Even the greatest billiard players of all times missed straight on shots occasionally. Moe didn't,( or so he says). Think of that! I never watched Moe in person but I've had the good fortune of watching, filming, and even talking to, dozens of the great players going back to Bobby Jones and I never saw one who could do this. In '56 I did watch Sarazen demonstrate bunker and medium wedge shots and he was incredible, but nothing like Moe. Excellent - I've watched Moe hundreds of times but one this one with the zoom-in, he very clearly illustrates the BENEFIT of preventing the left leg from bending laterally. True, the sideways bend often leads to excessive hip rotations which leads to shots that draw, hook or even duck hooks! Don't ask me how I know - suffice it to say I've reformed from focusing on strong left hip "Reverse C" rotation and moving to the Single Plane Swing that prevents left knee rotation at impact - NAUGHTY, LOL!

This is good stuff. Just keep in mind what all good ball strikers tell you: the golf club is the extension of your arms. Thats exactly what Moe is doing. His arms and the club are just on line while addressing the ball. Try it and your will see the difference in the swing. I tried it myself and it deffinitely works!

I’ve had that feeling. 1,500 a day, five mishits max. Marvelous... but I wasted it. Biggest regret of my life was choosing a head pro job instead of playing. My advice to kids, NEVER forsake what makes you feel special for what makes you feel secure.

The secret to hitting straight shots is getting face aligned to target not at impact but when the ball releases off the face. If you watch the action of Moe’s grip carefully you will see it allowed his wrists to hinge back a lot in the backswing but they locked when coming back to how he oriented them when lining up his body to the ball. When the wrist come back and lock it creates a law of physics reaction that causes the ball stuck to the face to explode off more then in the conventional swing which is a non-stop sweep through the ball. At impact he lifted up his back foot to keep everything moving, swinging the club up without the wrists turning over in the finish as they do when using the Vardon grip. I’m aware of two other golfers who used the same “lock wrists to square face” ball release technique: Ben Hogan and Harry Frankenberg (aka Count Yogi). And me, I adopted that technique into my swing a dozen years ago after studying and emulating the swings of those three. At the time I was working at a course where the teaching pro taught the single plane swing as part of the Todd Graves franchise using a set of same length irons.

The thing I love most about his swing is that his hands never get above his shoulders. I have been doing same thing for 2yrs now and have been hitting ball much straighter....Thanks Moe.. RIP.

We all make it way too hard.... listen to what he says and apply some of it to your swing. we'd all be better golfers. I've been using a similar club distance behind the ball to initiate my shoulder turn and I'm going to tell you it really has helped me hit the ball more accurately. Turn your shoulders, torso, arms & club about 2 feet behind (a little to the inside would be natural for some) the ball & start your swing from there. give it a try and laugh when you hit it solid.

Keys to Moe's swing (in order, in my opinion, of importance): 1) Set up with club and arm triangle on same plane 2) Well braced and flexed trail leg 3) "X" factor (more rotation of rib cage than hips) 4) Right elbow stays in relative position to rib cage back and through 5) Left shoulder stays reasonably well connected Distance from the ball is a matter of body type and comfort. While Moe gripped with the palms against the shaft, I can just about guarantee he held the club lightly in the finger tips. That's the feel of a one plane set-up. I especially like watching his short pitch shots...the arm triangle stays dead on plane; as pure as you can get. edit: Stupid me, I had set up last. It all starts there.

I know he says to study your own swing, I agree, but there is a lot of good tips here to incorporate into any swing. Hogan built a swing to counter his flaws. Norman didn't do that. He built one that works. I don't see how this move couldn't work for almost anyone. Edit: I never get tired of watching this. Moe's swing may have been unique in the way he setup but the club moves flawlessly on plane and is consistently pointing at the plane when it's not parallel to it. Changing how a person sets up doesn't fix their swing. Changing how the club travels does change the swing and the setup will sort itself out. I was at this presentation and at the time, I had not heard of Moe. I sat there in disbelief. I rolled my eyes when Shankland said "here's the greatest ball striker." I was like "Moe, who?" 😂
@chrisb5943 жыл бұрын
If you watch the slow motion at the end, notice how little hip and shoulder rotation he has. I know the camera angle maybe misleading but as he said almost no hip rotation. This seems very logical because for most people, hitting straight from a half swing is not so difficult. It's only when we rotate that we start to complicate the swing and find it difficult to consistently get back to the same moment of impact.
