If you look at it from an interesting perspective, one person‘s crochet, shorthand, is nowhere near the same as the other. Trying to decipher the shorthand, becomes the real challenge. You’re amazing for doing this, definitely a challenge. Keep up the work.

I think you are amazing! The patterns are written in a crazy code sometimes. Can you imagine a crocheter 90 years ago writing this pattern down thinking, 'Some day a wonderful woman will see my pattern in this book and know exactly what is in my mind'. Let's face it, it was a very different time in 1933. A lot of these patterns IMO were word of mouth handed down from family to family. It's amazing that they were written down at all. However coded they may be. YOU DID GREAT!!❤❤

Yes, I think that there may be very likely family, regional or tradions because of origin be involved in the wording and explantions used. I always thought it is sad, that we are probably not able any more to trace these traditionel ore even individuel remnants of past living.

Never a fail at anything. We are all learning with you. These are cryptograms. My Grandma would write like these. If you think about how amazing women knew exactly what they were doing. We write patterns very differently. I love your videos.

I think you did a great job, even if it wasn't what was originally intended. I'll tell ya, I've been crocheting for almost 40 years now, and not once have I come across "dv" in a pattern. I quickly searched the internet for help, and the best I came up with was a dc V-stitch (I'm guessing dc, ch1, dc all in the same st or sp). I didn't see anything like that in the photo, so I'm going to do this in worsted weight with a comfy hook, and see if I can't make it work. If nothing else, I'll have one more thing to drape on the couch.

Valiant effort! In hindsight, it looks like when the pattern said "in 3rd," it didn't mean in the third stitch over, but in the end stitch of the ch5 plus 2dc cluster. But that's hindsight...

You did great. Very difficult pattern without photo context. I have never seen a crochet project in that shape before: not round, not square, more diamond shape. My grandmother was a prolific crocheter and I think she would have had problems with that pattern.

We can get them all correct. It’s not that you failed… the pattern written failed you. It’s a game. If you had had the picture while working it, you would have been able to see it. Sometimes te rules of the game fail us. 😂❤

Corrina, on the positive side, it looks like you created an intricate dandelion to me 😊. You just tweak it a but at the point where you noticed the difference,to make it circular, or the hieght adjustment, and there is a beautiful dandelion doily. Imo, I like it. A few color changes and a beautiful flower ✌️🫶✌️

This is the same kind of thing my great aunt Maude used to make! Even though the swirls don't swirl, you did good! feel like if you had started with the photo, you would have corrected yourself early and done it right! I would have given up long before then! You are a blessing, Corinna!

This is definitely one of those patterns where you have to know what your finished product is supposed to be before you attempt it. If you had the picture from the beginning, you would have gotten it, but the fun of this series is that you can fail a pattern. It's fine. It happens. It wouldn't be interesting if you got every pattern right on the first try. Plus, doilies can be really complicated and intricate and I've definitely messed quite a bit of them up, even the modern patterns with plenty of pictures and clear instructions. Crochet is just like that sometimes, lol. It's not as linear and straightforward as knitting.

Hello Corrina, I think this doily turned out pretty good, considering the written instructions were kind of messed up. To no fault of your own, I think you did remarkable job in trying to make sense of it all. And even tho you consider this doily a fail. I think it turned out okay considering. It was a a hard pattern to work. Go back and do the clusters over and it will work out. Cluster stitches always are gathered at the top by one stitch. Love watching you figure out these old patterns. I personally love making doilies and have made the same mistake with cluster stitches.

Beautiful! NOT A FAIL! Water and sugar dissolved (sugar starch). Take the sugar water and spray the doily. Then iron it ( makes them display and hardens the fibers to stay in place for a long time, til' washing was needed) . Some could lay out flat and fidget with it to spread out and let dry in place (depending on the degree of spreading out you needed to do. Ironing was usually involved with the more delicate and large looping doily) . NOT A FAIL! Sugar starch and an iron will flatten out and create a spread open effect. My best friend, Hattie, was born in 1902 (she passed at 95yrs on Easter Sunday many years ago). I learned that was how she and her sisters would learn to iron. Mom and grandmother would crochet beautiful doilies to place on the lamp table, dining table, floor radio cabinet et cetra to protect the wood from scratches made by lamps, clocks, vases that adorned the furniture or mantle. Doilies are so pretty and I am glad you are showing people this old art!

The picture is nice too, but not as nice to me. Too bad there was an error that caused curling because I would have been super proud of this one that you made. 1933...my mom was 2 years old, the youngest of 8 children. The family was struggling to make a living on a farm in Sherman County Kansas. Yes, dust bowl. Depression. And my gramma would have been making doilies as a way to de-stress and keep her sanity. This pattern might have thrown her except that she would have had the picture. I have a collection of her doilies and they're all gorgeous. When I was 17 she gave me her steel hooks, all tiny and some bent slightly backwards from use. Love your channel. P.S. I was born in 1955.

Sometimes you just need a picture !! I taught myself to read patterns and it took a magnifying glass and a picture to accomplish that especially since I’m left-handed and at the time there was only right-handed directions ( wayyyyyyy long ago!!😜) . Your doily still turned out nice. ❤️❤️

I am feeling your anxiety watching this more than usual. I am tring your mystery challenge from last video. It is not going well. It is one step forward, two steps back. I hope other people are having better luck, but I think that I just started crocheting within this year, I think part of it is my lack of experience. I think I figured out where the pattern went wrong!!!!! (I'm just excited and thought you/others might be interested in the info) I thought this was a neat pattern so I decided to give it a shot. I got it to work out by doing the following: In row 8, I tried interpreting the 'tr in nxt dtr' as skipping 5ch (up the stem doodad). Then, I came to the conclusion that the 'sk/skip 10 sc, 5 sc' was supposed to be along the groups of 3 sc between the 'points.' That would mean that the pattern is missing a sc in the top of the point and the 5ch, dtr, 5ch, tr in 6th st in reverse on the other side. Love your channel and the mystery series in particular! Also, it's your channel you do what you want :3

It was pretty anyway, the way you did it. I would have chucked it across the room a few times in frustration. Lol. Now that there are all these tutorials on KZbin, I can enjoy knitting and crocheting again because I can follow along exactly to see what I'm supposed to be doing. Printed patterns sometimes were overcomplicated or had errors and so I ended up not finishing things. It's really fun to see how you try to follow and decipher the odd patterns of the past. They made a lot of beautiful things, but I think it didn't always translate well onto paper. It is definitely helpful if you can see a picture of what it's supposed to look like. Thanks for doing this. I learn, I'm entertained, and I get to see pretty things from yesteryear. Win win win!

I'm sure someone already or you already figured out a cluster is: 2 double cluster= make one dc leave last loop on hook, make second dc leave last loop on hook. 2 loops now on hook yarn over pull through all 3 loops. Hope this helps
