Great video once again brother. I’m running a full flow setup with external oil filter and oil cooler above the transmission on Jawbreaker with her 2054. I would like to add, if you’re running an external oil cooler with the stock dog house cooler, it’s a smart idea to run an oil thermostat so on cooler days you don’t over cool the oil and it can properly get up to temp.
@JWClassicVW

I got the rods back on crank with new bearings, new mains and new cam bearings, case put back together and I will check end play with flywheel and gland nut tightened to at least 250 lbsof torque and let you know Thanks

It would be hard to drain all the oil when doing an oil change. Something to think about when changing oil. Maybe add on a drain on the external cooler.

Hi Jason, great video thanks. Question I noticed that some guys don’t machine the block to fit the oil return fitting into the case but instead use the one oil pressure relief valve cylinder by removing the piston and spring? Does this work?

Hi Jason. I am running a 2180 and find that the oil temps are on the high side around 230 / 240. Oil pressure is 42 running and will drop to 38 when hot. From what I understand, the oil pressure relief (pulley end) has the long spring and holds the plunger / piston in place until the engine starts and oil pressure pushes down to compress the spring and plunger which closes off the port to the cooler and allows oil to flow through the galleries. If you have a oil pump which has more pressure than the standard 20 to 30 psi how do you know what tension spring to run to allow the oil to get to the cooler. I am running an external cooler and my feeling is that the spring tension is not allowing the plunger of overcome the oil pressure to open up enough to allow more oil through the cooler. Any thought would be appreciated.
@JWClassicVW
@JWClassicVW Жыл бұрын
You definitely have something wrong, the standard that I've learned and have used is about 10psi per 1000 rpm. As far as the spring goes I've removed the spring at the pully side as part of my full flow system. I'd hook up a Gauge somewhere to confirm that yours isn't faulty but that spring can also get stuck.
@gregjones981
@gregjones981 Жыл бұрын
@@JWClassicVW Thank you for replying. On some of the articles I have read, it indicates that the spring hold the port closed to the main oil gallery until oil pressure builds up and then diverts it away from the cooler until the oil gets hot and therefore less pressure, so the spring overcomes the oil pressure and diverts the oil to the cooler. If you remove the spring does that allow the oil to go to both the cooler and the gallery at the same time. I think my spring is too weak and staying open and not allowing oil to the cooler.

JW I have a question for you I would be very appreciative. I have a 1957 VW with a 1966/68 cc stroker small block Chevy rods. This engine has been together this way since the mid 70s. I have always had a bit of end play but now it seems excessive, I have been checking and checking to see what the cause may be. It has a AS 41 DP block and 92 pistons and a 73/74 Pauter Machine Stroker Crank. I think my problem may be with the Flywheel, I’m still running a 6 volt flywheel and entire vehicle is 12 volt. LMK what you think and get back to me as soon as you can Thanx😊
@JWClassicVW
@JWClassicVW Жыл бұрын
Endplay comes from bearing or case wear, hopefully just bearing wear. The best thing to do is pull the engine, remove the flywheel, and check the flywheel bearing for play. If that bearing has any movement your going to most likely need a line bore, new bearing. Sorry excessive end play definitely means something is wrong. It could be something as simple as a loose glandnut but investigation is required.
@richardciviello3817
@richardciviello3817 Жыл бұрын
@@JWClassicVW have already split the case checked all bearings and all the bearing cradles all edges are sharp. It did seem after torquing the gland nut in excess of 250 lbs the end play was much less but all the videos I look at they state you really don’t have to torque all the way also when pushing back and forth when checking it seems to hop, I assuming because of slanted cam gear and crank gear LMK what you think people are saying that the 6 volt flywheel might be the cause but if I measure without flywheel still seems excessive Thanx for the comeback and thoughts
@JWClassicVW
@JWClassicVW Жыл бұрын
Not sure about the 6v flywheel and how it has anything to do with your endplay. Yes the flywheel should be torqued. How was the bearing wear and the crank journals? The next step for me would be to re torque the case halfs with the bearing and check my clearance compared to the crank. You need the proper tools for this.
