The reason Major Villeneuve (The French Soldier) was antagonistic toward Benjamin Martin was the last war they'd fought in had been against each other. The French and British were implacable enemies for centuries. But when the Revolution happened the French sent the Americans tons of help. Lots of officers like Villeneuve came over to fight. The most famous being the Marquis De Lafayette. The French ended up being quite instrumental in helping America win, they ended up sending a full army over to help. The British soldier you saw as Wicked and Vile was based on Colonel Banastre Tarleton, who had a very bad reputation, he did things like killing wounded prisoners, and he was known as The Butcher.

Random Fact: Jason Isaacs (the evil British guy) said when they filmed Mel Gibson crying over Heath Ledger he was in the middle of telling a dirty joke so he stopped mid joke, did the heartbreaking & emotional scene, & then came back & finished the joke like it was nothing 🤣

You pointed out that Gabriel and Thomas were both responsible for their own deaths without knowing it. If Thomas waits, he would help save his brother, and if Gabriel had picked up a rifle with a bayonet, he wouldn't have gotten stabbed. Simple inexperience. I loved this reaction. You two are a joy to watch.

I agree, they made mistakes that cost them their life. Although in Gabriel's case I rather think he favoured the knife because he wanted Tavington half alive so he could carve him up in revenge for the massacre at the church, echoing his father's rage at Fort Wilderness. The problem is that he underestimated Tavington, he was cunning and a more seasoned soldier, not to mention that shot in the shoulder was nothing. Gabriel's rage was blinding and so he made a poor assessment of the situation.

The French guy if you rewatch it he says “where does he get the opportunity to kill a few red coats and a few wounded ones when Martin is not looking”. That was his his free opportunity for revenge for killing his family by joining the war.

He did not do worse things in the British guy who was killing the citizens. He did horrible things to the French army who were responsible for killing civilians including kids. None of the people he did those horrible things to were citizens, kids, or women. Every one of the French that he did that too were guilty of horrible war crimes. There's a huge difference.

And the real irony of it is that it would end up costing them the remainder of their North American holdings in the long run. But by the time it happened, the Florida and Louisiana territories were kind of superfluous in the grand scheme to Spain and France. But not to *us*, lol.

The last hold out tribes of the American south west ( Comanches, Apache, Navajo etc.) Learned to keep dogs with their war parties at all times. While on the move almost constantly. The dog worked as a food source that would follow the tribe anywhere. If I remember right they were called Dog Soldiers for this practice.

The workers on the plantation were "not slaves" to make the lead character palatable to the audience. It is likely that at that time if a plantation owner paid his black workers, he would be villified by his neighbors, and put to ruin. They would see it as an attempt to cause their slaves to rise up against them. It would not be allowed, one way, or another. The axe was called a hatchet or tomahawk. I agree with Ryl. Whatever the reason for your revenge, is still with you, after you have avenged. Vengence, when completed leaves you empty. They don't have Fireflies in England, which explains his fascination. From accounts of soldiers of that era we learn that you could see a cannonball coming. It was considered cowardice to duck it.

Martin's background at Fort Wilderness was that he lead a band of fighter's against the French in the French and Indian War. They were men who were guerilla and ambush fighters and used brutal tactics.

The "Colonies" were seen by some officers in the british Army as neighbors, and others as posessions....along with all the people in them. Press Gangs were a common means of drafting men for service in the Royal Navy, and apparently, in recent books I read, occasionally by the Army.

In my interpretation, in the final fight: The tomahawk is Benjamin Martin's past; his awful, monstrous identity. The knife is Gabriel. The bullet is Thomas. The bayonet, was Tavington's dishonorable and cruel self, used to deceive him in the same way he did Gabriel. Symbolically, the final bayonet piece picked from the ground was from hell, sitting in flames and waiting to finally dispatch him.

Like shown in the movie, the British truly had the numbers. But the colonies had the terrain and used their knowledge of the land to their advantage. This is what mostly turned the tide of battle. The allies arriving was just the cherry ontop. Interesting perspectives on Benjamin's past. But what separates him from Tavington is Benjamin is reformed and turns over a new leaf. Tavington is just heartless and relentless.

Karama isn't real... only guilt and bad decisions! I'm a Christian and believe in the lord 💯 Serial killers prove it...guilt may cloud one's judgment and that could be blamed as karma... but in reality it doesn't exist. If it did then free choice wouldn't exist...which is crucial to a Christian

The mayor tried to avoid closing the beach, and the people at the meeting were upset at the possibility of closing the beach down, because they are a summer town. The beach is a tourist attraction, that brings people to the town, driving business and allowing the people of the town to earn a living. He didn't think past the immediate situation of the people not being able to make enough money in the summer to live through the rest of the seasons, to safety and chasing away future business over scandal of safety not being put first

Gabriel probably wanted to carve up the butcher bad guy, like how he heard his father had done with the native americans, cutting off his body parts, skin, and etc... so that is why he was going in with the small knife... wanted to make the bad guy suffer, torture him, and etc... instead of just shooting him dead, gabriel didn't want him to have a quick merciful death... gabriel wanted to slowly chop him up into pieces...

I can’t stand how his neighbor went to the other side and sold them all out and killed them in the church too because he didn’t want to die although he deserved it for selling them out in the first place. He was definitely on the wrong side and he helped to kill people he knew. He was all about his own survival and no one else’s.

My one biggest issue with this movie, despite it clearly being a work of fiction, is that a white land owner's african american workers ARE NOT slaves. Thats just a cute narrative tweak they did to endear the main character and his family to the audience. Historically, those men and women were 100% slaves to that family, and honestly I think portraying them as anything else is a disservice to the history of the war and of the people living in that time. The rest of the movie is fucking fantastic though.

Real stories don't always wrap up nice and neat. And few ever have a happy ending. And you got it wrong. Benjamin wasn't as bad as the British guy. The people he killed and mutilated were French soilders who had butchered men women and children. That's why he and his Men mutilated the French soilders after they tracked them down. And they sent the baskets of eyes, tongues and ears to the Cherokee indians who were the French allies. Knowing how superstitious they were and it worked. The Cherokee broke their treaty with the French afterwards and quit fighting for them. Benjamin had always felt guilty only because they had mutilated those soilders. Partly out of anger for butchering men, women and children civilians. And partly to scare the Cherokee. This British Colonel murdered innocent children, women and men. And had absolutely zero regret for doing so. He and Benjamin were nowhere near the same.
