Couple of things you guys misunderstood -the guy pretending to be batman at the start, was part of a unit of cops pretending to be batman to try helping - the coin harvey gave rachel was a coin with heads on both sides, so everytime he was flipping for something, he knew it would be heads, when rachel died, one side became tails so it became real coin flips - bruce was trying to save rachel, but joker told him the opposite places, so if he went for harvey, he would have saved rachel, basically whichever choice batman wanted to make, it would end up being the opposite. Joker always wins. (Edit: just got to the part where ash explains it) This movie is in my top 3 of all time, so glad i watched this in the cinemas as a kid

@Can_O_Crayola10 ай бұрын
@@fynnthefox9078 It's the best we're probably going to get. Two-Face, when you actually step back and look at him, is a goofy-ass character with some pretty outdated perspectives on mental health and split-personality disorder. Eckhart's portrayal is a much better way to do it. He still embodies the "Apollo, the golden boy" fallen savior of Gotham role, and still maintains his obsessions with chance and his coin without bringing in offensive mental health takes. Dude was already a little unhinged from the beginning, and finally snapped from the stress into becoming homicidal.
@passionsquietrage10 ай бұрын
Agreed. The only thing I wish had been done differently was how Dent became Two-Face, they had the perfect opportunity to do it in the courtroom scene and didn't do it. I realize the way it happened was part of the story, but still.
@Metal-Spark Жыл бұрын
46:54 - just a quick note for you and Hannah since it seems like you both missed this: Dent's coin was double sided, it had two Heads rather than a Heads and a Tails. So when he says "I make my own luck" he really meant it. He wasn't ever going to kill that man earlier in the film because the coin can never be a Tails. It's only after he becomes Two-Face that the coin has any real risk. It's still a double sided coin in this bar scene, but now while there are still two Heads (or two faces) one of them is burnt and the other is clean. If it lands on the burnt side, he kills.

Harvey's coin was heads on both sides. Once you know that, if you go back and listen to every time he flipped the coin, he always said "Heads" would be a good outcome, and "Tails" would be a bad outcome...even when Batman stopped him...because Harvey knew that "Tails" was never going to happen with a double-headed coin. That all changed once he became Two-Face. The dark/burnt head meant he was going to do something bad.

He wanted to make the Batman break his rules and he wanted to show the world that people are just animals and that we're all one small step away from becoming crazy by breaking the White Knight - the most "outstanding" citizen out of all of them. By killing Rachel, who they both loved, he could get both of them to break at the same time. All of the other stuff was just distractions for the message he wanted people to know; that we all have the capacity of becoming someone like him.

comparing The Dark Knight, Joker and The Batman is apples to oranges to pears lol. they're all phenomenal but for very different reasons.

I feel that Bale’s Batman is more of the enforcer protector one while Pattinson’s was more of the detective Batman.
@n0nsticknick Жыл бұрын
@@talljohnsparky I feel like Bale and Affleck are the only Batmen we've seen (in live action) that truly embody how great of a strategist Bruce is. And after having both of those performances back to back it was super refreshing to see Pattinson's Batman come along and lean more into his skill as a detective.

46:12 Reason why he didn't kill the Joker was because even if he did try to shoot him, it wouldn't have worked. If y'all play back that scene again and look closely at Joker's hands, you can see that while Harvey has him at gun point, his finger was on the hammer pin of the pistol. So even if Harvey pulled the trigger, the hammer wouldn't strike and therefore it wouldn't shoot. So essentially, the Joker is giving Harvey the "illusion of choice", making him think that he has complete control over the situation when in reality the Joker was in control the entire time. It's such a fine and subtle detail but it really brings more depth to the scene as well as Joker's character. This movie is such a masterpiece.

Jokers multiple stories around his scars keeps the mystique. Kind of makes his story have darker depths. Also, that chase scene never fails to give me goosebumps. The silence as the truck flips over, Joker stumbling along whilst firing the gun, the tension build as Batman fights against the part of himself that wants to kill the Joker. Timeless. Harvey Dent's decline into what he became is also a little nod to the author Alexander Solzhenitsyn (although probs not intentional) - “The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either -- but right through every human heart -- and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained”. Viktor Frankl also had this experience with his time in the concentration camps where he noted good deeds from some of the guards.

Hannah (for once) actually missed a crucial detail when she says Harvey always had it in him to kill. Prior to the explosion his coin was double-headed so he was in control of his actions

This is not to say that Harvey didn’t have an aggressive edge to him as he clearly did, but the Joker manipulated this into lethal force

Christian Bale's Batman voice was actually not as gruff when he was performing his role, it was edited in post-production to make it sound like this! Another very interesting film starring Heath is Brothers Grimm, I'd recommend watching that at some point!

It’s so amazing to watch people that never read the back story in the comics react to the movies. The old heads knew Harvey would turn into Two Face. They knew about the coin and how he turned into a character that was torn in two pieces. It’s just such a shame they killed him off so quickly, and even more of a shame that Heath passed away. They had to change all of their plans for the trilogy. I wonder what would have happened if he was still with us. RIP Heath.

I actually prefer Batman Begins as a Batman movie but still really enjoy Dark Knight as a film. I personally just never cared for how Nolan tried to "ground" Batman in this film and Dark Knight Rises. Gotham was turned into basically Chicago lacking any personality and Batman himself visually was striped from some of his look for example making the Bat symbol less visible and making the suit much slimmer. To me you can ground a character, of course that's fine but that doesn't equal removing personality and visual design just makes it boring and dull. Also hated Bales Batman voice, worse part of these films and I just can't see Bale as a good Batman. Amazing Bruce Wayne though but I never understood people's love of him as Batman. This is where The Batman shined for me it's tone, depiction of Gotham City, much better than what we got in Nolan's later Batman films. Even the TV show Gotham had a much better depiction of the city, even featured blimps so I hope that's something we get in Gunn's new DCU Gotham City. And Robert was just a better Batman, Bale the better Bruce Wayne but that could change in the future once we actually see Robert as Bruce Wayne more.

Love the reactions. This is a masterpiece. I wish Heath was alive to receive his academy award. If you listen to "Batman" as he leaves the police station he tells Gordon he is going after Rachel so he fully believes he is going to save her. Jack Nicholson actually warned Heath about taking on the mental aspect of the Joker while he was filming. Much love and keep on J.

48:45 There is a comic series where Joker reforms and goes back to being Jack Napier by means of a drug that suppresses the joker toxin and becomes a genuine "White knight"...but he ended up reverting in the end (Because of his addiction to the drug)...as it seems with all comic continuity...

God, this is such a good movie. I love how they made both the Joker and Twoface actually scary. I mean PROPER scary. Especially this Joker - you don't want to hang around a person like this, because they might turn against you at any time for no reason. This version is a true power of chaos. And both Joker and Twoface are played by actors who really, REALLY can carry the weight of their characters. They're believable in this movie. It's always a two sided sword if someone modernizes an old story - it can work or it can fail. Here it's done right. PS: And I still LOVE the 1960's Batman with his silly depiction of all the characters, based on the tone the comics had back then. Actually - I dare say that you two should do yourself the favour and watch the movie made for that series - with Adam West as Batman. It is - in a completely different way - as awesome as this movie!
