I think it genderswaps because the women tend to show more neck, which the bot interprets as a large chin, and they tend to have lots of hair and it makes some of the hair into a large face. The men usually have less neck to extend the face and they have less hair, with the less cartoony hair the bot is better at actually interpreting it into hair. Thus it sees the male sprites as a smaller face with hair so it makes a woman and doesn't know what the fuck to do with the female ones

I can't explain it too well, but I'd like to mention that the AI doesn't keep a database of facial elements, but rather a memory of facial features. So what you're seeing aren't pasted together collages from real existing faces, but instead the AI's best effort to actually generate a face after it learned what a face might look like.
