So happy to listen this Thyagarajaaradhana/1995 video wherein KJJ/Dasettan presented a soulful celebrated rendition of the popular Devagandhari Keerthanam. Devagandhari is a janya raga (derived scale), whose melakarta raga (parent scale, also known as janaka) is Shankarabharanam, 29th in the 72 Melakarta raga system. It is an audava-vakra-sampurna raga meaning, in arohana 5 swaras come (so it is called audava) and in avarohana all swaras come (so sampurna), and there is a "zigzag" pattern of notes (so vakra). The notes used in this ragam are shadjam, chatushruti rishabham, antara gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panchamam, chatushruti dhaivatam and kakili nishadam. This ragam sometimes includes the kaishika nishadam (anya swara - a note external to the scale, making this a bhashanga ragam). Thus some prayogas may use the 'Kaishika- Nishadam..ie. subtlety of rendering kaishikam as fine as hair.!. Probably this will be visible in Rama Rama Pahi' -swathi keerthanam in this ragam set to Rupaka Talam. I love Devagandhari as its to be sung with gamakas and vilambita kala prayogas! Chembai Vaidyanatha Bagawathar and Dasettan's vocal are imprinted in my psyche! ...melodious indeed. Love live Dasettan who presented a very vibrant recital...Best wishes.....

While it is certain that he had his Guru's blessings in his youth, we must understand that at present he is a stalwart and a great Guru in his own right. Please give credit to his own scholarship where it is due. While great Gurus show the path to a person, after a certain time, we must give credit also to the person's own hard work which would also honour the Gurus themselves, in the fact that the student has grown into a stalwart who is given credit as an independent scholar. After a certain stage, just judging a person's performance by the background(like Guru-lineage/place of study) is a slight to both, the person and the background(i.e. the person's Gurus and place of study).
