Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) is trying to prevent his house from being bulldozed when his friend Ford Prefect (Mos Def) whisks him into outer space. It turns out Ford is an alien who has just saved Arthur from Earth's total annihilation. Ford introduces Arthur to his myriad friends, including many-headed President Zaphod Beeblebrox (Sam Rockwell) and sexy refugee Trillian (Zooey Deschanel). Arthur makes his way across the stars while seeking the meaning of life, or something close to it.

Note: "Resistance is Useless" predates the appearance of the Borg by at least a decade. "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" was conceived of in 1971 and first published in 1979. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was first broadcast in 1987. The Borg first appeared on ST:TNG in 1989. I had a booth at a renaissance faire where I was living for the six-week run of the event. Between weekends, it was like a camping community. People had access to a camper at the edge of the property where there was a working kitchen, to cook meals. I found a copy of this book, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". I'd heard of it, even seen much of the BBC mini series based on it. So I began to read it... I could not put it down. Seriously, I read straight through it, so entertained was I. Took a couple of days to do this, during which I didn't get much sleep. Loved it! Later read "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe". Another great read. I urge you to take the time and read at least the first book.

The original BBC radio program and the subsequent book both predate Star Trek TNG by almost a decade. "Resistance is useless" is a happy coincidence, not a reference.

I hate to be the "The Book is Waaaay Better" guy, but in this case it really is true. That said, this movie is wonderfully fun if you're already a fan of the books-- there are a LOT of call-backs and references to pick up. Just off the top of my head: - The original Marvin from the BBC TV show appears in the Vogon office queue standing in line - One of the planets in the Magrathean Factory Floor is a 3D rendering of the late Douglas Adams (the original creator and author of the series-- he's also the face the flashes before the end credits - The beautiful crabs that keep getting smashed are a reference to an extended section in the books about how the Vogons and these crabs evolved on the same planet together, but the only thing the Vogons figured out to do with the crabs was to smash them. They didn't have any other use for them, and they were of poor nutritional value. They just loved smashing them. One other thing I like to point out is that it is completely within the nature of this franchise for this version of the story to differ wildly from all the others. No versions of this franchise line up with each other properly-- The books are one story, the radio play is another, the TV show is a condensed and rearranged version of the other two... Totally on-brand and as tongue-in-cheek as Douglas would have wanted.

To be fair to the movie version, there was a lot of content in those books, and I think the movie did a good job of hitting the important points and creating a shorter narrative. But yes, the books are way better, as is the BBC miniseries.

Betelgeuse is a supermassive star about 700 light years from Earth. It's visible from the ground with the naked eye as part of Orion's Belt. It is a planet orbiting that star that Ford is supposed to be from though a specific one is never named. Douglas Adams is the goat btw. 42.

Ford's name, 'Ford Prefect' is the name of a type of car common in the UK (manufactured 1938 to 1961). For Americans, it's like naming someone 'Ford Ram'. Notable that Ford thought cars were the dominant lifeform on the planet Earth.

This movie is a lot of fun. There are all sorts of theories on how 42 is the answer for life, the universe and everything. You should read up on some as they are pretty cool ideas. My 42nd birthday was themed this as I was the answer to life, the universe and everything for a whole year. We did a tea party with finger sandwiches, dolphins and whales snacks and mice shaped lady fingers. My cake was Marvin. I love this book and the tv series is pretty funny. This movie has some hilarious moments and some beautiful imagery. Glad you watched it.

There are so many details in this movie that are only explained in the other versions (book, radio, TV series, Infocom text adventure) of the story, making it super fun for fans - the Vogon's gazelle chair, the jeweled crabs, the thing with the towels. The movie differs from the books quite a lot, and I remember that people weren't happy with all the casting choices ("Too many Americans"). But the great thing about the franchise is that *all* of the incarnations are different in ways that are both conflicting and complimentary to each other. As the creator of all of them (including the movie screenplay) Douglas Adams embraced the differences, making it part of the meta that in a satire of an infinite, arbitrary existence, nothing need be consistent.

Glad you did this movie - it's not often reacted to, and although it can't possibly capture the entire magic of the 5-book series, I think it still did a good job of portraying Douglas Adam's comedic and absurdist tone. As a suggestion for something that has a little bit of the whimsical-yet-serious tone, I'd recommend The Grand Budapest Hotel, which is one of my favourite Wes Anderson films.

The practical creature effects used for the Vogans and other species presented in the film are made possible by The Jim Henson Creature Shop. Before they did this film, they and their parent company, The Henson Company, created a TV series called Farscape, which was SyFy (formerly The Sci-Fi Channel and Sci-Fi)'s first original foray into original programming. The show featured a lot of practical creatures, and the Henson Company stated they did the series to show what the Creature Shop could do (and it not just be known for the Muppets). The show ran from 1999 to 2003, and had a mini-series that wrapped up the main storyline in 2004. If you think the practical creatures in this film are impressive, you should definitely check out Farscape. You won't regret it.

The story exists in multiple versions and different formats. First it was a radio series, then it was a book (which had several sequels over the years), then it was a TV series. This film is generally considered to not be the best version by people who are familiar with the others, which would explain the low ratings it gets.

The books are even more bizarre then the movie... A trilogy in 5 parts.. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979) The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (1980) Life, the Universe and Everything (1982) So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish (1984) Mostly Harmless (1992) And Another Thing... (2009 written after Douglas Adams passed away in 2001 using material Douglas wrote prior to this death). Another bizarre series he wrote was "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" the back cover of which reads....: "What do a dead cat, a computer whiz-kid, an Electric Monk who believes the world is pink, quantum mechanics, a Chronologist over 200 years old, Samuel Taylor Coleridge (poet), and pizza have in common?"

The original incarnation of Hitchhiker's was the 12 part BBC radio series, which played in the US on National Public Radio stations when I was in middle school, and I just fell in love with it. I sometimes describe it as "Gulliver's Travels in Space". The movie is okay, and I'm glad they made it, but it doesn't quite do the other incarnations justice.

I suggest to read the books. If you do, the BBC did a radio version of the series which corresponds to all of the novel's except the last book. Listening while reading helps. The guide became Dr Strange in the multiverse. Read the books and you'll understand that reference

I think fans of the book actually like the movie. Of course we'll say the book is better but the movie does a really good job of capturing the spirit of the book which I thought would be impossible to translate to film since a lot of its charm is in the way the book is written. The lower reviews are probably people who didn't really know what they were getting themselves into and walked out of the theater confused which is completely understandable.

There are a lot in this movie just put in to please the fans of the books, but not explained enough for those who haven't read them. The towel thing would probably need 10 minutes more movie to be fully explained, so maybe that's why non readers don't get it. There are a lot of "hidden" fan service too. The crabs and the Vogon furniture that looks like a deer with a broken back are among my favorite. If you haven't read the source you'll have no clue, but for the initiated it brings back memories of funny passages from the book that may be better in written form and gives you a comedic endorphin injection now and then throughout the movie.

Douglas Adams was an active writer/commentator on technological advancements well into my childhood, and would've LOVED to witness the current social internet era, not only with satirical writing inspired by it but actively participating in web and game dev. Ever fascinated by our relationship with technology, His KZbin channel would be transform how we view ourselves (his '98 game Starship Titanic is very much an attempt at an early ChatGPT), making losing him at age 49 all the more tragic, because there's work still for him to do. But in a way, this reaffirms the bleak, cynical existentialism thorough his books: how his own heroes would often die as part of some cosmic joke, while searching for ultimate meaning in a strange and indifferent universe.

It was originally a radio series, two seasons of six episodes starting in 1978. Books followed, but took the story in a different direction. The BBC made a TV version of season 1 in 1981, very faithful to the radio series and the cast re-recorded ep1-6 for a vinyl album release in 1979 by Original Records. The TV version is very close to it. However, it can't be said of the movie made after Adams sudden death in 2001. It contains stuff specifically created for the movie, covers only about episodes 1-4, lots of quotable lines & jokes familiar to fans are missing, entire scenes dropped etc. The ending is badly fudged too - the restaurant Ford mentions is at the end of time, not space. I would encourage you to listen to the original radio broadcasts or the BBC TV version. I've seen the Original Records version on YT, they are all light years ahead of this movie which, for me, was a disappointing mess. It was written first for radio and that's by far, the best and funniest version. BTW, the theme music is an old track by The Eagles, 'Journey of the Sorcerer' from One of These Nights.

Great reaction, just cant help my self to address one thing it's an odd thought to have, "what if a racist could change something about the earth", something tells me "making everyone same skin color as me", wasn't it, since that wouldn't change anything. hope you don't think racist = Genocidal murderer although wouldn't be that surprising after dating an a American woman of relatively recent African decent, Not "African American" no other nation intentionally and unapologetically prefix genetic heritage before nationality to think that serves any purpose is... you know, not evil, but Ignorant... racist how could I possibly understand Americas special history with racism? is a common retort Ironic, since almost all Americans I have met (easily some of my favorite individuals to be around I might ad) have next to no historical knowledge about any other nation in the world... so just a programed response well my girlfriend went to private school, got a collage degree and was pretty intelligent, she said she would point me to some reading material that would help me understand... I though I would be reading books by some of you great civil rights leaders, but no, she sent me link to what I can only describe as a blog post (no references) that was giving a personal opinion on what racism means (like the definition is up for debate) and implied that his skin-color straightened his credibility 🤯 she has no idea why the African, Asian and European continents developed at such a different rate, and WAS AFRAID TO LOOK IT UP! no btw it has nothing to do with skin-color.
