The Persona 4 Anime, the original game, Is actually the perfect adaptation from Videogame to Anime because it adds more context and explores new scenarios not seeing in the game, on top of the protagonist, Yu Narukami having the best dialogue in the entire cast. It also explores episodes with interesting dynamics like "What if the group split out making the protagonist feel absolutly depressed" or "What do other characthers think of the protagonist WHEN HE'S DOING ALL THE SIDEQUEST AT THE SAME TIME" That shit is AMAZING, No other Persona adaptation does this and is really sad, because P4 Animation is legit one of the best ways to expirience Persona 4, something that no other adaptation of the franchise has done since then.

Actually Joker in game has more personality than one would think. On his own he is quiet and reserved in reality, meanwhile in the metaverse he clearly enjoys what he does as a phantom thief and is flamboyant as fuck. Which the anime COULD have worked into its format (heck P4’s did it with Yu Narukami). The problem is that whoever made it was too lazy to properly flesh out Joker’s personality into the anime format to make it work properly, and all the blank slate bits of his in game that needed to be changed accordingly were left as they are, and all the characters still end up speaking for himself when the anime COULD have let him do it all on his own.

While I haven't seen much of p3 movies (trying to finish the game first) The main reason the P4A anime is amazing because it feels like a love letter and a somewhat extention to the original persona 4 game While it is the same plot as P4, it adapts everything really well to the point where some scenes in the anime I'd argue is better than how it is portrayed in the game (Nanako and Dojimas relationship, the car chase, Revealing of the killer, the choice in December) These scenes take advantage of the fact this is an anime adaptation and changes them up to either make it flow better or expand on our characters It's also just really really funny

16:46 - Thanks for reminding me that the Mementos Missions manga is a thing. It’s a spin-off manga about the Phantom Thieves tackling some new PhanSite requests and other Phantom Thief things that mostly weren’t in the games shortly prior to dealing with Sae’s Palace. We see stuff like Joker being a sleep-deprived shambling wreck, the Phantom Thief girls working at maid cafe (and sucking at it), Sae putting her discussed but never demonstrated martial arts training to use, and Mika of all characters being likable for once. 3:50 so fun fact. The reason the original Mario movie was so different from the games was actually explained by the directors. A very important scene at the end was cut out by the producers, where two executives from Nintendo show up at Mario and Luigi’s apartment and want to hear their story because it ends up on the news. The point is that they adapt what was told to them by the brothers into the first Mario video game, which loses a lot of the details. The movie would then be framed as, “what really happened” with Mario and Luigi against Bowser, and that the NES game didn’t tell the whole story.

I think Super Mario Bros the movie is alright considering it had everything going against it. It's a live action movie based on a very rudimentary story, made in the early 90s. As an SMB movie its not what people were looking for, it fails as that. But as an insane 'how does this movie exist', wacky sci fi fantasy comedy adventure its pretty fun if you don't take it seriously. And I think thats mainly the problem, people take that stuff waaaay too seriously. I mean for kids in the 90s, fair enough, it's nothing like the games, so we were confused and hated it. But I think they did the best with what they were tasked with, and the world in the film is definitely inventive and the sets and special effects are pretty cool. I'm glad it exists.

The Ace Attorney anime actually did start leaning away from the main plot in season 2! A mixture of all the flashback episodes and the completely original case they created help it feel more like it's own thing, and those small changes really made it shine in my eyes. In fairness P3 is a much more basic story in general. I think it's the BEST story, but best doesn't mean complex. P3 focuses on the main team and fighting Shadows, along with overcoming apathy and depression. Heavy stuff but not that complex. Movie 1 starts with the MC literally asking why you'd be afraid of dying, and end of the movies is the whole team fighting desperately to survive and save people. That's really not hard to translate. P4 is more impressive to me honestly. I don't like P4 as much as P3, like at all just to be clear. One this that the games do is that, even if you can still make the protagonist a reflection of yourself, they still have their own personalities in some way. Maya (Persona 2 Eternal Punishment protag) and Tatsuya (Persona 2 Innocent Sin protag) both protagonist at some point, but they not only have a game where you can see their personalities, but their dialogue options leave clear that maya is a really positive and old sister type of character, and tatsuya is reserve, calm, and with clear passions (Motorcycle boy). Makoto (Persona 3 protag) is clearly represent as an emo and introvert in both games and anime, and Narukami (Persona 4 protag) is represent in the anime is so iconic that some scenes in the anime are almost or even more iconic that the game counterparts just because narukami alone (Kings game best example). That’s why Akira (or ren) is so disappointing in the anime, because they already know who to give some personality to previous protags without losing the immersive yourself part.

Strange thing about this is that while Joker's thoughts and actions are determined by the players, his general body language, his 'memorable' dialogue options (just the fact that Joker has the potential to say certain things says a lot about him), and the main story + possible endings gives more than enough to build a cohesive character (conceptual spoilers for one of the game's possible endings used as a point of discussion if you expand the comment, though definitely not anything that would spoil the entire game, just as a heads up). If I were to say "Joker is a good person, but loves to show off and act smug and often take risks that can put himself or others in danger." I'm pretty sure most people would get behind me, and while that alone isn't exactly a unique character it is enough to work with and make a perfectly serviceable main character that you can build on. If you want some extra drama you could even sprinkle in some extra entitlement and ego growth over the story for him to struggle with (as one of the possible endings involves him pretty much selling everyone out to stay in the spotlight as a hero), and I'm sure that most people would agree to that as well.

The main problem always comes down to length. Persona 5 and Danganronpa both should have been *at least* two season long stories. And even that might not be enough, depending on how long said seasons are. But, unfortunately, I don't think being faithful (or even good) adaptations were the priority with these projects. They're there to sell more merchandise to fans and drum up interest in the games to people who hadn't experienced them before. And...it kinda worked. I never would have even known about the Danganronpa games if I hadn't watched the anime first. So...in that sense, I guess it's worth it. But....man I still wish these adaptations had more care put into them. They really could have been nice alternatives for people who wanted to experience the stories but didn't want to play 100+ hour long RPGs and visual novels in order to do so. I have so many friends that I know would love Persona and Danganronpa, but I also know that the only good way to experience those characters and stories is through a medium that they wouldn't particularly care for.

I agree with everything you said about the P5 anime, but I also gotta say the P4 anime is really good and surprisingly funny. The still have plenty of interactions with the characters, the dungeons are explored more, there are quite a few new scenes that were original and not reused from the game, the main character has a personality and is a chad, and the pacing feels way better since we are given more time to focus on the main cast instead of just copying every second of the original game. The MC there will work on stuff like origami cranes, personal reading, or the Beef Bowl Challenge as other characters are carrying the main exposition to show how he's multitasking like any good Persona player does. Imagine how much better the scenes of the Thieves planning or puzzle solving would be if Joker is shown to be fiddling with lockpick crafting, or practicing some of his flourishes, or summoning a Persona he recently recruited and checking on them. I think the biggest problem is that a lot of the teams making adaptations of gaming franchises don't understand that there are a lot of aspects of games that only work because they're in games. The silent protagonist is something you see pretty commonly in RPGs, and it works because they're a stand-in for the player. They don't need a clearly defined personality because the player is their personality, but that isn't something that you can do in an adaptation. There's no interactivity for the viewer to connect to the main character, and so the protagonist who can be anyone instead becomes the protagonist who is no one

I agree with p5 the animation being terrible, but p4's original anime is really good, p4 has a much simpler plot and focuses more on characters, I don't want to spoil too much from the game but there was less that they had to cover and they still did a pretty good job with the main plot. Hell they even gave the protagonist an arc that wasn't in the game. It's also legitimately a very funny show, honestly funnier than the game, the english dub is fantastic as well, especially johnny yong bosch as yu. They also do manage to mostly capture the same emotions the game did, a scene near the end gets me to cry every time in the game no matter how much I play it, and it got me in the show, hell there was even a new scene that got to me. It's definitely not a replacement for the game I still think the game is better, social link characters are much more fleshed and like most megaten games p4g is a really fun rpg, so definitely play the game first, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the show after playing it. As for p4g the animation I haven't seen it, but I haven't heard the best things about it, it only has 13 episodes and focuses on the new character in Golden that no one really cared about.

The P4 anime was great, Infact it made one of the most impactful moments in the game way better(Hospital scene) I wonder why P5 felt so forced to be the way it was, most people expected something similar to the Daybreakers OVA and honestly, if the anime felt more like that or even some of the more down to earth stuff like Kawakami trying on swimsuits in her hotel before Haru walks in, it would have been at the very least memorable

I could see a P5 adaption working if they had someone like Edgar Wright as director and actually get people who care about Persona. Hell they could use the different worlds to their advantage, like maybe the real world is live action while the palaces are 2d or 3d or the real world is 3d and the palaces are 2d. So many ideas the people doing the anime didn’t have time to think of

1:13 In the US anyway. Bad anime adaptations are usually an exception and there's plenty of anime that didn't even bother adapting the games or only did so loosely, like the Mario, Sonic and Mega Man OVAs. Also sort of the Animal Crossing movie but I mean, how do you even adapt Animal Crossing? Pokemon was more of a loose adaptation too and Yo-Kai Watch didn't even try (though the first movie was pretty close to the plot of the second game and a million times better than the anime series itself (this became a trend for the movies), which is honestly kind of sad but the Shadowside anime is good and Y School Heroes is just okay) and Mega Man NT Warrior also loosely adapted the games (the manga is closer to the games but also a loose adaptation).

One adaptation I really like is Hyperdimension Neptunia: The Animation. The showrunners clearly understood the stories, characters, world and appeal of the two canon games at the time, MK II and Victory, and told their own original version of events that naturally brough about similar conflicts and moments from the games. While one scene in the anime might be shot for shot from the game, the before and after of the scene are completely different while still feeling natural.

General consensus on the Persona Anime Adaptations: P3 Movies: Decent to Really good. Depends on if you liked certain changes, and your tolerance for the pacing due to a 4 Movie limit. >> Example; Myself and many others are not the biggest fan of the characterization of the MC, as I feel like they went a bit "to hard" in one aspect you could read of his character. Plus it doesn't even remotely match any other adaptation of MC's personality in other P3 media (Manga/Audio Drama's/PQ1&2/Stage Play/or even P3D despite "having the same name").-- However many people also love this ver. of the P3MC. However, I...like many people, love the additions of scenes for main cast characters that lacked screen time in game. Or alternate versions of scenes to better suit a movie format. Animation is stellar, and OST is always good. ------------------ P4 The Animation: Very well liked. Has it's issues, but they keep the charm from the game & main cast & expand on it full throttle. So much so that most people don't even mind the flaws. LMAO P4 Golden The Animation: Overall disliked like P5's adaptation. If I recall there are specific episodes that aren't bad. However the overall quality & writing is much worse than P4A. ------------------ P5 The Animation: Pretty much universally hated outside of the Music & the Akechi specific Specials/OVA's (as they came out before P5 Royal), for a lot of the same reasons you listed here. Though tbh Joker in P5/P5R arguably has more personality in-game than the anime (kinda feels like they just gave him all the default "neutral" game answers as his "personality"). LMAO

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva and Kat’s Mystery Solving Files were the one-two punch that got me to try out the Layton games. Currently making my way through Diabolical Box after beating Curious Village, and I’m really enjoying it. I think what makes Eternal Diva work is that it’s basically a Layton game, with puzzles baked into the world while solving a mystery, but it tells it’s own original, canon story, with some minor structure changes to have it better fit the movie medium. But the format of the games makes it fit for adaptation since you can actually still participate in the puzzles and mystery anyway due to the Visual Novel-esque style of the games. As for Kat’s Mystery Solving Files, it’s a more direct adaptation of the 12 cases Millionaires’ Conspiracy while also having new cases and an original story arc as well. The game is already more episodic in nature compared to the Professor’s games, and once again the viewer is given a chance to participate in the mystery and puzzles, preserving some of the interactivity without making the adaptation a slave to it.

One adaptation that I really loved was Valkyria Chronicles. While the anime generally followed the same main story as the game did, instead of trying to cram everything from the game into 26 episodes, it chose to heavily focus on a character that didn't have much of a role in the game and allow him a chance to get developed better. Additionally, since the combat aspects of the game are told through gameplay that can't really be replicated in an anime format, the anime chose to dive deeper into the romance aspects of the story that the game only briefly mentioned.

I agree with your assessment on the P5 Anime. I feel like it was so laser focused on getting through the story that it misses out on what makes Persona interesting. I was especially annoyed that it mentions the confidants and yet doesn't explore them aside from their beginnings. Overall, if you want to experience Persona 5, play Royal. However, I would highly recommend watching the Persona 4 Anime. It does a much better job telling the story and developing the characters and even takes break during the plot to focus on Social Links. Plus, Yu Narukami is much more developed in the anime than Ren was in his. That being said, I disagree with you on Ace Attorney being a poor adaptation. I watched it from beginning to end and I think it tackles each of the cases from the trilogy fairly accurately, including character dynamics, interactions, and story developments. It even has a few episodes that focus on entirely new content that gives further context into certain relationships and even an entirely original case from scratch. That's just me though, if you weren't a fan, I respect that.

All this talk about the Persona 3, 4, and 5 anime adaptations, yet I've never seen nearly as many people bring up or discuss Devil Survivor 2 The Animation First off: adapting solely the SEQUEL to Devil Survivor - let alone the less likable of the two in terms of plot/character - into an anime? Immediately doesn't sit right with me. But then there's the obstacle of weaving an SRPG with various alternate routes into a linear storyline… I'll leave the rest up to you, there's a bit more to discuss with DeSu2A beyond what I brought up, but in all honesty, I just wanna bring up this video game adaptation for the sake of repping what I believe is one of, if not, the most based JRPG duology out of the entire RPG market, aside from the Digital Devil Saga and Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha duologies on PS2 (yes I am very blatantly shilling DDS, DeSum, and DeSur for you to at least consider playing on the PS2/3 and DS/3DS respectively. TL;DR: Focus on the Phantom Thieves, not the Jokester After playing Persona 5 myself, I actually have an idea that could change the story in its entirety; focus it on the other phantom thieves. It's really that simple. If the entire anime is shown through Joker's perspective, that's basically Persona 5 Lite. But, instead, show how the rest of the cast reacts to everyday life as both a teenager and a phantom thief, they're stories could be much more fleshed out! Semi-spoilers past the 10-hour mark ahead: Take for example, the katana-wielding, semi-isolated art boy Yusuke. We know very little about how he goes through school outside of mentions that it's "too loud" for him at the start, and that he knows Hifumi there. As a member of the phantom thieves, he has the ability to enter the metaverse and do metaverse shenanigans too. So it would be interesting to see him go to Mementos and do art things there or go about his art filled life at his high school, or hell, even SEE his high school outside of a few shots that can easily go over the player's heads if they're not paying attention. Have Hifumi show up and give him a few pointers, like how Yoshizawa does it in Royal. That kind of stuff. And this could be done with all the phantom thieves! Have episodes with Makoto and Akechi (prior to what happens to him in Palace 5), Haru and her business, give me Ryuji being a total mamas boy damnit! That's what I would like to see, anyway. Maybe have one where Makoto also get's the "college exam" drugs from Takemi. That would be funny.

Persona 4 and 3's anime series and movies respectively are genuinely great, as unlike 5, they do alternate from the original game in several aspects. With P4 developing Yu (the protagonist) and being genuinely really funny. As well as adapting shadow fights pretty well for the most part. persona 5 the daybreakers is the perfect example of what this show needed to be. Even without using the all out attack, arguably the best visual aspect you could use in an adaptation, they captured the feel of the combat through a stylized baton pass. The ova gets around the plot by focusing on momentos quests. The only problem with trying to make a show about momentos stuff is you'd have to ignore the main plot to avoid having to explain the larger plot, but i think you could just have a show take place after all the party members have gathered focusing on momentos, confidants, and group hijinx. A complaint about persona is that character development happens outside the plot, but that means for an adaptation you can have the characters develop without it interfering with the plot of the game. This anime also could have been good if it slowed down, focused just on kamoshida and told a stronger narrative with just that. Joker, ann, ryuji, morgana, mishima, shiho, and kamoshida are enough characters to hold a story. If it's not enough, you have momentos, Iwai and Takemi you can use to fill out the arc Then if it was well received, you could do another season on the next palace and more confidants

Good news! P3 and P4 have good anime, though I would definitely recommend watching them after you've played the games. P3A tells the story in their own way but they skip a lot of things, but it definitely adds emotion to the emotional scenes that were missing in the very low-spec games. P4A, especially in the dub, is probably one of the best comedy shows I've ever seen. It's both game accurate and hilarious. They add their own comedic lines and the animation is the sole reason the P4 fandom sees the MC as an absolute chad. Granted, a lot of things are skipped but it's done in a very enjoyable way. One final thing to note, they gave the MC's some of their own personality. P3A having much more of it, while P4A does it in a funny way. Because they skip so much of the story these anime are definitely not meant to be consumed without having played the game, but more of an extension for those who've beaten them.

The best anime versions of games are the ones where its not an adaptation to the game, but instead a side story to it. Yoko Taro who created Nier was broached to do a Nier Automata anime, and in his interveiw, was confused as to why its happening since Anime tends to be long commercials for products like manga and light novels or games's promotion, and the Nier auto game is already released years ago or several months ago on Switch. But he decided if it was going to happen, he knew adapting it straight will never work, since games and tv shows are different mediums, so he opted to instead do a side story, alternate timeline instead, which is what he does also for the short stories he did for the Nier art book releases and the short stories he writes for those and for the concerts. I think more gaming themed animes should do what Yoko Taro did: Make short side stories that can fit in a televised format, or do what if stories that compliment the game.

On the flip side, the persona 5 manga is actually pretty solid. i'd recommend it to both p5 fans who have played the games and those who just really can't play persona games (i get it, the grinding and confidant juggling can be annoying for some people (including me)) and just want to experience the story. Persona 4's anime is honestly great, it gives the protagonist a real personality that i feel like persona games have begun to lack after persona 2 (highly recommend). It reminds me of what the persona 1 manga does, giving the protagonist a real identity. the most interesting thing about joker is xander mobus and his actually great dynamic with robbie daymond (akechi) danganronpa the animation really should be viewed as separate from the game. i actually enjoyed watching it as i feel like the trials are way too long and the emphasis on every single bit of evidence is a chore, especially in the first game. It's honestly nice to see other characters have a bit of agency and actual brains which contrasts with the game where everyone felt kinda stupid because only makoto could solve the case. makoto himself translates far better because he's an actual character whereas joker is far more player stand in. honestly, if you want to play a persona game with an interesting protagonist, i'd recommend the p2 duology. Tatsuya and Maya are really fun characters who get complicated backstories and are have a significant amount of character even with player choice thrown in. probably helps that you get to see them from the outside too. (they also have canon names which is always a plus. nameless protagonists is a trend that i feel like is getting old) one game i think they did well in adaption is the Castlevania series. they didn't take a plot from the game and instead constructed a brand new story that works as a prologue, so the writers had more creative freedom. it has its faults but it feels a lot more solid in its conception.

What's funny to me (granted it was before the game came out) but they did a 30 minute animation called Persona 5: The Day Breakers. Just a random Momentos quest. They could've done those and if they wanted, just do the ending palace since it's in Momentos as well. All the previous palaces could just be referenced and if people wanted to see them, they could play the game or if they wanted to make a second season/ filler for flashbacks, then they can rush the palaces or something.

The dub is probably the reason people watched it in the first place, because of more funny interactions said by the actual voice actors (specifically Xander Mobus) that weren’t said in some areas of the OG game.

>Talking about video game anime >Not mentioning Pokemon But seriously, for as much as people shit on the Pokemon anime, I think it did a really good job at adapting a series of games that had virtually no story whatsoever for like the first 15 years of its existence while also being aimed at kids. Could it have been done better? Sure, but that doesn't mean what we got was bad, especially XY/Z Another good example of an anime adaptation that strays from the game is Tales of Zesteria: The X. Granted, this one kinda had to because everyone hated Zesteria, so it was essentially just fixing the story. And it was done by UFOTable, the same studio responsible for a lot of the Fate stuff and the Genshin anime. Should be interesting to see how that's handled. Speaking of Fate, Steins; Gate is another adaptation of a visual novel and it's widely loved.

Because the main Pokemon anime is merely an advertisement for the games. Where they dropped the ball imho is that they still adapt the games' story, which you can say most of the time they have none but they are more like open-ended rpgs that only works for them but not in an anime. So their way of remedying this apparently is to pad out the pacing and episodes by shoving team rocket in only for them to be defeated for the 1 millionth time. I bet even kids can get tired of this repetitive trope. And it also helps that they change protagonists instead of sticking to just one never aging kid who just goes through the same old process of collecting badges, lose the league, and worst of all, reseting and repeat that process, which makes the long plot tedious to follow through. Yes I heard the news they recently let him won a league and retired him. But that's the problem: "recently". If it took them more than 20 STRAIGHT SEASONS to implement some semblance of story development it's not a good series. But seriously if anyone wants a good Pokemon animation the Twilight wings shorts does the job even though it just covers sword and shield but what's more is that it isn't a adaptation but more of an anthology series that fleshed out and improved the characters of the game. And although a manga, Pokemon adventures as well. It's basically everything what the anime could have been including an engaging plot, great cast of characters that improved upon their game and anime counterparts, and implemented creative liberties like holy sh** the trainers become targets and are part of the battles adding more stakes and tension as opposed to just standing there doing all the commands.

I do highly recommend the P3 and P4 animes, they do an excellent job converting the source material. They also do a really good job giving the protagonists interesting character arcs, especially P3.

I could gas up P4A or the P3 movies since they're pretty good but honestly not enough people talk about how bad Persona 4 Golden the animation was. It's OK if you've already played P4 and don't really think to hard about it but judging as it's own TV series it has zero coherency. Like the first episode tries to speedrun through P4's 3 hour intro but straight up doesn't show the murder mystery aspect of the game and then the second episode comes along and instead of giving the story an actual introduction it just skips to June and has Kanji, who has no introduction or mention in P4GA , just there with no explanation and then the rest of the episode is basically filler comedy. The rest of the show has the issue of introducing members of the main cast out of nowhere and mostly just showing "iconic" moments from P4G with zero buildup to the point where it feels like Best of Compilation or an advertisement for the new stuff they added in Persona 4 Golden I don't have evidence but I'm convinced that the creators wanted you to watch a couple episodes of the regular Persona 4 Anime in between episodes of P4GA so you have context because of how disjointed P4GA by itself.

Persona 4 the animation is the only really good anime to come out of the persona series They just handled it so well and gave the story proper pacing and the characters the time they needed to shine so it works well as a fun anime to watch even if you haven't played the game and a fun anime if you have played the game. I highly recommend it. Though if you want to play p4, I do recommend playing it before watching the anime just cause it's funner to experience the game without having the whole story spoiled already. They made a spinoff anime called Persona 4 Golden the animation later and it's just one of the most unbearable animes I've ever seen. It's just a mishmash jumping to different scenes added in Golden and padding and forcing a new character they introduced into every scene. It's really hard to watch. Lastly there's the Persona 3 anime movies. They're okay, there's some things they did well like their handling of the main character, but the pacing can be kinda wonky at times and the story's just paced a lot better in the game, I'd give the movies a solid 5 out of 10. Overall I'd recommend checking out Persona 4 the animation if you want an example of a Persona anime done right ^^

I agree with your points, but I can't help but feel they're conflicted. Mario Bros, Halo and Uncharted, all terrible adaptations were so criticised BECAUSE they strayed so far from the games. They took characters and settings and seemingly changed everything else. I think Edgerunners is a standout for its original cast and story. But I don't think it's as easy as "tell an original story in an established world" because we've seen that fail many times before.
