I've been following Tati since she first went viral for her WTF series. She was the inspiration for my channel in the first place! And since spending the entire year of 2019 exploring clean beauty, I wanted to touch on where we've been since then, and why I find some of the claims Tati's been making lately...problematic.

oh my God, I watched that video and didn't even realize how problematic it was. She just had this very Godly type of style of talking and I felt a little bad as I watched - "wow she's doing so great and look at my life, I am eating cheetos and don't have the discipline to eat healthy and be clean." Thank you for putting this video out for people like me who could get influenced and start to feel bad about themselves - which is not cool. I wasn't necessarily going to take her advice as an expert and completely do what she's saying but the video had this sort of underlying telepathic message that 'she's got it all together and I am a mess..'

As someone who is disabled and had to go to LOTS of doctors to figure out my diagnosis, I can understand her frustration. I’m glad she’s feeling better and found things that works for her. HOWEVER. Giving advice on diets and telling people they need to try harder while she sits in a walk-in closet almost the size of my apartment, is borderline enraging. Moms doing testing? No. That’s not something I trust. And if she want to educate herself she need to literally educate herself formally, not scroll on the internet.

I've never seen her tell people to try harder, in fact she's often at pains to tell people it's her journey and they have to do what's best for them. I think Tati herself is very easily influenced. Even with the large audience she has, it’s always seemed to me that she kind of clings to people or areas where she feels included, but those relationships are seemingly over before they start and after they explode she starts looking for the next person or thing to fill the void. In many ways she seems like that little girl who has a hard time making friends, so at the first sign of friendship she goes overboard and starts referring to someone she just met as her “best friend” and she inadvertently smothers the relationship but is so desperate for a real experience and to be included that she just keeps repeating the cycle.

I feel like Tati has always tried really hard to fit in any and everywhere, but never quite made it “in”. I’ve watched her videos for quite a while and I wish she would recognize and embrace the influence shes already cultivated instead of snubbing what she has now to try and climb to what she thinks is the next rung “above” her. She’s subconsciously void-filling. It makes me kind of sad. She’s a truly gorgeous woman in her 40s whose self confidence is worn like a mask instead of being rooted from within.

I have a thyroid disease. I can’t eat gluten and many animal products are actually harmful to me. They act as literal hormone disrupters. Tati’s suggestions would literally cause me physical pain and harm. Many people who share her thoughts on food, would tell me “you have to get all the bad out before you feel better”. I’d end up in a hospital. Instead, I keep up to date on thyroid disease research and prevention. Because I can’t afford clinical trials and studies. I can’t afford Fiji by the case. I can’t afford to be wrong about a diet for a while and not end up hospitalized. Her video made me very sad and upset when I watched it bc young me would have taken it to heart and tried it all. It’s also sad because she doesn’t count her saved marriage, moving away from a toxic environment (LA), and being in a very sunny/warm environment where she can freely go outside to do healthy activities. These drastically reduced her stress, improved her life, and are things that would dramatically improve her health as well.

I've been so confused by Tati's clean beauty journey. Like she got an eye infection so she threw out all her old mascaras. Good move. Then she replaced them with all "clean" mascaras and I'm like, girl you know those are going to go bad twice as fast as your old ones and you're not good about throwing them out right? Also you're so right about healing your gut being personal. I had the same issue for like 15 years, and for like 10 years all I could eat without my stomach exploding was mashed potatoes which is a nightshade and the literal opposite of what most doctors would recommend. The same diet worked for me, my cousin and my aunt so it must be something in the genetics, but getting on the internet and telling the world probably wouldn't help anyone who wasn't directly related to me 😂

As a chronically ill person, I’ve noticed that there’s this notion that if you have long-term issues/chronic illnesses, diabilities etc, you’re just not doing “enough” to be healthy again and you’re lazy for not trying every possible diet/excersise/wellness thing or whatever out there. Not only is it not accessible for everyone, it’s extremely tiring and for a person who already is disabled or chronically ill, there is often not enough energy in them to keep doing all of that.

I can also say that when it’s bad, doing it can be impossible, and even when you force yourself, you'll just get more tired. It’s like, good to hear taking up running fixed helped when you were sad, but that isn’t treatment for severe clinical depression. YES KACKIE, YES. Thank you for this video. I was diagnosed with celiac disease earlier this year (at the age of 29, estimated that I went undiagnosed for around a decade), and let me tell you, the fact that gluten was a randomly demonized “cut this from your diet for optimization/wellness” ingredient a few years ago does NOT help when it comes to explaining the severity and actual biology of this disease. Also the fact that people throw the word “inflammation” around in the vaguest possible way isn’t really helping anyone. If gluten causes someone repeated inflammation, then that person probably has celiac disease-it’s literally diagnosed by assessing the visible damage caused by repeated, autoimmune-based inflammation of the digestive system. Also, gluten is one composite set of proteins out of what, thousands? A lot of milder digestive issues could be caused by any number of things that we haven’t isolated or identified yet. This isn’t to discount anyone’s journey with potential gluten sensitivity or intolerance (we’re all just trying to figure out our own weird and particular bodies, and we often do that exploration imperfectly and that’s okay). But I do experience the broader societal consequences of this imprecision, in that knowledge about my diagnosable, “yikes your body has this very specific problem” disease is muddied up with dumb wellness junk science about “feeling your best.” I didn’t feel bad for 10 years because I ate “processed” or “unhealthy” food, I felt bad because I had an illness. Now I get to feel WAY better than I ever have before as an adult, even on days when I eat “junk” food that would make these optimized/self-actualized people lose their minds. And anyway, most people don’t feel low-energy because they’re drinking fluoridated water or whatever the new bogeyman is for these people, they feel bad because they have too much work and stress and not enough money and rest! Okay love you bye rant overrr (also everyone listen to Maintenance Phaseeeee)

I’m currently a medical student getting ready for graduation, so I only really know enough to be dangerous lol. But, I really appreciated your nuanced comments on this topic. As far as nutrition goes, physicians aren’t trained AT ALL in nutrition and diet. We are woefully under educated in that area and there are some who do a lot of work to become more educated. But I think it’s important for people to realize where a doctor’s expertise lies and it isn’t in giving nutritional advice. Our expertise is in treating acute disease processes and managing medications for long term outcome benefits. I love being able to consult my dietician and nutritionist colleagues so that my patients can receive good and validated information. Side note, Kackie, I LOVE the way you present nuanced opinions about topics like this, these things can be hard for people to talk/hear about and navigate it so gracefully and in such a caring way while still being your chaotic self. I also dont think women's healthcare is taken seriously or really taught well. It's under researched and female patients are often dismissed and gaslit by their doctors. That's why an extremely common condition like endometriosis takes on average 8-10 yrs just to diagnose. And endometriosis is more common than asthma and diabetes, yet doctors seem completely oblivious about its existence 👀. Maybe if GIs and urologists learned about women's healthcare more they wouldn't misdiagnose endometriosis as IBS, Crohn's, Gluten intolerance, IC, etc. 🤔. The gaslighting and dismissal I think turns patients to alternative medicine out of desperation, and causes mistrust in traditional medicine. Both Tati and her one sister have endo, and they discussed their battle to just be diagnosed and treated. Her sister was studying to be nurse and even she was frustrated at how US healthcare just doesn't care about women's well-being.

@@autumnmoore08 Abbey has a tendency to criticize or cherry pick research in a way suggests she is terrified of potentially “feeding” into people’s orthorexic tendencies, even if it may be scientifically sound and beneficial for people with very specific nutritional needs. For example, she poo-pooed a lot of the research presented by glucose goddess even though it is very well studied and potentially very helpful for people with insulin resistance (which is WAY more common than people realize). She also tried to encourage people with PCOS (usually driven by insulin resistance) to eat intuitively and refused to recommend lower carb diets (which the research shows are usually better for insulin resistance). And even worse, insulin resistance compromises lots of people’s ability to eat intuitively! It’s just not a safe approach for many people but there was zero acknowledgement of that body of research. As someone with PCOS if I followed her advice and ate intuitively I would literally get sicker. Which is crazy because she also has PCOS. But Abbey has had her own issues with orthorexia and I think it makes her overly concerned with coming off as too black-and-white or too prescriptive with dietary guidelines. But IMO she has allowed this concern to bias her so much that it makes her a poor resource for people with metabolic issues and other special dietary needs, who really do need a more prescriptive approach! I also find her tendency to review and critique KZbinr diets to be extremely dicey, ethically speaking. She is not their dietitian, and she is encouraging her viewers (who are also not dietitians) to evaluate and critique other people’s diets… IDK. I suppose it can be educational but I think the format is potentially more harmful more than helpful.

@@Updog89 I totally see what you're saying!(I also have PCOS btw, and have found that intuitive eating is only intuitive if you know how your body reacts to what you consume... at that point, is it intuitive, or is it just informed decision making...) I have wondered about the ethics of reviewing the diets of others as well, and I think that it's good when there is an influencer spreading misinformation/ overly restrictive diets that someone steps in to let others know what could possibly be harmful, but I also wonder about the effect it may have on the original individual who posted their diet. It's definitely a slippery slope. As far as what you mentioned regarding her disregard for research, I haven't ran into that, but I more or less appreciate it when she debunks health myths and buzz words used to push diet culture.

Bravo for taking this on. Tati since the beginning of her channel, cycles through these “personal revelations of wellness’, especially when her popularity starts to decline. As an individual who still struggles with an eating disorder for over half my life, she’s doing exactly the behaviours that individuals like myself have done to fuel the disorder. She won’t stop because she can’t until she finally realizes her own health issues are self created, not unlike many of us who struggle with eating disorders.

kackie you're The best. as a longtime tati watcher (i fell off after bye sister gate and i never got back into the groove of watching her, but i used to watch her religiously in college and she was one of my biggest beauty influences) i just could not get into her more recent content and her "clean" language never sat right with me. it's so unfortunate that we have so many influencers that aren't just ignorant (and i don't mean that in a derogatory sense, but in the literal sense; they really don't understand biology, chemistry or even basic cosmetic chemistry) but also make confident claims without considering the breadth of their audiences or the weight of their word. i've been watching your videos since the end of the clean routine 2019 days, though i never commented and idk why when you have some of my favorite content!!! but i appreciate how articulate you are and how considerate you always are, you always make sure to account for experiences and opinions that don't align with your own but you follow the hard rules of logic! and that's so important for a discussion like this one. i'm extremely thankful that you made your points about dogwhistles and peterson's affiliations, and i hope that if tati sees this video, she understands how the harmful associations formed around clean beauty can be so insidious. thank you for this video, even if you weren't able to cover everything you wanted to say it was pretty comprehensive and easy to follow. sorry for the mini essay, but i'm looking forward to your upcoming videos and deeply appreciate your perspective!!! ❤❤❤ in the vein of a gothamista sign-off, wishing you the best of skin (and gut) health!

The whole not naming things but saying "do your own research" with a warning tone is totally fear-mongering and directing ppl nowhere specific and thus nowhere safe or necessarily informed. I understand she's trying to avoid backlash but the vague language, disgusted body language and attitudes she shares when talking about things we all consistently consume or are in contact with... totally encourages a fear of the unknown. And like you said.. there's alot of UNKNOWNS. diving into that.. worrying about things out of our control and being "awake", for anxious or type A types can be utterly unraveling. the minerals in my tap water do much less harm to my brain than her fears would do if they lived in my head

There are so many self proclaimed health experts who come out and judge those who can’t follow their snake oil advice. It is dangerous for people without the education and knowledge to advertise such things to a base of people who trust them. The American medical system is fractured as well from both a patient and care giver perspective due to the pharmaceutical industry but there are more practitioners that care than those who don’t. People just need to be careful who they take advice from if they don’t have the degree and knowledge to educate and treat patients safely.

@@krachael.00 Oh no! I think I was not being clear about Flint in my comment. Sorry, I was referring to Tati's video when she answers "What kind of water do you use?" as if it is just an assumption that people are able to access tons of varieties of high end bottled waters (Tati mentions Fiji water bc that is the brand her husband uses, or Evian, or whatever, not tap verses bottled water) or high end filtered waters. It's odd to me that people actually have a favorite brand of bottled water because many of us are lucky if we can afford a decent filter or to pay for any bottled water, much less a preferred brand. So - my point regarding Flint, MI is that once the truth of the lead in the water became widely known it was a struggle to even get bottled water and it had to be shipped in and donated and such. To act like it is just so easy and convenient to have the "best" water sounded ignorant and haughty to me. But I just want to say from a social worker's perspective (I have my Masters in Social Work), I really love how you are addressing how some of the things that Tati has been discussing are problematic without placing blame on her or calling her a bad person. So much of social work focuses on "calling people "'in'" instead of calling people out and having the subtext of insinuating that they're a bad person for being ignorant about the history of some things. Clicked right away. I have too many thoughts on this but I have to finish some work. Some small thoughts: - I understand her thoughts on fragrance - Other comments on Botox saying it’s poison (James vid from 10 days ago) was odd - Alleging the Dior air spray foundation has benzenes Also the reality is that every time you go out and take your car onto the highway, you probably breath in so many fumes in our modern society. A light spray of dry shampoo won’t kill you. Also, I totally agree how it’s hard when a person slams a product because everyone lives in a different environment, are different ages/ ethnicities/ races/ genders and have their own skincare/ makeup preferences and needs. Can you perhaps do a video of former housewife Bethenny Frankel’s stint on beauty TikTok slamming certain pharmacy and celebrity make up brands? Kind of goes with my comment above.

I thought she said she was getting rid of her Dior air flash because it’s been discontinued and the ones she had were old and expired. She mentioned there’s always potential of benzene contamination in any aerosol product and she just doesn’t want to take the risk.

I don't know what these people have been saying about botox, but botox is literally poison, a neurotoxin produced by bacteria. Which to me just makes their obsession with poison is all the more ridiculous because all things can be poison and not poison depending on the situation.

I've been waiting for you to address this since I started watching Tati again because you kept talking about her, I got in just in time to watch this madness unfold. I wonder if her long hiatus and loss of influence in the beauty community will prevent this thinking from spreading like a virus through people who just like watching makeup videos. But it's wild that the wellness to alt-right pipeline is now morphing into the wearing makeup to wellness to alt-right pipeline. Do we blame Sephora??? Also I love this makeup meets commentary format. I know it's probably scary to put something like this online but I love hearing your opinion and would love to see more like this!

So I’m the only one in the comments who didn’t see an issue with her video? She used “I” and “me” how does one find her speaking HER truth problematic. She’s telling ppl what SHE has done to help herself and frankly she wasn’t lying about making better choices, it’s the truth. People can’t blame her because everyone is hyper sensitive because of their own issues and rights. “Privileged” or not, no one knows her full story. This is crazy. She might help someone speaking her truth, life is trial and error. What’s the difference from this video vs. what Tati did. OaN. You have a beautiful smile and it was very relaxing watching you do your makeup.

I just have so much to say about this honestly don’t know where to start. So I’ll go with I agree with you 100% I first found you in Clean Routine 2019 and followed almost the same path of realisation that you did, I find it so hard to watch any of my old favourite creators because all the clean language starts to slip in and I just can’t handle it. I stopped watching Tati a while ago and after this I’m glad I did. I have suffered from binge eating and orthorexia for such a long time and even discussions around clean beauty can trigger me. I went down the rabbit hole of wellness and funnily enough the pandemic is what woke me up. I had to trust the doctors or else it was just too awful, I don’t even know if everything about the wellness journey or information is wrong and I still have adjusted my diet greatly because it helps with my binge eating. There is such obsession with been your ‘optimal self’ that people can’t see the damage they do whilst striving for it. This is certainly not a take down just someone expressing their concern for a message been put out there. As always, love the video ❤❤

I'm so glad for this video Kackie! When I was in my early twenties (10 YEARS ago already 😭 lol) I got introduced to the health nut world/journey (gluten free, dairy free, raw meats and foods, clean bodycare, etc etc etc it never ends) that was brewing underneath the surface before it exploded and was mainstream and "cool" to care about what goes into your body. I so wish I had been exposed to more ideas at that time because I jumped head in and ended up causing myself so much anxiety and depression because I was so strict and calculated with what I put into my body or onto my body that it started doing more harm than good specifically in the mental department lol. I still am very conscious of making what I would consider good decisions for myself but I don't try to be "perfect" anymore. Not so I try to tell people what is right for them. I will definitely get into a health nut discussion if asked but, there is always caveats to the conversation. Anytime I come across a very extreme way of thinking now I always remember to take everything with a grain of salt and try and look at both ends of the spectrum. Granted I still have a bone to pick with Monsanto too :-)

You are soooo smart, Kackie! I genuinely mean that. It is really clear that you have really great critical thinking skills. One thing about Tati is that she is now demonizing many products that she stood behind for years! I recently gave in and bought a brush cleaner that she loved for years, but now will no longer buy. And something about that feels twisted.

This is such an important conversation, especially at this moment in history. If you or anyone else who sees this wants to look more into the history of the wellness culture, I highly recommend reading about Dr. Kellogg (lol yes that Kellogg) and his wellness movement which included his eugenics beliefs and also some evangelical extremism. It’s important right now because society has decided to ignore an ongoing pandemic and the mass death and disablement it’s causing so people will be looking for anything under the sun to treat their long covid which means more people than ever will be vulnerable to this “wellness” messaging. Tati is a smart business woman and I worry she sees this and is taking advantage of it to rake in as much money as possible regardless of whether or not she’s aware of where that pipeline leads. Disability advocates have been warning of this rise in “wellness”, Imani Barbarin is a great person to look to for a disabled perspective, she was featured in a video with The Financial Diet called Disability, Money, and the Dangers of “Wellness” Culture. Thank you for getting this conversation out there in the beauty community. As an immunocompromised person watching all of this from a distance, I was hoping someone would speak up about it.

My heart breaks for Tati because I know exactly where all this is coming from. She’s been trying to get pregnant for a long time. I can relate because I was infertile for 8 long years with unexplained infertility. I was where she is now. They can’t tell you why you’re not getting pregnant. It can make you absolutely insane if you let it and I did. I was on google every day trying to figure out why I couldn’t get pregnant. My body was betraying me and I felt like a failure of a woman (my shit, I know) I had no control and no answers and was dealing with the fact that as the years went by it was looking less and less likely that I was ever going to get pregnant. I started looking in the most bizarre places to find ways to “fix” myself. Diets, herbs, teas, meditation, acupuncture, I even bought a fertility oil off of Etsy. I was in so much turmoil that I became borderline obsessed. I did eventually get pregnant after my fertility doctor told me we’d need at egg donor. I was 42 and I have no idea how or why I got pregnant but my daughter is 4 now. I think Tati is getting a lot of this from a book called “It Starts With The Egg”. It tells you that you need to eliminate all these “toxins” from all these places from your deodorant to your Tupperware. I think she is lost in a haze and in a lot of pain right now. Infertility isn’t something I’d wish on my worst enemy. I’m giving her a pass with this stuff because I just know it my heart where it’s coming from and it’s so, so, so hard. I think she is being so assertive about it because she so badly wants to believe what she’s saying and desperately wants it to be the answer to her prayers. I think if Tati got pregnant you would see her completely change track. I’m not saying this isn’t problematic but if she’s anything like I was, infertility has likely become her whole personality. It truly can consume you.

Thanks for saying this. I agree infertility is very painful for her and she may be overcompensating while trying to solve this painful problem. Personally, I didn't think much of her video because I just didn't agree with some things and moved on to Best of Makeup 2022 😅 Most of her audience is older, I feel, and can just take her advice with a grain of salt and move on if it doesn't jive with them. You can't please everyone. I still very much enjoy her makeup reviews and her calming voice. 😊

I love Maintenance Phase! I haven't watched Tati in a while and I didn't know she'd gone so far down this concerning "wellness" pipeline. I think getting into selling vitamins was probably a signal she was going to go this way eventually, but wow. The thing about the whole "removing all veggies" thing is it does have a small basis in some bowel conditions - IBS, Crones, etc. But it's not all veggies, just certain ones, usually cruciferous ones because if your bowels are having a hard time, those are harder to digest (especially if they're raw). Which is tragic for me because those are my faves and I have to very, very careful with my serving sizes or I will regret it for a better part of a day 😭

omg the weakness talk. yes!!! people who judge others for not eating all organic or whatever need to stfu and acknowledge their privilege. things as simple as having easy access to fresh produce …. not everyone has the resources, tati. ALSO- don’t judge others. if you really care about peoples health there are better directions in which to direct your focus. the prevalence of food deserts in this country, for example. or the INSANE costs and complexities of the healthcare industry. on a very basic level: the fact that there are people even CHILDREN literally starving because people don’t want their taxes to go towards “government handouts” for the poor. i’m getting heated and my arguments aren’t even cohesive and i doubt anyone who needs to hear these things is ever going to read them but. damn.

Also, I just finished this video fully. It’s fully all my thoughts. This was amazing. I am going to rewatch it again for dinner. Like I remember back in the day, when I was a teen, Michelle Phan was promoting diy face masks with lemon juice and baking soda or like aspirin. Obviously, lots of young teens would watch that and damage their faces and feel worse about their acne. What Tati is doing I believe is even more dangerous cause a lot of her viewers are adults now who may be struggling in their own way so they could try to follow Tati in her ways without having any spousal/ family support or the financial means to do so leading to worse results.

I just feel like we have all seen the terrible mental/social etc experiences that Tati has gone through and while I have first hand experience in being told that my physical symptoms are all in my head and I don't want to say that's what she's doing I don't think we can discount the degree to which getting out of the LA atmosphere is a part of why she's feeling so much better & adding to the results that she's seeing. This is exacerbated to me by the way that she talks in what you called "weakness language". I don't think that she is trying to be hurtful to others, I think she's really bought into these ideas because I can hear almost a sense of hate for her own past self who wasn't doing those things/working hard enough etc. I hope she has people in her life (and that the people watching this content have people in their lives) who remind her that she is valuable even with unoptimized health, and that being sick isn't a moral failing or a character weakness
