I had the same black aqua terra Jody....such a beautiful watch. I always wanted a blue one though. So I traded it for the blue 8900. Ended up buying it from a grey market place online. Probably the most well known one. I won’t name them (u know who they r) but after taking the plastic off, the next day I noticed 3 large specs of dust sitting right in the middle of the dial. I don’t know how I missed it. Took the watch into my local watch guy to blow the dust out. Wasn’t going to have a grey market warrantee try to sort it out. Watch guy successfully got the dust out. Watch was back on my wrist 96 hours later. After a couple hours, I noticed a light colored splotch/blemish where the dust was. It looked to be on the dial. Cutting the story short, I definitely understand the feeling of someone messing up an aqua terra. It stinks having to correct a poor job. I learned many lessons along the way cause I made every mistake in the book. Including buying a 4K dollar watch from an online grey market website.

Jody, I pick up the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra for myself a few years ago, in the midnight blue (date at 3 O’clock) with the polish centre links, but knew that I also wanted to wear the watch on occasion on the blue leather strap. I did a bit of negotiating with the Omega boutique (Oxford Street London) and came away with a fantastic Omega and my “free” XL leather strap. The watch looks nice on the bracelet but I agreed it would look even better with brushed links vice the polished (centre links) but when I put it on the beautiful blue Omega leather strap it looks out of this world. A true keeper and one of the most versatile timepieces I have ever seen or owned (from the seaside, to casual, to a suit and tie, as well as a tuxedo) it is truly a one watch for all occasions.

Polished middle links are the reason why I went for the first gen. model. And I did the right thing, the watch is awesome and it serves me as a daily wear/beater, but also for some more formal occasions. And I like the plain black dial, very understated but nevertheless beautiful. So, that's what I suggest to anyone : if you don't like the blingy parts of newer bracelets, just go for the older model, instead of hating or butchering the fine watch.

Funny how things remind you of things. I've been wearing watches since grade school, and I remember on numerous occasions sitting in class bored, deliberately reflecting sunlight off my cheap watches onto things in the classroom or other kids. At some point I guess anti-reflective coatings became ubiquitous, and I forgot how much of a distraction reflections used to be.

Having owned this watch (42mm) for almost ten years I can't help but agree with all your comments - the strap has been the most frustrating part of my relationship - I'm a NATO fan and have a drawer full of options, settling this month for a black leather strap which alternates with velcro on green webbing and a heavy recycled fire-hose strap with brass fittings, which has a thin strip behind the watch hence it all sits flush. As a surveyor, keen cyclist and motorcyclist who occasionally takes the kayak down the river I can't bring myself to wear a traditional bracelet or strap in case one of the pins fails or springs, in which instance the watch would be lost forever! Constantly pondering the Speedy, but since they're not waterproof I have reservations! Great review, glad you like the AT - mine is also a daily wear and has never, not ever let me down!! Best wishes, Daniel, York UK

I have a seamaster 300, brushed stainless steel. A few things I do not like about it. 1. The luminescence goes away over the years, and the only way to restore it to ‘new’, requires a new dial, which costs 400-500$ according to Omega. 2. The watch stops functioning after around 5 years. 3. The bracelet gets deep scratched just by touching my desk; the a standard hospital desk, so not hard surface. One thing I like about Omega: one flat rate fee to fix the watch to brand new specs. They replace anything inside that’s damaged, oil it up, and calibrate it to chronometer standard.

Hi Jody, great story! I have the blue 38.5mm Aqua Terra from the previous generation with the framed date window (aka the Skyfall) and wholeheartedly agree that these are beautiful watches, absolutely stunning. The older generation has the brushed mid links but it'd be hard to find that bracelet alone at a reasonable price. It also has the calibre 8500 which I find runs fast during the cold winter months, so this movement definitely has some quirks to it but still an awesome watch!

Jody - what a lovely journey. So glad that it has a happy ending for you! I recently purchased a 2007 Aqua Terra with the 2500c co-axial. I am really looking forward to seeing it in person (I have only seen pictures so far). I have several vintage Omegas (love them all), but this will be my fist modern.

Just received an AT41 MM. Everything you say is so true. Mine has the date at 6 and the horizontal stripes, it is far more beautiful than the explorer, gains lots of compliments and feels ten million dollars when I put it on and it fits any situation. Like you I’m an Omega fan, owning a Speedmaster and a Planet Ocean too. With a couple of G Shocks, a Hamilton Khaki 42 and a Breitling B2 (I work as a pilot, hence Speedy and B2) in my collection I can’t see the desire for Rolex, their pricing or ridiculous waiting lists. I’ve a funny feeling the rest of the collection may be a touch neglected for quite a while. After 3 months with it I find the AT perfect.

@@jessISaRicePrincess the SM300 is stunning, and I prefer the white dial I’ve got ridiculously thick wrists and the PO fits better. The latest Explorer looks minuscule on me!

Your wife has good taste. I just declared the AT my first grail-watch. Current model, grey dial, blue seconds-hand, on a bracelet. Now all I need is roughly €3,700 ... :D

Purchased the AT 8900 41mm with blue rubber strap this week. My first Omega and first luxury watch. I remembered your video and was thinking about messaging you on your long term thoughts on the watch. Perfect timing!

Dear Friends, I actually have this watch, or an earlier version from about 2010. Mine does have the co-axial movement, and a dark blue "sunburst" face. Mine came with a leather strap, as shown in this video. The watch has always been extremely accurate; I really don't remember having to re-set it, unless I had let it wind down. However...it did come to a dead stop after about six (?) years. It then languished in a drawer till a year ago, when I sent it in for servicing at the official Omega repair facility in New Jersey, USA. They said the watch would take about four months to get it back to me, which it did. The overhaul was expensive--about $750 USD, and a new leather strap with deployment buckle was another $350. Ouch! I was given these figures up front, so there was no surprise about the fees. However, to fix any watch, they have to take it entirely apart, find the problem, mike (micrometer) down and microscopically check parts, clean, reassemble, and relube the movement, check it for time-keeping accuracy, and then re-install the movement in the case along with new seals, and finally check it for water resistance. When you consider the organization required to do all of this, you see that you are really getting a bargain. My watch came back all polished up: "Clean, bright, and lightly oiled," as they used to say. I put a Nato strap on it to save the leather band from expensive wear, and I have truly enjoyed this Omega as an every day "beater" with a touch of class. It is a genuine all-rounder; I even wear it to the gym some days! If you can get your hands on one of these, I highly recommend the Seamaster Aquaterra. It is a lovely, accurate, and robust timepiece. Thanks for reading! Ed near Washington, D. C., the capitol of the USA.

May I ask you? Is it a 8500 movement? Omega seems to have had some issues with that particular movement. It seems that they underestimated the amount and time of lubricants, also being a Sapphire sandwich it was highly susceptible to magnetism (except for the bumblebee) those issues seems to be sorted out with the 8800, but power reserve took a beating, down to 55h.

I have the blue one. Sometime the dial is blue, sometime is black, it depends on the light. I don't understand why you should prefer black, when having the blue one is like having both watches!
