I swore at my mom once when I was younger and just remember looking up the stairs from the basement at her and her just saying, "wait till I tell your father when he gets home!" and slamming the door shut. I spent the remainder of the time waiting for my dad to get home looking for a spot to hide but it didn't work lol.

It is intersting how in America it's illegal to lay a hand on your child, and yet with these videos you see most dads still are willing to do it. It goes to show, most parents still know punishment works. I don't mean hurting your child of course, but like spanking and stuff. Worked on me. Worked on many I know. Good to see people still believe in it. Treating your child like a friend instead, does NOT do anything except make them not care about when you are upset.
@madamii

You know there's a middle ground right? You can be harsh to get it through to them that they're not supposed to do something, but not have to hit your kid. Words can be just as effective.

@@rockabilly1347 Spanking is one thing, but my brother got the belt because my dad was raised the same way. My paternal grandfather whooped my dad with a belt and his sisters got spanked. As did I because I was a girl I got it easier.
@praxton
@praxton 2 жыл бұрын
You definitely don't need to resort to physical violence or even spanking. That's an emotional response, not a corrective one. You're an adult not a drunk teenager trying to prove yourself. A stern voice and confronting the issue and its root cause go much further than just lashing out and hitting kids. Spanking is lazy parenting and just regurgitating what your parents did. "It worked for me" doesn't pass muster because you're clearly ok striking a child. That's not ok. Even if it's a teenager. If you're not ok with your kids resorting to physical violence to resolve their issues, you can't be ok with it for yourself especially when it relates to dealing with issues in your own home. And we all know plenty of kids who are spanked and hit and see it not have the desired effect. Maybe at home, they "behave" out of fear of being whooped, but they unleash that anger and frustration out into the world. It doesn't work. No matter what your parents and holy books say.

You’re right Kabir when you say too many parents want to be their kids’ pal. It’s because they’re irresponsible. It’s easier to say yes than to stand your ground and say no. Kids need love, affection, discipline and guidance. My friend took the easy route when raising his daughter. When she was 16, she fought him physically. By the time she was on her, they weren’t talking to each other. She got married and had a child. My friend doesn’t see his granddaughter. If he had been the parent he should have been, he would have had a relationship with his daughter and granddaughter. Like you said Kabir, the friendship comes later. Parents need to be parents.

I had equal fear of both my parents. I love and respect them both. But I feared my mom for her daily stresses, my dad for the built up anger. I am being very fair here. I have more fear of my deceased mother who was my best friend then teenagers who performed a self-abortion. She used to come home from her job at the power company call center (she answered your calls, literally hour after hour of angry people who needed to take it out on her for every person who called before they did) and if our room of the household wasn't clean when she came in, then she'd lose it. Tbf, she was a bit of a Karen after she had to give up beer...she learned she had a yeast allergy. She had a bunch of bad things happen in a small amount of time and it messed her up.

If I had a child who swore at me or told me to shut up, I would NOT need to wait till his father got home so Dad could handle it. I am perfectly capable of handling my own child when he misbehaves, and I don't think it's fair to assign Dad the roll of ENFORCER so child can direct his anger at Dad and think I am his good friend or his buddy. A child doesn't need a parent to be his buddy. He has classmates for that. He needs a parent to be a parent, and that's BOTH parents, not just his father! Just MHO!

I used to live in fear and be easily intimidated by not just my parents, but any lowlifes, authority figures, etc. I remember the day that started to change. I was watching a show with my father where someone told a story about someone being rude to them, and I was like, "I'd never tolerate that." My father was like, "yeah, right, you'd be too scared to say anything." I decided in that moment that this would never be true again, and I changed. I began using the raccoon approach. Some animals will run away if afraid of something. Raccoons will run towards the thing in hopes of scaring it away first. Then if someone threatened to assault me or use a weapon on me, I was like "I'm right here -- go ahead." Someone screams at me; I scream back. Someone throws something at me; I throw something back. I may someday get arrested or end up in a coma, but I'll damn sure never deescalate a situation. My idea of conflict resolution is scorched earth.
