Glycine Combat Sub is absolutely terrific. I own many divers, and I find the Glycine to be one of the best deals in this price range. Swiss movement, sapphire crystal, milled clasp, and more importantly for me, a very slim profile at 10.6mm thick. Wears like a dream.
@han79022 жыл бұрын
36mm and 39mm models that came out in 2021 and 2022 made the combat sub even better. Both models add extra 100 meters water resistance, in compare to the 42mm model.

I like the Tissel subby homage, it has a clone glidelock on it which is nice. I lprefer it to the Phoibos, cause I can get it no date (I think the date ruins that phoibos), and a kermit option (and the green ceramic is actually nice and dark). The phoibos does have a cooler logo tho.

Not sure it matters to be honest. It's the easiest part of the watch to swap out and/or replace, both in terms of the aftermarket choices available and the actual swapping out of the bracelet. That makes it the least important factor in my purchasing decision in this relatively affordable price bracket. Once it's above $500 that's when I start to pay attention to the bracelet.
@frznrrfan.frznrrfan1025 жыл бұрын
@@PT111111 a good quality bracelet is nice and matters to me. If I drop 3-4 hundred on a watch I dont want to have to go on strapecode and spend another 100-150 on a quality bracelet with solid ends and milled clasps. Just my thoughts.

Great list Jody. Personally I reckon the Lorier Neptune deserves a spot in the list as it just scrapes in at US$399. It has vintage dimensions and aesthetics as well as being beautifully finished. The attention detail and passion is evident in nearly every aspect. They sell out within a couple of days but they restock every few months or so timing is everything when trying to purchase one.

@jarrodcilia5 жыл бұрын
@@mitchaelhollingsworth1698 When it comes to supply I reckon they are being sensible and sustainable. We've seen many microbrands fall into the trap of overstocking an item only to have it not sell and then have to reduce the price down just to move stock. By being sensible with their stocking levels, Lorier are not overstretching themselves and as a result they are able to continually sell out of their stock at the price they want to sell it at. For those interested in buying one, the best thing to do is to follow them on Instagram. They always post the exact dates and time they are restocking an item which will give you plenty of time to put aside some cash and put a reminder in your calendar. One other really nice touch they do is not waste the customers' money with some fancy box and packaging. Instead they use a standard simple cardboard box with the watch packed in a nice leather watch roll. Fancy boxes are nice, but they just end up in a drawer or cupboard somewhere. Like most collectors, I store my watches in a multi watch box or in winders. A leather watch roll is something that is actually useful, especially for those that travel around a bit.

One of your best videos Jody. I will have to watch this again. I did not take notes. My biggest problem with dive watches is the weight more than the size. I hate heavy watches yet dive watches are heavy. I know this must have taken you a lot of time to research. Seiko's keep going up in price. I remember when you could get a Padi for 250 dollars and SKS for 160.00 dollars. (USD) I like swiss ETA over SW-200 any day unless its sw-200-2 which does not have the gear wearing out problem. That is why some of these swiss watches are so cheap from the sw 200 being dumped because they know it has a flaw. Take care.

Hi there, I know you reviewed it recently but several of us in my field of work use the new Rotary Super 7 Automatic special edition- we have a very unique front line outdoors job overseas and polish off a ten week rotation with a fortnight's diving. It totally measures up and is good looking, ergonomic and superbly well made. It deserves not to be overlooked. I know the Seiko Atlas strictly speaking isn't a diver, it is an outdoor field watch with diver equivalent specs but it is also another winner- robust and capable, like a Marathon watch at a fraction of the cost!

Supposedly the prices on SKX are high because it's been discontinued. This is according to LongIslandWatch and the fact that Seiko is releasing the Seiko 5's with the skx case. Heimdallr do a very nice variation of the 6105, the case is more Turtle than Willard in outline but has the Willard style crown guards. It's from their Custom-made range and comes with either the PT5000 or if you can find one a Swiss made ETA 2824-2. Case finishing is better than the NH35A variations but it's only available on the waffle style rubber strap. The lume is Lumibrite standard, easily visible thru the night. Obviously a bit more expensive and not quite a Captain Willard homage but I think that makes it a little more unique but a bargain for £250 ish for the ETA version which performs within COSC tolerance on my example. The Merkur is also a standout, case is great. Really interesting video, thanks.

Hey Jody, I've watched a fair amount of your reviews and recomendations I find them great. They're are always very clear, informative and entertaining and it's nice to see a variety of watches being shown. One thing I struggle to understand (as I'm new to buying watches) is, if you buy an affordable automatic movement watch say less than £500. It's not accurate at all and would need constant resetting as the margin for accuracy seems to be something like -20 / +45 which is a massive margin. Wouldn't you be better off buying a Eco drive / Quartz movement for far less to achieve the accuracy? I know the affordable automatics are very enticing but for the accuracy, I don't think it's worth it.

It had a distinctive approach to the design of the markers, like (but not at all like) the sharktooth Monsters and it's nickname was well deserved. Looks great! Not saying 'you've ommited these from your list', by any means. I guess I'm only reminiscing with the dive watch appreciation society, ha.

Own a few of the Samurai after learning after market Turtle bezels can be swapped. Helm are great. Flipped all of them for same price I paid when I decided they were just too heavy. Glycines I also flipped after owning several of the Combat Subs -they need a dial design like Helm uses -they are either boring or too hard to read. I just ordered the Phoibos PY007 it's a little small but has so many great features for the price. I also have the same Merkur turtle homage and the frustrating delivery time Kraken H2 that I'm likely going to sell. The Zelos Swordfish looks great ....but the clasp. Comment about Battle of the bracelets is a great suggestion! This is a great idea. A micro adjust clasp or Rolex style glide lock are kind of mandatory for me now after using them on most of my watches. It seems once you start going up in price there are some nice options (Mido OS, Certina DS Action, CW C65 Trident ect) that are lower profile and no sharp edges (unlike the Strapcode divers extension clasp). Ginault will fit some Seiko watches but there are some modifications or spring bar swaps to figure out and unfortunately they have doubled in price since I got one for my Halios.

Enjoyed the video i picked up the Glyncine Golden Eye for around 340USD on eBay @ the Glycine -direct the price varies from time to time and you get the Glycine warranty this is not a gray market watch I also picked up an Airman 42 GMT also under 400USD

This is a great list. Lots of great watches. Personally, I would say the Regular Seiko Turtle is another contender of you like the size. Certain ones can be had for under $400. It also has a day/Date which nothing on this has. I thought Ibwould mention that Deep Blue has several divers under $400, especially with there “Deep” code. I have heard of some people really disliking them, while others really like them. Spec-wise, they are par with the other watches on this list.

You picked some very nice watches. I particularly like Glycine. I have both the Sb and the Airman GMT. By the way, Seiko is discontinuing the SKX.

In addition to the 6105 homage, check out sharkey skx, seiko nh35 sapphire, 200m and just $130

I'm honestly surprised the Lorier Neptune V1 and Traska Freediver aren't on this list. If they had a date complication, I'd totally save up money to get one! Nice video, Jody!

Your list is top-notch per usual mate. But... Forgive me if I've missed it, but have you considered Deep Blue? Lots of choices but the NATO diver and Master 1000 diver lines are the bargain sweets spots. Excellent specs. Massive choices in case sizes 40, 42, 44, dial color and build, straps, bracelets, etc.. Very good regular pricing with occasionally ridiculous bargain deals (40% off labor day sale this week!)

Great video thank you! I never knew about some of these other watch makers. I LOVE the Helm watches! And the Mini Turtle omg! I’m already a Seiko addict, but I gotta get a mini turtle…thanks again!

I've had an Orient Ray2 for a couple of years. GREAT WATCH! But that "Hard Mineral" crystal now looks like it survived WW2 ! A-bombs and all! Our local crooks want to charge me such REDICULOUS fees, just to pop in a new one that, I'm now building a "Watch Repair Shop" of my own! I can heartily recommend Orient Divers. Mine takes to the water like a homesick mermaid!

Definitely check out the Triton. I picked one up a month ago and love it. The bracelet is very nice but the clasp is cheap. So instead of replacing the whole thing I only upgraded the clasp with a Strapcode diver clasp.

The TOP1 diver under $400 is the DEEP BLUE NATO 300 (300Meters deep resistance). Same look as the SKX007 but with much better improvements and with it's gaz escape valve like the ROLEX Sea Dweller, that make's it a REAL DIVER watch.

Great vid. This would be pretty close to my list too. You should check out deep blue. They've been around forever and produce great watches. They used to be larger only, but recently they've expanded to 40mm divers. But the BEST part is the price. There is always a coupon code for 40% off -- right now it's BLUE. You can get a 40mm nh35, 300m diver with 120 click bezel, sapphire, and any color face (even colored full lume or multicolored abalone) for $150 on strap for $200 on a nice bracelet. And you don't have to take any risks on Ali. (No affiliation, just feel like they should get a mention.)

perdendosi Great overlooked brand! My 40mm 1500m Sea Quest is the bomb!
@perdendosi5 жыл бұрын
Oh, you should also check out Bernhardt. They're one of the original microbrands, but still in existence. Their entry level divers float around the $300 mark with Miyota 9015s (their older models with 8200 series movements were closer to $200), and they're known for their excellent finishing and superlative (can I use that word?) bracelets -- especially at the price point. They've upped their design game a lot in the last couple of years and I think they get overlooked because they're not the "latest and greatest" and they don't go chasing reviewers and influencers. (No offense, Jody.) Seriously -- look them up! www.bernhardtwatch.com/

Well Jody, as a man with tiny little baby wrists, I am going to have to pass on all of these. Too big. Too big! If and when some suitable replacement for the skx013 comes to market, PLEASE review it. The skx013 is just about the ideal form factor for me. If it was hackable/windeable, then it would tick all of my boxes. I think it may be several years before we see another such small form factor dive watch at a modest price. I will probably have upgraded the movement in my skx013 by then. The alignment and chaptering on my copy is tits on. I'm a lucky boy. Got an aftermarket bracelet for it too.

Have you tried the mini turtle mate? Lug to lug of like 44mm from memory. Wears well!
@ivermec-tin6665 жыл бұрын
@@JustOneMoreWatch 42mm w, 44mm lug to lug. 42 is going to present a lot larger than 38. I would really have to try it on, but Mark at Long Island Watch indicated that it is not officially offered in the USA yet... I don't think I am going to find one at a brick and mortar store anytime soon. Haven't seen it reviewed by any other baby wrist man yet, either... Gonna stick with the skx013 until this size queen fashion craze dies out in a few years.

@Motor City Cobra Well, the day after I land a sugar mamma I'm gonna be all over that! Omega's are very pretty, but out of my price range, unless I look at vintage.
@ivermec-tin6665 жыл бұрын
@Motor City Cobra I will never carry a balance forward on a credit card again in this lifetime. 2008 cured me of that. I spend only what I have in pocket, as my grandparent's did. This whole economic system is a house of cards. It can collapse at any time, and it will do so without prior notice. My experience of political and economic corruption has made me very conservative in my use of credit. I have seen the man behind the curtain. Actually, there is a whole army of men behind the curtain. They lead charmed lives at the expense of the little people. I only buy what is in my budget. This is a virtue. I want a beautiful dive watch. I do not need one. It is a luxury. I can wait however many months or years it takes to save for one. If I had the level of disposable income that you do, then I might follow your example. But, currently, I do not. Hopefully, that will change in future. But, then I would be saving to buy land and build a house... If I had a house, then I could have a dog, and that would make me much happier than a watch. Even an ugly dog would make me happier than a beautiful watch. Priorities, I guess.
