Jody's wife watching this be like "damn! I should have gotten him a Pagani"
@LucasKellis Жыл бұрын
I used to not want to associate with homage watches but as got older I actually realized how mature it is to accept them as viable pieces in a collection. For me at least here are some considerations I bet many others can relate to: 1. I’m young and have way more important things to focus on, getting married next year saving for a house, grad school. 2. Lots of hobbies. I have to split my fun money between watches, fishing, collectible cards, instruments 3. On the topic of instruments. There are many many many “off brand” versions of popular guitars, but I’ve never heard the term homage thrown around. I think this is because an instrument is a tool and we care about the specs and how it sounds. A watch is jewelry, not really a tool these days, and (not throwing shade) but I feel designating a watch as homage is just a way to emotionally justify your own purchase of 100s times more expensive jewelry.

It’s all just coping to justify cheating your way to status. You can get a ton of cheap original design in Seiko, Citizen, Casio etc. The only reason to get homages is to appear richer than you are, which isn’t very mature.

Very nice comparison. It's interesting to really see the subtle design differences, and see how elegant the Omega looks. If Pagani (and many of the other homage makers) went down the smaller and slimmer route, im sure their desirability would go up even more. Thanks Jody 😊

Great comparison Jody. The AR coating on your Aqua Terra blows my mind every time! I find the value vs worth thing and the law of diminishing returns so interesting. How much should you pay for something you don’t need but really like? I always find the arguments around homages a bit bewildering. Every industry has copies or inspired by designs of desirable products at lower price points. People like the fancy expensive thing but most can’t afford it so someone makes something that to a varying degree looks quite like the fancy thing and maybe functions similarly and sells it for less. From breakfast cereal to shoes to consumer electronics, that is how the world works. I’m not saying it’s ethically “right” or “wrong” but it is what it is. Some people would never own a homage watch (and that’s totally fine) and some people can’t or are unwilling to ever spend several thousand dollars on a watch (totally fine too).

This is an important video making an important point : luxury Swiss brands are running out of excuses for their mark up. The materials are visually matched, quality may vary but the price difference cannot be explained away like this. It makes a certain absurd sense that the Swiss brands pursue these outlandish technical endeavours in material research, trying to convince you that they have discovered Unobtainium and are making watch cases , not weapons out of it. Same old guff when they bang on about proprietary stainless steels and exotic gold mixes (my mother could tell you that unadulterated gold is surely the idea?).
@scottloudon143 жыл бұрын
Pagani does a credible job of copy and paste and in isolation looks nice. Somehow the 3:00 date window look unbalanced with the symmetrical case and horizontal dial. But then it could just be what I'm used to. The newer Cal 8900 Aqua Terra in 41's, fortunately have returned to 20mm lugs. Someone suggested the dial look dusty, it does plus the Omega horizontal dial varies line width giving a different light play. All little things but with an associated cost sort of a value added tax. Me I just wanted the slate color way and the box, don't forget the box!

No question the Pagani is the wrong AT to be comparing with - it's Corgeut and Phylida. The Corgeut white dial w/blue hands blew me away with how well it's executed - the faceted hands and indices catch the light in so many interesting ways, and the deep striped grooving in the dial was way more impressive than I expected, and makes it fun to look at from any angle. The case is surprisingly well-finished, including vertical brushing between the lugs. No A/R, but the flat sapphire lets the dial/indices/hand be the star of the show. There are three weaknesses of the Corgeut: (a) the SeaGull 1612 inside, which keeps pretty good time if you regulate it, but has a noisy, cheap-sounding rotor, and the hand-winding feels terribly cheap. (b) Only 50m water resistance (that it proudly states on its overly-wordy dial text). And (c) the false use of the word "Chronometer" on the dial text. Everything else about the watch cosmetically is so great - why did they have to overreach with that? Phylida builds an incredibly solid-feeling watch - and for still under $100 is a step up from the Corgeut. I have both the white and blue dial versions: both are well-finished. The grooves in the dial are not as deep as Corgeut's, but the quality of the indices and hands (again, faceted to catch the light) are great - even looking at them through a loupe. And Phylida provides a color-matched date wheel on the blue model for consistent text color on the dial. The NH35 inside means this is as solid an auto movement as you need, and the case provides 100m water resistance. A key upgrade is that Phylida also replicates the AT's domed sapphire crystal, which feels great and provides visual interest. I don't think you can beat Phylida for providing satisfying quality, and I don't know how they do it for the price.

As almost always, the FIRST thing you do when your Pagani arrives is change out the band. I actually love that about them. My reasoning: to get to their price point they HAVE TO cut corners somewhere. I can easily replace a band, so I am glad they do it there. Exception: Pagani actually did great with the band on the Tudor Black Bay homage. They use the same band on some of their other "premium" watches (and by premium, with Pagani, we are only talking about a buck 40), and it is decent. But on all other Paganis...just buy a band you like on the same day you buy the watch, and hope they arrive at the same time.

For the price difference you would hope (and expect) that there would be significant spec, QC and finishing differences. All watch enthusiasts and collectors would love the original watches. However, Homage watches are great to 1) get a decently spec'd, decently priced similar looking watch on your wrist for a price that is affordable to most people and 2) to get a feel for how the original will look and feel. I don't know how many times I have seen comments about people who started with cheap over priced watches (i.e. Daniel Daniel Wellington) or homages (i.e. Pagani) because they liked the look but how that then evolved into watch knowledge and collecting.

It would be interesting to see how the Phylida AT stacks up against those two.

Phylida is a bit thick but is clearly the best AT homage 👌

Heat gun or hairdryer for the screw links.

For the costs vs compromises, I wish Pagani would focus on some of the more iconic Seiko 5 designs that are slowly going away. If they would make an SNXS homage with the NH36 (hacking and hand-winding) and a not-crap bracelet, I'd buy one in every colorway.

Hello!!! Do you know of a Breitling Superocean Homage?

I want them to do a Speedmaster homage.

can't wait for the "Rolex Explorer I vs Pagani ". Problem is Pagani has to make the watch first :D

Hi Jody what’s your thoughts on the omega seamaster 300 ?
@gerrytemple50442 жыл бұрын
I don't believe I ever saw a review of a Corgeut or a Parnis from you which I even prefer over Pagani because of interesting model choices, more size variations and sometimes even with no-branded dials. Maybe you want to check them out? Cheers!

Great video, thank you! Speaking of Omega and Pagani: Could you consider doing a review of their seamaster 300 m professional with the wave pattern? Could be a real value monster.

Thanks for the great review! We are fans of the Pagani homage watches and looks like we will have to add this one. How is the weight of the watch?
