Brother of the chrome dome...LOL! Man you had a great day, I'm envious. I'm thinking of getting a 891 or a x5105 to start POTA myself but still weighing the pros and cons. Watching you is getting me itching to get out, now just to get the time off work and a good radio. 73 de W8MJL
@hamradiotube5 жыл бұрын
Haha! Well there's a lot to consider between the 2 radios. Do you only care about doing qrp? Do you want to have more power if needed but carry an external power source? Do you want a tuner built in but sacrifice power, or do you want to use resonant antennas (like I do) and have high power? If you aren't using resonant antennas, do you want to carry an external tuner? How much "stuff/weight" do you want to carry in general? I can go very light weight with a resonant antenna on 1 band with a very small pack (891, speaker wire antenna, and battery), or I can go a little heavier with the Wolf River Coils and have all bands? A lot to consider. Obviously, I've made my choice. Now you have to make yours. Good luck with the time off though. Thats the biggest challenge!
@W8MJL5 жыл бұрын
@@hamradiotube YL and I will be going to Myrtle Beach in September and i'm hoping to try activating K-2907 south of town while we're there. I like the idea of light weight portable but i think just starting out that i need to just try activating first under normal power, i can get to QRP later on. I've made a resonant dipole out of lamp cord i found but haven't had the time to test it out....YET. So i think i'll just go with the 891 for the power and add in a Bioenno. You've given me food for thought and i'm always hungry. thanks again for the videos and hope to see you at ham fest. 73 de W8MJL

You gotta get the 10 generic or mfj external speaker back out. Well, it makes my portable outdoor ops much more enjoyable. Or, when you're not doing a video, use earbuds or headphones. The receiver in the 891 is good enough to make those really sing.

How do you like your FT 891? I have a similar setup as well. You should consider getting a good solar panel to help the battery, With the right battery/solar combo on a good sunny day you would have zero issues for power and go full throttle if you want.
