There's just a lot of streamers out there. Takes a lot of luck to break out; Jerma was a sleeper for a long time-I'd been watching him since I was in high school, and it didn't seem like he blew up to where he's at now until I was around 23-24. Mike's every bit as entertaining as the bigger guys. He's funny as fuck, his community is great, he has great guests and great chemistry with those guests. It's just that sometimes being a quality streamer doesn't guarantee you'll blow up... at least not right away.

I already said something like this in chat, but I really loved this one. I know immediately post-game there were a lot of people hating on it (both seriously & in a jokey way) but idk, I wanted to be genuine and say how much this game just clicked for me. I'm not able to run it myself, but this stream ended up being a great way to experience it still, especially with Fred's commentary and the discussion at the end. I don't know if Mike reads the comments, but thanks for the great stream- I'm not gonna be able to get this game out of my head for a while now ^^

The parasite is an analogy for instinct, and the player is an analogy for progress/transcendence. I think the game is trying to convey that instinct is a hindrance to progress
@guitarguy423946 ай бұрын
Kinda similar to my thoughts. I thought the player represents the superego as you are born into an unfamiliar world and yearn to gradually evolve to learn its structure and design, while the parasite represents the impulsive id and the comfort of familiarity. The parasite becomes hostile because it has no pressure to learn and evolve due to its dependent life cycle. The mind of the player acts as the ego, the decision maker. As the ego reinforces the superego’s desire to learn and evolve and regulate, the id comes in and gut checks the other two parties and reminds them that they’re part of a bigger system and that none of them can exist independently of the other two. As a whole, I feel the game conveys humanity and how the id will always influence our thoughts and decisions regardless of our level of intellectual development

To this day, I still think Freddie Phat Knutts was mostly complimenting Mike with that "making people feel good at parties" statement. It hits my ears as him saying, if someone was feeling awkward at a party, he would come around and talk to/involve them in the party. Its been awhile, but as I recall, the original context fit that, and Mike took it as a uge diss.
@DeepDiveDevin Жыл бұрын
I feel like this brings down the mood, but it was bothering me so I wanted to make it clear; Fred and Mike describe the reproductive imagery in alien as being "about the horrors of pregnancy", but that feels reductive. Alien is very much about _rape._ If it were just about pregnancy as body horror, the movie would end after John Hurt dies. The Nostromo crew are a family, one that is torn apart when one of them is violated, and the trauma, betrayal and distrust from that, all in the face of uncaring, complicit authority. The alien isn't your child as a monster, it is sexual violation as a monster (it's shaped like a dick for a reason). Weyland-Yutani and Ash are as much uncaring cops and enablers as they are a commentary on capitalism (which, they're also a commentary on capitalism), but the whole incident starts because the trust of the crew and their goodwill are abused for someone else to exert their power over others. While this game is interesting, I feel that subtext is why it doesn't really hit the same. Alien knew to start with the themes, and use Giger as a spice to punctuate those themes. This game uses it as a backdrop, and adds gory effects that weren't really present in the original art (Giger's work is unsettling, but always _pristine)._ As much as it's still unsettling and the gameplay is weighty and cruel, Mike is right about it being "too edgy". You might as well just go play DOOM.
@eveandaedrul Жыл бұрын
You wrote this comment really well, just a thumbs up wasn't enough. I had never considered that subtext about Alien, and had never realized how pristine Giger's art actually was. Your points helped elevate these horrors to a next level for me and I hate you for that. Them just being edgy little monsters etc was not too effective but with these subtexts, they become seriously unsettling. I can't handle horror at all haha

This comment really helped focus in my mind that same sort of "not hitting right" about this game for me. I'm not sure if I'm articulate enough on my own to suss out the rest of my thoughts on it off the bat of it, but thanks for sharing that reminder / comparison between the two works!
@MagicalManFromMars Жыл бұрын
Something to remember here is that the art direction's inspiration is not purely Giger, and saying that is and that it misses the pristine aspect of his art by making it gory is also, in itself, reductive. The inspiration for the creature design, barren planet and atmosphere, gory aspects and themes of decay come from another artist, Beksinski, whose art did prominently feature dirty, sprawling, tattered mass and flesh, bleak vistas, spindly gaunt creatures, figures hung similarly to a crucification like the machines at the end of the game, etc. Scorn is a blending of two styles which are similar, but at the same time in many ways opposite in presentation, which I think in this instance also plays to its own themes, as the aesthetic of the protagonists' race is in opposition to the cancerous growth of the infestation, despite both being of living flesh, one simply venerates experience and stimulation over the physicality while the other is almost pure physicality with barely any experience beyond instinct and barely being alive at all.

The problem wasn't at all the marketing of this game. A trailer of the game was released shortly before the game's launch which included full-on narration. In it, the narrator proclaims "Scorn is NOT a shooter." If people were too fucking braindead to understand this very basic English, the fault is not at all with the game's marketing.

I really am not that into horror games or even first person view games much, but I got SOMA not long ago and Scorn because of Fred's recommendation, thankfully both had big sales at the time I got interested (should I be glad they didn't get as good reception that I got them cheap?). They are literally side to side in my library due to the naming funnily enough, and I feel like its good comparison too, being two games with intricate story lying not on the surface as well as gameplay mechanics that were secondary in terms of importance. Other comparisons are extraordinary world concept, bleak atmosphere as well as puzzles that don't hand solution on silver platter, enemies that need observation and individual approaches to deal with. Both got misunderstood because of these reasons. I will say I did watch the stream in parts and each only after playing the part prior, and had to look up what to do in it only once (labyrinth puzzle). I feel like if I played Scorn before SOMA I may've had more problems, Frictional primed me in a slightly less obtuse way sorta. I wonder somewhat if Fredrick even alluding to the themes made reading it easier, but I think I figured out the core one myself at least. On title menu post ending I figured that the conflict in the game seems to be about mind being opposed to matter, with morality being thrown out the window for this society seemingly. Instinct basically corresponds to matter and body and what the species we play as wants to be detached from completely. I had pretty different read on Parasite or Protagonist 1 and the relationship with Protagonist 2, tho - this read I expanded after hearing Fred's take fully. I think P-1 basically did regain the human sense of closeness and found a need of validation in being part of the journey throughout game, but in a toxic way, and the fault lies in inability to express such, for both sides of the interaction. I don't think the species we are, had quite been total in removing the characteristics that make up humanity in themselves, which are connected to morality as well. One thing that really struck me all of a sudden like one third of the way in game, was that main species (from the genesis wall) all lack mouths, or they are grown over shut. What's the purpose of this? As signifier, it seems a strong way to explain "silent protagonist" type - they lack verbal ability from birth, and it's also reference to "I have no mouth and I must scream", self-explanatorily. I'm pretty sure not all crucified in the temple were like that btw, which is interesting but I don't feel like going into that topic. The idea that they aren't capable of communication, but in fact do have underlying desires associated with it, makes pragmatic convenience of parasite (P-1) and P-2, pretty much all that they've got going on. Is P-2 then even aware of his human emotions? I feel the conflict comes down to this - the removal of ability to communicate or even engage with another is represented in P-2 that doesn't understand what his body communicates to him, much less how to communicate to others (i mean tbf he was born yesterday), hence he desires just removing the body from equasion (which however appealing for him, would be wrong for thematic reasons to work). The reason the world is full of bodily horrors thematically is because most of our POV is from P-2. Notably, he is a passive receiver in relationship with parasite for most of it, he didn't fight it at all until it became an obstacle - I think explainable by lack of learned and intuitive ideas humans have about, well, human interaction. P-1 started out the same, however he has mutated and expresses his drive more clearly because of it; even having something like a mouth (which screams a lot). Regardless, it's undoubtable P-1 wasn't able to progress outside of that and is driven by impulse it cannot control. In this world, where nothing can be expressed in non-physical way pretty much, connecting between beings is literal (which correlates with the reading I had of the cancer-fellows, who seem to strive for community and connectedness until disturbed, however literal it works with them and however sentient you can even consider them). Then, if you are Parasite, how would it feel to be ripped out of the life of someone you connected closely to? Someone you've been helpful the entire time, but the first moment you became inconvenient you got thrown out? Not fun experience. I think Parasite was in tune with the emotions it had, and expressive about it, it didn't want to be object of scorn and maliciously ruined what P-2 worked for, scorning the prospect of mental transcending it probably wanted originally, in return. Logically it brought no benefit and doomed them, but P-1 did it impulsively. I don't think my read actually conflicts with much of what Fredrik interpreted, and his view massively helped me form some of mechanics of this world outside of what I said, I'd have to think deeply to come up with another read for those. If you read thus far, cool! Have an achivement - you wasted your time ^^. Tbh I don't think my friend group would be into this game - this way I got my fresh thoughts somewhere out there. What do you think; would you try SOMA if you haven't? It's pretty much just as thought-provoking (but I guess is different category of game, even if semantically, and has uncountable differences aside what I mentioned, but still something that felt to me worth recommending in same comment).

Ugh, I hate that I'm always liking a lot something that a lot of people straight up hate but oh well. I'm genetically contrarian ig. The only thing I knew about this game is that it only had the art direction as their strongest feat and even tho I can't disagree with that statement, there's so much more going on in this game and I love that Fred did (kinda) put into words a lot that I was realizing as the game revealed more and more of its landscapes. I'm the type of person that likes to think that when things are depicted in a weird way, its because there's something to perceive on it (or at the very least think about.) You can think it is all bullshit that is creepy and disgusting for the sake of shock and I think thats fine but I feel that's only a way for people to just dismantle anything that makes them a little bit uncomfortable and then they throw everything else into the trash can and I think that's a little bit sad. I accept the flaws of this game, like the sameness of every room (even if I feel it is the point) but I think in general is a great game that may be remembered as a cult classic in 10 or more years. This game 100% reminds me of those old cryptic AF games but with upgraded graphics and I love it.

I normally tend to agree with Fred and I love artsy stuff that is way too full of itself and all of that, but I'm gonna have to disagree here. :( Granted, my only experiences with Scorn are what I saw in this stream and what both of them had to say about it, so I know my opinion on the subject isn't worth much or even fully informed, but at a glance, it does look like Scorn is just trite, and "shallow and pedantic", or "insists upon itself". 😳 I think it's one of those things where the aesthetics of depth and intellectualism make it seem like it's more poignant and profound than it is. I do think that there are themes and there is a vision and an artistic intention, but I don't think it's as deep or as profound as people say it is. I also think Fred took a completely different reading of it, because it seems to me that childbirth and reproduction are way bigger themes than all of that stuff about experience. I dunno. It frustrates me because I normally like these types of artistic projects, but it seems like this one was left to interpretation because the developers couldn't really come up with an explanation for all of the surrealist stuff they put in the game, but they also wanted people to think that it had one. Even if I try to look at the game with Fred's interpretation in mind, I don't think it really says much about those topics or explains or elaborates those ideas any further than just presenting them. Maybe I'd have to play it myself to truly get it, but right now I'm feeling pretty s c o r n e d about this game, which is a shame because I really wanted to like it.

I love this game but I think Fred is reading too much into this. To me, it's clear the game is meant to represent discomfort and anxiety around reproduction, specifically the seemingly esoteric nature of its physicality and rituals. It simply utilises a surreal grotesque and oppressive atmosphere to reflect these feelings of unease. All of the obscure and cryptic body horror settings and tasks are simply to mirror how fucking weird reproduction is objectively. For this reason, it is intentional that there aren't meant to be mechanistic explanations to many of the aspects of the game. It is meant to be opaquely obtuse and mysterious.

I agree with this so much. The parasite also feels super relevant to this reading, since many people who are afraid or disgusted by the concept of pregnancy often describe it as "having a parasite growing inside you for 9 months". The surgical extraction of the parasite and the parasite later coming back to attack the player character also raise some interesting questions or thematical implications, like, it could be interpreted as the guilt or trauma of abortion coming back to haunt that individual, or it could also be symbolic of detaching yourself from your child and them growing to be resentful of you as a parent. I feel like these are more in line with what the game was trying to say and what it explicitly shows, as opposed to the idea of a society who seeks intense experiences.
