Fun Fact: The scene when Alan Rickman gets dropped out of the window, they had him up above an air bag and they said "we'll count to three and drop you", but they dropped him on "2" so that look of surprise on his face is genuine. Also, prior to "Die Hard", Bruce Willis was best-known for a TV show called "Moonlighting" where he played a private detective with Cybill Shephard and the same kind hard-boiled snark he displayed in the this movie. Die Hard really made his career.

But as a kid I remember him being an action star was a joke since he was so goofy on Moonlighting. No one could see him in an action movie. I have always thought it was because of the dialog and the plot and that they didi not have CGI back then. Yippee-ki-yay is a cowboy exclamation along the lines of something like “woohoo!” and also used as nonsense noises when herding cattle just to get them moving along. So in this movie they refer back to its usage by Roy Rogers who was a famous TV cowboy from back in the black and white TV era. Hans calls John McClane a Cowboy and John responds that he was partial to Roy Rogers as a kid and then later uses the “yippee ki yay” with MF tagged on the end. References that use the phrase with the swearing at the end are referring to this movie. Without it they may be referring back to the original cowboy origins.
@Novaximus2 жыл бұрын
It's the little things that seperate a generation. My Boomer father grew up watching tv westerners. There's just no way as an American growing up you've never heard or seen a scene on TV of a cowboy adventurer shouting for his horse. "HI HO SILVER" or "Yip Yip!" or the ever classic "Yeeeee Haw!!!!" CLASSIC western expressions. I guess Bruce got it in his head that if you're gonna keep calling me a cowboy I'm going take the liberty of sarcastically playing the part during a perfect time to squeeze in a dry joke after the heightened adrenaline of killing someone. Like in Austin Powers when he wouldn't stop making one liner's after they killed the henchmen in the shark tank. It's just gotta be done.

Looking around a bit. 1936 movie Rhythm on the Range starring Bing Crosby. Bing sings a song called "I'm an old cowhand (from the Rio Grande)", written by Johnny Mercer. But since McClane likes Roy Rogers and he sang that song too that is probably what that character is referencing. That's some old stuff. With reruns I've seen some black and white shows before but don't think anything that old like Roy Rogers.

29:02 Hans is cool, calm, and collected during all the violence and all the adversity from McClane. He only loses his shit when someone challenges his intellect and downplays how good he is at what he does. It wasn't that he was being subservient, it was just that his massive ego reflexively cared more about how *_fast_* he got in Holly's face over how it looked in getting there. I love that character moment 🔥 No, it's not a typical "villain" thing to do, but it says a lot about his motivations and flaws, making him more interesting and well-developed.

This was Alan Rickman's first ever movie role. He was 40 years old here. He'd only done theatre beforehand and I believe he was briefly on a short British tv show when he was slightly younger. But this was his first real role and breakout role and the rest is history. Truly a very gifted actor. Please watch more of his films. All his movies are fantastic. Side Note: Alan nailed this role. I wish they had Alan talk in a much thicker German accent and speak Deutch a little more especially since later you see him switch into an American accent when confronting John. He should have leaned more southern there to make it more convincing since Alan has such very distinctive voice.

In the States, many say "Merry Christmas to you and yours" rather than to mention family specifically. 1. As Hanna suggests, some people do not have families or there is drama with them at the time. 2. It can be perceived as a bit TOO personal to mention someone's family unless you really/actually know that person well. "To you and yours" can mean family, friends, people who are important to you and is far less intrusive.

31:57 Ash, speaking as a tan guy who’s been married to a redhead for 24 years … you always need to apologize. Even if you save her, even if you save the world, she still needs to hear the apology. Just trust me on this one.

Funny Story about Alexander Godunov (Karl): my dad accidentally met him and Jacqueline Bisset in a restaurant in Chicago when my dad was piss drunk with his sister. He didn't recognize either of them, sat himself down, bumbed a cigarette off Godunov, looked at Jacqueline and said "you look just like Jacqueline Bisset" Alexander replied "because that's who that is". My dad, mocking his accent, repeated the reply before it clicked and said "wait...if you're Jacqueline, then that would make you Alexand...😳...oh, excuse us." He proceeded to pick up my aunt off the floor and make a hasty exit. 🤣🤣🤣

Bruce Willis was just a comedian up until this amazing film... I remember seeing this in the theater as a teenager and it blowing my mind!

As Ash pointed out, John McClane is an average guy that appeals to everyone. As Hannah mentioned, John McClane is very lucky. Luck is an essential part of the Die Hard Franchise. As in luck is always on his side. It almost feels as if Luck is its own character and it's protecting John. I've always liked that aspect of the Die Hard formula as it's very subtle but yet everyone seems to notice but never over analyze.

Like Ash said he would try but probably die. McClane has to the luck to make it happen. Even if he is the everyman his luck grows both ways each movie. Bad to be in that situation again, but good enough to be just the guy needed to save the day, where most others would probably fail.

6:34 younger people watching this film always give her a hard time about switching her name to her maiden name. I don't think younger people understand how different the 80s was regarding women's working rights. Her character even mentions why in the film but most younger people wouldn't pick up on it. The 80s was when there was still strong prejudices against women seeking high level positions in executive roles. And stigma attached to being a divorced woman and/or single mother. Enough to effect employment chances. And on top of that her character is working for a Japanese Company. Japanese companies can still be very conservative even these days! In the 80s Japan was a major world tech country/producer and a lot of our electronics, white goods and cars were being made in Japan. Getting a job with a Japanese company in the 80s had great potential. Her character had very good reasons to keep her marital status under wraps considering the historical context. But they make up at the end of the film ❤️

Die Hard is definitely a Christmas movie. In my house I always tell my kids that it's not Christmas until Hans Gruber goes out the window. My wife does really hate for making her watch it every Christmas Eve. She always begs the kids to a different movie. I laugh and smile when they say "No mom we want to watch Die Hard". My wife and kids are the best and I really love them completely.

"Baby Snape" - I love it^^. But yeah, he looks really, really fantastic in this movie! His first major role after only doing a couple of movies ever, and then it becomes such an iconic one.

One symbolism you didn’t know that was at the end of the movie. Officer Powell was in the tv show called Family Matters and his name was Carl Winslow. He was only known by that character name. So it only makes sense that he get to kill that character off.

Agree with Ash. Said it since I saw this in the theaters while in high school. Alan Rickman's character was insanely good. Great thing about 80s action movies was the scripting. They didn't take themselves too seriously, and they didn't add their social/political beliefs into the film. Everybody could enjoy them for what they were.

BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIE EVER!! Before Bruce Willis was cast as John McClane, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner, James Caan, Michael Douglas, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, William Hurt, Mickey Rourke, Mel Gibson, Richard Gere, Charlie Sheen, Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman, Warren Beatty, Ryan O'Neal, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Nick Nolte, Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Jeff Bridges and Charles Bronson were considered for the role. For the cop Al Powell, Laurence Fishburne, Denzal Washington, Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, and Wesley Snipes were considered. The movie is based on the novel 1979, Nothing Lasts Forever, which was the sequel to The Detective which starred Frank Sinatra. In the novel, he's named Joe Leland rather than John McClane. The novel's ending was a lot darker than the movie itself: SPOILERS! McClane shoots Gruber in the chest, but not before he grabs Holly by her sweater where they fall out the window to their deaths. Karl does survive and starts to shoot at police and reporters with an M-60 Machine Gun. Powell kills Karl with an M-16 rifle where a stray bullet from Karl's gun hits McClane in the leg, where he is put in an ambulance but dies of his injury.
