Unfortunately this tank and Hanwua Heavy Industry didn't won the contract against General Dynamic and Elbit System. They offer Philippines this tank with a 105mm Otomalara turret on a K-21 IFV. Maybe next time if Philippines want a IFV in the mix. Are you gonna do review on ASCOD 2 42tons Medium Main battle Tank or the Philippine Sabrah ASCOD 2 35Tons Light tank?
@echonova31254 жыл бұрын
South Korean DOD restricted K-21’s specifications to be less than 25tons and capable of amphibious assault. This is due to the nature of Korean geology. Having said that I’d say K-21 came out to be a well armed (40mm Cannon is a no joke), and armored with great utility. I have joined a joint training exercise with 2nd corps mech div guys with one of these during my years of service in ROKA 12th mountain division. And the first time I saw K-21s, I was shocked that these things can float.
@firestorm1654 жыл бұрын
Any idea how those pontoons are protected? Personally I'd be worried about a stray bullet puncturing one during a river crossing and end up getting capsized
@echonova31254 жыл бұрын
Tube itself is almost submerged under waterline, making it a hard target to hit, not to mention the top part is protected by the actual side armor skirt of the vehicle. And even if the tube does get punctured, the tube is actually separated into multiple smaller tubes, a few damaged tubes won’t sink the vehicle.
@firestorm1654 жыл бұрын
Cheers, thought it might be something like that but wanted to be sure
@echonova31254 жыл бұрын
During K-21’s prototype testing, there was a terrible accident of the vehicle drowning. This was caused by the overall lightness of the vehicle, having a full load in its passanger compartment (full squad) made the vehicle rear-heavy unballanced, thus sinking the vehicle. To solve this compartmentalization of the tube was done. So when crossing a river with a full load, K-21 will only inflate its front and middle tubes. Later this led to better survivability when punctured too.
@raymorriss73424 жыл бұрын
Pontoons gave me a thought actually, have no idea if it would work. if you had a sliding perforated plate that slid down when the pontoon deployed would it be effective at giving you a stand-off effect vs missile/rpgs?

There is no other IFV today that has this level of protection, firepower, speed, troop capacity and amphibious capability, yet weighs only 25 tons. If I understand it correctly, the vehicle has a largely fiberglass frame with lightweight composite armor attached, which is how all that was packed into such a light vehicle. Add to that its sophisticated fire control, battlefield management and networked communications systems and you have the most advanced IFV in the world today.

K-21 ability to transport infantry is manualy said to be capable of transporting 9 fully armed mechanized infantry, but in reality, it is expected to only transport maximum 8 fully armed mechanized infantry. Because if one or two of the squadrons is armed with a PanzerFaust-level anti-tank weapon, there's not enough space in the vehicle. The KIFV ability to water drive was originally initiated in 1989 by a project of armored vehicles equipped with heavy fire weapon system. South Korea introduced T-80U and BMP-3 in 1995 as a bear project with Russia, and received many hints in BMP-3 water driving ability. As a hint obtained here, the Ministry of National Defense and Agency for Koera Defense Development (KDD) made it a task to give limited water driving capability to a 30t test model and a 25t test model, but failed to use the BMP-3 water jet system for K-21 as well as to use a propeller, but also failed to obtain sufficient water driving capability. Eventually, the prototype was born with a very limited water-driving capability using orbits, just like conventional armored vehicles. It only recorded a speed of 7.8 km/h. Eventually, the current K-21 flotation system with BMP-3 wave-blocking devices is completed. South Korea has developed this system to across small river during military operations, so there is no problem in achieving the military's strategic goals, but it still has a much slower water driving capability than BMP-3. The 40mm main gun is not a BOFORS. This is the call 'Nobong' Korean 40mm gun that licensed 40mm of BOFORS in Korea. Yes, the basic structure is the same as BOFORS, but in many parts it is different. ex) BOFORS twin, Nobong is single. The 40mm main gun is powerful, but it is very difficult to deal with a 2nd generation tank. this 40mm APFSDS shell can defeat all existing armored combat vehicles but 'except tanks'. However, the 40mm K237 APFSDS has 170mm penetration at 500m, 150mm at 1km, and 130mm at 1.5km. So, it's very difficult to deal with Norrth Korean tanks based on the T-62 Line. Of course, T-34, SU-85, SU-100, and T-55 line K-21 can be destroy, but not against 2nd generation tanks like T-62. If 40mm of APFSDS in 300 shots per minute, K-21 could be destroy an orbit or an external control device. that's why K-21 has ATGM system. ATGM system can be destroy all 2nd generation tanks. So a good commander wouldn't order to deal the tanks only with K-21. The main goal of K-21 is to carry heavily armed mechanized infantry, operate with MBT, and destroy infantry carriers, light armored carriers, etc. Yes, if K-21 have a chance, they can attack to transport helicopter, sometime use ATGM can be hunt MBT Thank you for interest in IFV in Korea. K-21 is an IFV with many advantages, but not a tank. It's not even a light tank. It's just an IFV with enhanced firepower. K-21 has the same limits as other IFV. Please keep an eye on how KIFVs will develop based on K-21 in the future. thank you.

I'm super excited to see you do the K-21, it's been one of my favorites for a while. The debate between armor and mobility will probably rage on forever, but if you're going to go the mobility route, the K-21 probably does it perfectly. The question I have is whether the chassis can support thicker side and belly armor in some relatively easy to install kit, so the amphibious capability can be traded for more armor if the mission dictates. If it can, and if such a kit was developed, I think it would be easy to describe the K-21 as generally the best IFV in the world.

The numbers build is interesting. To me it is clear that it is an offensive vehicle build to counterpunch a North Korean attack. Now whether there is 400 or 900 build is interesting, as it points to one or two places for a counterpunch (simultaneously and respectively). Counting 100 IFV per brigade this means 4 or 9 brigades respectively pointing towards a traditional armoured/ armoured infantry division. This should add up to 1 or 3 divisions.

S Korea has a pretty broad industrial base. The cost comparison withthe Bradley is not entirely appropriate even though there is in a similar class.The Bradley as it is evolved has much more complex armor and is quite a bit heavier. When it first came out, to be honest, I wasn't that excited about the Bradley. As it has evolved over the 40 years give or take that it's been around, it has become quite a capable IFV. in some ways this vehicle looks like it took some of the attributes of the m113 and its derivatives while taking some of the attributes of the Bradley. The flotationkind of makes me think of the amphibious with preparation concepts at the English tended to use. The thin flank armor makes me think of the BMP.overall it looks like the nose of a British armored Fighting vehicle got stuck on a M113 Anna Bradley turret got dropped on as an afterthought.
