Listen to it again after you discover it’s about the man who signed her as a 15 year old to his record company…. Then sold her entire life’s work to her #1 enemy in the music industry. Stolen lullabies = her discography.

Yes that is Jack Antonoff! He and Taylor are close friends and he’s one of her producers! The song is mainly understood to be about Scott Borchetta from Big Machine Records who sold Taylor’s masters to Scooter Braun.

I love the way she writes these very personal songs in a way that everybody can apply them to their own situation, but still have some phrases in there, that make you able to figure out what the song is about to her personally. Like the "stolen lullabies", refering to her sold masters. Brilliant song writing.

Taylor is such a masterful lyricist and I really love the Long Pond Sessions. I prefer the singer-songwriter vibes over the big stage performances, though those definitely have their place too. I've found that it helps to have her lyrics up on another screen and even read posts about what or who a song is about before listening. Her wording is often coded and she never outright names people, but it's not hard to figure out because Swifties are expert decoders. The best thing is that even though her songs are frequently deeply personal, many people can relate to the feelings that they invoke.

For a little more context, Scott met Taylor at 14 years old & signed her even though he didn't technically have his own record label yet, so she was his first artist & is technically the most successful Indie artist in the world! She signed a 13-year 6 album deal with Scott & his label. Halfway through her contract, they started having a lot of arguments about the direction that she wanted her music to go & for a very long time she wanted to buy her master recordings. But essentially her catalog, when it was sold, made up about 80% of the net worth of Big Machine Record label (which is why she is rerecording her first 6 albums). She looked at Scott as a second father & as family & when her contract was ending after Reputation in 2018ish she chose to leave because she knew he was going to sell the label and her future. He wouldn't let her buy her own masters because then he wouldn't get as much money for the label. Scott knew for a very long time that Taylor really really despised Scooter Braun- mostly because he was Kanye West's manager who participated in bullying tactics with Justin Bieber and Kanye against her. Scott tried to get Taylor to re-sign with his label when her contract was up & told her that if she signed a new 10-year deal she would be allowed to buy back one of her Masters for every new album that she turned into the label, so she would never have fully owned her Masters. She basically said "Fuck that!" The label was sold to Scooter Braun, who along with Scott had preemptively started putting out messages about her being unhinged & lying & bad mouthing her which backfired in both of them. That's what this song is about, Scott & his betrayal (Mad Woman is kind of about Scott, Scooter & Kanye). Anywho, that's just the general idea of where the song comes from & some of the things that she's been dealing with over the years! Thanks for the reaction😊

Taylor was Big Machine Records’ first artist and the label was built on her work. Scott Borchetta owed his success to her. And when he wouldn’t negotiate with her for her first six albums and then sold them to an investment firm, she felt deeply betrayed, and there was a lot of back and forth. It was losing a familial relationship she had had since she was 15. The guy from Bleachers is Jack Antonoff, he has been a primary producer on her last several albums and they are very close!

I suggest continuing to listen to all of the folklore/Long Pond you can find, but also keep in mind that you have not heard much of her range in terms of styles and genres (at least as far as I can tell from your TSwift playlist...how many of her songs do you already know? I'm guessing just her pop hits.) Once you've explored folklore, you can either continue down a similar path with evermore ("sister album"), or you can go off in some wildly different directions with Reputation and Midnights. And then, of course, there are the classic country eras, and the straight-up pop eras (you've sampled some 1989 and Lover, but not much). It's hard to tell where you fit in the swiftie spectrum until you have more exposure to the range of her talents. At some point, for sheer LOLs, you absolutely must see her SNL monologue: Seth Meyers Gives Props to Taylor Swift for Writing Her “SNL” Monologue kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5aTg6WbaJqrpqs Taylor Swift Monologue Song - SNL kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWPXqJaJe76fqpI

Jack Antonoff 's band is Bleachers (no "the"); he used to be part of the supergroup "fun". He started out as a drummer, and added guitars, keyboards, and lots of very old synths (he's done some background filming in his personal studio with Swift ). He became acquainted with Swift through his then girlfriend, Lena Dunham. In 2013 he cowrote Sweeter than Fiction with Swift for the film, "One Chance." He also worked on some songs for all her albums after 2013.

Its cool to notice some difference between the original record and the Long Pond sessions. For example, the low note she sings the last verses of the bridge, in the original she sings it very higher. There's something about the production of the studio version that makes it just a little bit better imo. I think it's the voices in the background that make it have a very funeral-like vibe. Her performance of it at the Eras Tour is unbelievable though - and a lot closer to the album production.

I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned the lyrics themselves, I know they’ve mentioned who it’s about. The lyrics are callbacks to the stolen albums themselves. She had six stolen albums. “I didn’t have it in my self to go with grace” - State of Grace from Red Album “And you’re the hero flying around saving face” is from Superman on her Speak Now Album. “And if I’m dead to you why are you at the wake?” Is from Look What You Made Me Do from reputation. “Cursing my name” - Always and Forever from Fearless “Wishing I’ll Stay” - I wish you would/All you had to do was stay from 1989 “Look at how my tears ricochet” from Teardrops on my Guitar from Taylor Swift (Debut Album) Last but not least: when she says “you wear the same jewels that I gave you as you buried me” references the fact that the six albums she had went platinum, silver and gold!
