K'NAAN Interview 2010

Canadian musician K'Naan talks about his experience growing up in Toronto, Canada as an immigrant, getting involved in Gang Life and loosing 8 friends to murder and suicide. K'Naan makes a point that growing up as a black immigrant in improvised areas such as Rexdale, Dixon, Jamestown, Jane and Finch opportunities are limited even in a rich nation such as Canada.

i had soccer game agaist kids from jane and fintch they started hitting us because we wre winning 4-0 so we knew they had a hard life so we let hem score 3 goals to keep their spirits up

As an Canadian immigrant myself, I know exactly what he means. When we first set foot here in Canada we are treated basically with contempt by some people (too many people actually). Most people don't know a thing about the immigration process and they tend to have a very narrow view of it. After awhile people start to respect us once they see that we are are here to stay and that we are nice people (at least most of us).

There needs to be more artists like him. There is too many stupid songs about "being in the hood" or money and sex and glorifying drugs and alcohol. Its disgusting what you see on TV or the shitty songs that are out there.
