1994 Moe Norman golf swing demo - PGA Interview (part 1 of 2)

Moe Norman Interview for the 1994 PGA coaching and teaching summit.
This video is shared with the permission of the PGA of America who filmed this in 1994. The Q&A is from PGA member Craig Shankland who has released this Moe Norman demo at no charge to the public.
This video is for all the Moe Norman fans out there. It is not instruction, and I no longer teach Moe's Golf swing. Having learned a lot from Moe and having taught his swing for many years I learned why most golfers fail at copying him as they fail in copying other golfers swings. In the schools teaching his swing I would watch golfer after golfer hit the ball poorly without being able to make simple adjustments that would help them hit the ball better right away. So I left the company teaching his swing (or trying to) and started my own method which takes some elements that I learned from Moe and formed my Setup 4 Impact golf method, which allows for very fast improvement with no loss of distance or accuracy. Moe's a great teacher for young kids to establish a great set of fundamentals about ball striking. Having said that, Moe was an eccentric type guy with the best of intentions, but incorrect in that all the PGA Champions win NOT hitting the ball entirely like him. Moe strikes the goofball with perfection, but the PGA Tour guys do, as well. You don't shoot 58's, 61's, 62's & 63's swinging a bad club. So, much respect to Moe, but Larry, Curly, Shemp & Joe say he's great -- but only in his own mind.

When I watched the Moe Normon program about his life I was shocked and hurt for him at the treatment he recieved from other PGA professionals who literally drove him from the tour, where I believe he would have won a very high %ge of tourney's. Also when I heard Titliest presented Moe with a $ 5K a month stipend for supporting their products his entire life, wonderful stuff.

He was comfortable and at ease with children. Very wary of adults. He had few adult friends. To meet or speak with Moe one was introduced to him by his friends. I always felt he was exploited by Natural Golf. His nature was childlike and very sensitive. Most likely due to some form of autism. Difficult to know exactly. Truly unique human being. Never saw him without a club in his hands. If not a club then he would hold a ball or two. I have a picture of me standing next to him. A treasured remembrance of this man. R.I.P. Moe.

After watching every online video of Moe including every Graves golf video, I understand now why he started the club so far behind the ball but not because of what he says in this video. If he starts the club directly behind the ball as he come down to it, the face could be slightly open or closed. He starts it there because as he come down into the same point the club will be around square but it's the lateral movement toward the target which keeps the club square through impact. So, like he says, he is square through impact longer, that's why it goes straight everytime. The lateral motion toward the target makes the club path straight towards the target. There is another old video of someone critiquing Moe and drawing lines on the video. He shows Moes hand path through the downswing and it's not an arc like you would expect, you see the path stay lateral straight towards the target for about 12inches at least and the person narrating calls it an exquisite move.

Not the most modest of men, to be certain. Enough so that he rubbed his fellow competitors the wrong way. Until they finally ostracized him from the tour. Yet, onlly Ben Hogan knew as much about the golf swing as Moe Norman. A pure genius of simplicity. From the wider base for more balance, to standing further away so he could extend his arms better. His right hand grip is also contrary to what is taught. Out of the fingers and into the palm for greater feel. And no twisting in the right hand whatsoever!! I would say his Number One Move though is placing the club at least four to six inches behind the ball at address. There are too many advantages to this to count. As he said it eliminates a full foot of the swing. It takes the club back straighter and slower. It opens the rear shoulder at address for greater turn at the outset. It takes the club back lower to create a similar swing arc as well. Other than that it's not that good!! One subtle, final aspect of his swing that you will notice is he had almost no bend in his knees at address. Whether this was right or wrong, his posture never changed. If your knees don't bend its impossible to have an inconsistent setup in your legs. Every variable, every dumb thing a player could do in his swing was eliminated. His only weakness was he constantly reminded everyone exactly how great he was. Players that good don't like to be reminded how much better he was than them. Even if it was true! Moe Norman was an almost unparalleled genius. A fact he was keenly aware of. And he made certain others knew it as well.

@donaldschmidt2990 yes he let everyone know for sure how great he was…and he was! I knew him relatively well and hit many balls with him one on one. There’s no doubt he was misunderstood all his life so as he got older you could sense he was frustrated in that no one ever tried to learn from him. He felt the world wasn’t taking notice and being older he wanted his voice to be heard about his methods. To leave a legacy. He obviously couldn’t teach it in the traditional sense of the word. Up here in eastern Canada (specifically Ontario and Quebec) he would tour and put on dozens of clinics as a means to make ends meat. He almost had a mythical folklore type status about him at that time. We can thank Mark Evershed (PGA of Canada like myself) and Lorne Rubenstein for getting the word out about Moe. We already knew up here what a living legend he was and thankfully Golf Digest came out with him on the cover in December 95. The rest is history.

Been watching this video since it first came out on KZbin. Always learn something new. I knew Moe from way back. (I'm almost 80.) What they) don't tell you is Moe was gifted with incredible coordination. What that means is simple: what you see here is NOT that simple. That's why you rarely find a golfer who has success with his single-plane swing, even after sometimes days of practice. THE HARDEST THING TO DO IN GOLF IS TO HIT THE BALL STRAIGHT. He did it without even trying, and for hours on end. But another thing they don't tell you is that he also could do it with any kind of swing out there. But it's fun trying. Until, that is, it becomes apparent that most people just can't do what he did, period. In any case, good luck.

Am thanking him also for his best golf tip he inadvertently taught me, by virtue of his once statement he replied to the viewers asking him what was his “secret” for the pure consistent golf prowess, he said: “I WON’T TELL YOU BUT SHOW YOU!” At this junction that I resolved to stop listening to what he was saying but not actually doing, and me, just keenly watching/observing how he executed his golf prowess and copy instead! Only if you can guarantee that your accurate 3 wood can be as precise as Dustins 9-iron, etc. Problem is that even if you could just point a 2 iron where you wanted it, there are lots of places where you cannot stop it in time, where as a rockhard 7-iron WILL stop and yes then it might go 10 yards left/right but it will hold the green.

Two words come to mind after watching these two videos of Moe Norman: Unique, Fascinating. I don't know if I will ever be able to hit another golf ball now! I have only watched Mr. Norman a few times in the past, but only for a short time. I really enjoyed these two part videos of such a unique and different approach to the basic fundamentals of a golf swing. To say his methods were different would be a drastic understatement. However, some fundamentals were right in line with what is basically taught in golf. I learned like most true golfers from Ben Hogans Five Lessons. I wish the narrator would have asked Moe what he thought about Ben Hogan's swing thoughts because they are so different. His grip philosophy, swing plane, body movements, feet position and hip rotation verses upper body rotation are so different than what is taught. Moe is exactly right about the individual aspect of people's abilities to swing a golf club and make solid contact. His mental approach, I. E. smelling the shot, not just visually seeing it is his genius.

This is a great swing for those of us who have given up on the fact that we'll ever hit the ball long, im 5-7 with stocky build, I'll never create enough speed to hit it long, I've been using this swing for years, I only hit it 215 of the tee, and I'm using 5 wood and hybrid alot into the green, but always straight, haven't shot over 90 in 10 years, now granted I've only broke 80 5 times but for a recreational golfer, it makes golf fun to always play well, imo this swing isn't for the aspiring collegiate golfer or pro, but it's wonderful for a recreational golfer, and you can win some $ too when you always hit it straight lol

I started the Moe Norman conversion last year. 59 yrs old with a bad back. Couldn't make it thru a round and started slicing everything, cause I couldn't turn with the conventional swing. Golf was no longer fun. Had to do something. My game is so much better now and the back doesn't bother me when I play! Sunday afternoon after "The Open" I went to my local club and played 9. Pretty slow as it was getting later in the day. On number 9 I hit a drive about 260, threw down another ball and hit it. When I got to the balls they were literally 18 inches apart. Not side by side, one slightly in front of the other. Looked back at the tee box and you could have drawn a straight line backwards to side of the tee box I teed off from. I have never been a good golfer, now people actually tell me I hit some of the nicest purest shots they ever see. Scores are in upper 70's lowers 80's. Use to be upper 80's and 90's. But like everyone else I need to improve my short game! All I can say is don't make fun of it till you try it!

He also was playing the last hole of a tournament leading by one. Par 5, hit second shot next to the green, chipped it sideways into the bunker and got it up and down, just because. I got to see him hit balls at the world cup 1993 at Lake Nona. Had about 50 people around him and some of the greatest players watching him put on a show with someone elses clubs, was fantastic.

But through all his videos he talks about A: never hitting a bad shot mentally, even when one does happen, I’ve seen a good handful of bad shots from Moe, fat, tops, thin, pulls, etc. but mentally he never lets that effect him. And B: while there are certain fundamentals and truths about the basic physics of hitting a golf ball, each player is different and should work around they’re natural tendencies and not try to just copy another player to a T. That doesn’t mean players shouldn’t work on and make changes to their swings to improve but simply trying to swing someone else’s swing is almost never going to create great success. The best teachers in the world know this and is why you see such a huge variety of swings on all the tours, yet there are still common dynamics and timing that are the real secrets of the game. I think Moe wouldn’t agree with some of these modern teachers trying to make every players swing a carbon copy of his or any swing, they’re taking away the players natural strength of movements. You can learn from other players but you need to own your own swing. RIP Moe ⛳️🧙‍♂️💭

He knew he could hit it dead straight because of his fundamentals. My experience teaching his swing has shown that anybody will improve when copying Moe if they do it in the correct manner. Moe was so right in what he is shown us, I for one and many other golfers held the club (grip) mainly in the fingers This grip of Moe's obviously made him different and in which doing so made him so consistent, just a shame he found it hard to mix with other and playing world wide! For I am sure that most of the UK have never heard of Moe Norman! He is history now- a dinosaur in which many of us never seen! But the good news is that there are a few guys on the net teaching Moe's swing - if you fancy trying out Moe's swing - then you won't find a better teacher in Todd Greaves Check him out you won't be disappointed!

Around 21:00 he is talking about having left arm above right. Look up the axe drill by Pete Cowen. The takeaway and downswing like that, but you need to turn and pull the left arm like he says, to shallow the club. You also need to pivot your pelvis on the same axist so your right butt pushes back against an imaginary wall, and then on downswing left butt pushes into the wall.., spinning the pelvis on the same plane as you sway, This is the key to consistent striking when you don't know what to do with your arms...

Mind is blown. I'm watching this to kill time before heading to work. I just went into my garage and grabbed my 9 iron just to try the grip out. I then saw a little 4 inch long piece of paper lying on the concrete. It had a tiny arch in it that had the middle of the paper strip about 3/32" off the floor. And, being crazy as I am, I swung at it pretty hard using this technique. Caught the paper and never touched the concrete with the toe. It looks and sounds for all the world like he's hitting thin, but he's catching it perfectly. If it worked out that way on concrete, I can't wait to go try it on the range!
