple degrees and look at the time slip. When it loses time, back it up! LOL

A little off topic but I have a 86 d100 and wondered if you might know what bucket seats I could get to replace the bench? Really enjoy your channel. You should get a hotline and charge $5 a question. I would be glad to pay it. Oh yeah, I am 6'5 would your tee shirts be long enough for me or would I be advertising your channel in a tube top? Lol.
