By far the simplest and most useful explanation of the FG knot that I've seen. I've been avoiding the FG knot because I've been too intimidated by the other videos that I've seen, but this video leaves me wanting to actually try it!

FG is a must for Shore Jigging.. I don't do shore jigging only spinning and I'm using the Alberto knot. It hasn't fail me yet. My biggest fish is a 6.9kg bluefish caught from it's belly with a popper.. Unbelievable fight for over 12 mins. I thought at first that I caught something much much bigger.. catching a fish from it's belly doubles the weight.. The braid was damaged through the guides from the intense fight but the knot didn't fail. (Braid: SpiderWire Dura X4 0.20mm. Leader: Berkley FluoroShield 0.41mm)

@@JustTheLip Id LOVE to see this knot tested with a fish scale, and get a sense of its break point/slip point vs the general strength of the linage itself. This is neat and makes me what to scale it up in radio tower work when we're lifting and lowering 800 lb hybrid cables; we already do something similar to this, but there's always room for improvement, and your tests would probably scale up for what I'd use it for in most cases. (*side note* with the most earnest respect, at 7:00 all the "Strength" is in that half hitch or whatever the final knot is and not the braids unless the braids slip before the hitch breaks. The braids are treating the larger line as the barrel point so without any significant bites I agree the braids (baskets) are the strongest point, however, the hitch introduces the tightest radius outside the braids coefficient of friction and so assuming the braids don't slip, then the hitch is the weak point on the system. My theory is if you did a break test, it would snap at around 60-65% of the rated strength of the weakest line. To the rest of the people who might read this, the knots provide no additional strength, it is simply a hitch to prevent the braid from slipping, and to keep those braids under tension; the overlapping of the two strands can have a cutting action, but the friction will develop in the cinching hitch at the very end first before those forces can begin to evenly distribute into the FG Knot. I must say though, this shits on a timber hitch. Love this.) ~Cheers.

@TrueHelpTV i have seen a few videos of this k ot compared to others when it really started to take off with the easier ways to tie it this holds around 90-100% knot strenth over multiple tests compared to another popular knot the albright that only has 70-80% the realy only improvment that can be done is less half hitches and a dab of a good soft silicon based super glue that has flex i personaly use a tiny bit of sikaflex just keeps the half hitch from sliping over time

What people don't see is the pile of line and tag ends next to you from all the times you tried to film these knots effectively, keeping everything in frame without stumbling, stuttering, or doing something wrong. It's a lot easier when not trying to film it. I make knot tutorials too - mad respect, and you're doing a great job - keep it up!

Hey thank you, you’re absolutely correct! The rest of the work area is a mess, and the amount of time it takes to film a successful take when doing this is definitely not small haha. My favorite knot but not to tie…your leader appears to be 15 - 20 pound test which would make this method possible. I typically use a 10 lbs test leader but I like your method better than using a Knot-Assist 2.0. Thanks
@chrispac6264

There is a better way to make the transition from your mainline onto the leader, a lot smoother using something akin to a snell knot on the mainline in front of the leader tag. I cast and retrieve my FG knot through the runners, there is a problem; once those 3x half hitches get abraded, and that bit slightly longer tag will catch and that especially the top eye causes wear on the half hitches, then the FG comes undone. Before I learned this trick, I used to have to retie the FG knot every session or even more often as it was getting worn and sometimes even failed in the middle of a long session. In summary, FG knot 2X half hitches snell knot up the mainline When tying the snell you actually run half the snell over the tag end and then a little bit up the mainline and then come back up to the tag but not over it, then head back up the mainline. About 18 rounds is Plenty. It really doesn’t add much time to tie and makes the not rock solid and smooth to retrieve. so when you’re retrieving line what the rod tip encounters in order is single thicknesssnell Double thickness snell Tag/Single thickness again snell over the tag 2x half hitches then the FG And that last forever and is smooth as silk through the top eye and runners

I've been avoiding this knot until I saw a salt strong video with the pinky wrap method. That way is pretty good and all, but this way looks like the holy grail. You can tie it this way in the dark, by feel, and without any tension on the mainline from the rod - perfect!

I’ve tied this knot a thousand times. I found the magic number of wraps to be 18 minimum. And 3 hitch knots to finish it. Burn the leader material tag end after trimming it to create a little knob. Sometimes I dab a little superglue on the braid tag end to prevent fraying.

I've watched no less than 15 fg knot tutorials, but I will say... this is a lot easier to be done when using super heavy leader line such as what's shown in this video and all other videos ive seen. It's much harder to do this on leader line that is much thinner like 6-10 pound flouro. Having leader line that isn't as rigid as what's used in this video makes this almost impossible for the leader to not twist. I'd like to see this same video with small leader. Despite this, the video was very well done and one of the best I've seen.

Best way to tie an FG knot I’ve seen yet. Super simple with the triangle method. Smart. Good vid. 👍🏻 (edit: I do like a Rizzuto finish on all braid-to-leader knots though because it builds a small cone kind of ramp that makes the wear on the main line braid side of the knot pass through the guides much smoother.)

Great video. As with many others here I have been avoiding this knot because of the apparent complexity and the doubts that I could or would tie it while fishing. This video greatly simplifies the knot for me. Two questions. Why not finish the knot with a single uni with 6 or 7 wraps? What about a dab of head cement or or Loon UV thin fly finish? Or both?
@JustTheLip
@JustTheLip 9 ай бұрын
Thank you, and I’m glad it helped simplify things! To answer your questions, first, I don’t know of a reason a uni knot wouldn’t work to finish it. I would give it a shot to test it out and see how it goes. Second, you absolutely can use a dab of super glue on the finish of this knot (it’s actually pretty common!), and it will secure the knot even further. Hope this helps! 🤙

Ultimately, it has been my experience that the size of the lines will be what determines how you do the locking knot. I became a fan of this knot a few years back and lock mine with 2 single half hitches and never had a failure. My failures are usually the leader line itself. Which has typically been a result of just not feel checking the line for nicks often enough. If your fishing bodies of water with zebra muscles. Check your line often, cause they will nick up your line something fierce. I really like your method of making the knot in this video. I tend to use a really long leader so I don't have to retie as often simple because the technique I learned is very cumbersome and hard to tie confidently while on the water. I feel like I could actually use this method while on the water and keep the same level of confidence in the knot. Kudos to the person who taught you this method and good job your video. Your angle, lighting, and background made it very easy to see the knot being tied.

And just ad I speculated, you are definitely right on the knot about the strength on this knot, I now just tie 1 half hitch around both leader and main, then snip the leader tag, then 1 or 2 half hitch on the main, ever since then. That's when I realized how tought this knot is. I've snag on a rock once, and anchored a 14ft fiberglass boat. 50lb jbraid to 25lb mono. And that shit held up incredible well. Thank you!

I tell them it’s the FG knot 🪢 a lot of people ask me about it, though, even on the lakes. i’m gonna try your technique on my 2 pound set ups braid to fluorocarbon. definitely keeping this technique for my 2 pound set ups. Thank you for sharing it on KZbin.

Yeah, it is definitely more difficult with smaller leader material. For those situations I like to use the double uni knot!

You don't want to use this knot on 8lb and smaller. Use a surgeon or double uni for light line

I have never seen this knot before, and I am definitely going to try it. I do a lot of carp fishing and I use braid main line with a monofilament shock leader on the front to avoid abrasion and cutting my fingers while casting The knot I've been using is big and bulky and has a tendency to tick through the line guides. This looks like it's going to be a lot slicker and increase my casting distance. Thank you very, very much for this wonderful tutorial.

This knot is a serious case of overkill for fresh water fishing. It was designed for tying really heavy leaders to really heavy main line for blue water fishing. There is no reason a bass fisherman will ever need a knot this complicated.
@JustTheLip
@JustTheLip Жыл бұрын
Although it is great for heavier leaders, it is also very useful for smaller leaders in situations where you want to cast the knot through your eyelets as smoothly as possible! Also, smaller line can sometimes “bite” into the leader better than larger line, so it is definitely used in lighter-line circumstances as well! That being said, I take your point, and personally I use the double uni knot for joining lines under about 20-30lbs. Thank you for commenting!

Agree 100% about where it came from, what its meant for and way over kill for anything swimming in fresh water short of a wells catfish! - there are easier ways to tie when using smaller lines leaders though too. I use it for everything, this and a PR not just because I build my own rods and build them not with micro guides but smaller guides and FG, PR are as small and smooth as it gets.

Exactly. The reason i prefer this knot over what I used to tie(Alberto knot) is it's smooth casting more so than it's strength. But even when I've had to break off a snag it never breaks at the knot and always breaks near the lure. Heck I've even just tied on another lure to the same leader and been totally fine just proving why a couple extra minutes tying this knot is worth it in my opinion.

Speak for yourself….i use this knot a lot when using deep diving crankbaits from 30# braid to 10# fluoro to get the maximum depth possible. And you need that “overkill” when bouncing it off the bottom, rocks and getting unsnagged.

Tuna fisherman here. Try setting up the Rizutto finish first, tighten that down, and that will act as a dam for the FG knot to butt against while it cinches onto the leader. You'll know the braid bites into the line when it changes color (it should darken). If the braid doesn't change color, the knot will fail. Creating that dam will help the finished end of that knot stay where it should be and get a full bit into the leader (if you just do the half hitch, it doesn't quite get the full bite, like your not @6:30). Lastly, melt the leader tag nub with a lighter to create a small bulb that will never slip through the knot.

Thanks for the tips! I’ve heard a lot of people comment about burning and/or gluing the knot. Definitely seems more common with folks like you who are targeting massive tuna! Definitely something to consider and try, thank you very much for the feedback!

I've used this knot exclusively for several years for braid/mono connections. This is a great demonstration. I did it this way until I saw Ott DeFoe's video using the looped line tensioned by the rod and tied to the reel handle. It's a great method that is easier for me. I agree on the 3x3 half hitches being enough but I also like to tie three more after I clip the mono so that there isn't a sharp edge on top of the knot to catch on anything when reeling it in. When you're tying this if you realize it's not smooth and there's a loop or hitch somewhere in the knot then you've done something wrong and need to start over.

I use the FG…I use 14 loops so 7 full wraps, secure with 2 half hitches, wet and cinch, cut leader tag flush, then 2 final half hitches with braid tag end, cut to about 1/8 inch …I’ve haven’t had knot failures with this method…super thin small knot that goes through guides nicely…mainly freshwater bass fishing…if doing saltwater may use more wraps consider finishing knots…haven’t had good luck with the hand method you demonstrated…I still hold tension with my mouth…good video

Just started taking fishing somewhat seriously. I tried this in the field on a pier at night. BOY WHAT A MESS I HAD! It was dark and a bit windy. Plus my eye sight isn’t what it used to be. Took about 15 minutes plus a lot of colorful language, lol. However it is an easy knot. Like anything, practice makes better and now it’s become quite easy. Thanks for a great video with simple explanations. Now I just need to catch fish.

I have tied this knot for 7 years. My way sucks in a 20 knot wind and waves. I will try your way. I have never had mine fail. Only one half hitch, trim leader to about 1/16”, melt tag end with windproof torch lighter to create mushroom end on leader, then finish with 10 half hitches.done. If you want it more secure, superglue the half hitches and first half of fg.. Tip…superglue will smooth out the transition from 10lb braid to 50lb leader. I use this knot in all sizes of braid up to 100lb and all sizes of leaders up to 150lb. All my tarpon and trolling setups get superglued! They don’t fail, ever!

I appreciate that you didn't speed through the half-hitch parts of this knot. I've watched several videos where they focus on the wraps and then the half-hitches are an afterthought - for example, in other videos I didn't see that the first ~3 half-hitches go over both the leader and the braid. Thank you for going through every detail.

I have never had that knot unravel, amazing. I've even just used one half hitch at the end and it's held. There's been some where due to my sloppiness the braid unravels a little but it never unraveled. I like this method because I usually use the rod as tension and that's hard sometimes on a Kayak. Great video!

I tie this knot exactly like you’ve demonstrated here. I use 16 loops +-. My finish is different but I’ve never had any issues with it ever. I tie 3 half hitches over both lines like you did, then I tie a risotto and I’m done after trimming my lines away. I’ve never had any problem with my knots coming loose nor failing after use through the guides.
