One of my absolute favorite lyrics of Taylor’s is in this song “I didn’t have it in myself to go with grace, cause I’d fight you used to tell me I was brave.” This refers to how Taylor had to fight her label many times in her career to make creative choices she wants, most famously when she wanted to switch genres from country to pop from the albums red to 1989. Her label, especially Scott the person this song is about wanted her to remain in country, but she wanted to stretch her creative legs and prove she could make pop music that was basic or generic. It also shows another level of bravery as Taylor called herself a perpetual people pleaser and for a people pleaser to stand up for what they truly want and believe in is incredibly out of the ordinary and brave. As a people pleaser myself I understand the feeling of standing up for yourself after years of allowing people to steamroll you and being villainized for it. That’s exactly hat happened in this situation with her master recordings. She chose to publicly stand up for herself making a statement and she was deemed the villain in the story for doing so. So she wrote this song to her old label head as well as the songs mad woman, vigilante shit, and karma for the man who bought her old master recordings scooter Braun.
@elizabeth598511 ай бұрын
This song is about the owner of her record label, not her manager: Scott Borchetta of Big Machine Records. She was with him since she was 14. He owned the master recordings of her six albums, so basically she couldn't use her own music without his permission. She asked to buy the master recordings (she has the money). He said NO, but for every NEW album you make for me, I'll let you buy ONE old master recording. She said "I'm leaving, I'm sorry," and went to Republic Records. He then SOLD HER MASTER RECORDINGS to her enemy, Scooter Braun, who had bullied her along with some of his clients, for $300 million dollars. Scott Borchetta knew Scotter Braun was evil to her and he still sold him her masters instead of just selling them to her!! She has the freaking money!!! So she decided to re-record her first six albums so she would OWN HER MUSIC. Yes, she was saying to him: everything you have is because of me, and you're burying me, you got that right!

Actually Taylor did not have the money to buy them at the time. This is only proven again later on when Scooter Braun sold it to Disney for 405 million dollars in 2020. In 2020 Taylor swift did not even have 400 million dollars in the bank…… After all it’s business. Business is about money. And in fact there are very few artists that own their own masters…… so let’s not pretend like Taylor got robbed or something. She didn’t own them in the first place and she never did nor was she destined to own them.
@zingaash126611 ай бұрын
1. Actually From her 2006 self-titled debut to 2017’s “Reputation” - was believed to be worth some $140 million at the time. The complete price tag for the acquisition encompassed all aspects of BMLG’s business, including its client roster, distribution deals, publishing and owned artist masters. Swift's masters were only a portion of that sale. Swift was worth $280 million in 2017. She had the money to buy her master's at the time, they would not entertain the idea....unless. She could buy back each album, by making them a new album, effectively tying her back to their label. 2. Her team had initially attempted to negotiate with Braun in 2020. "Scooter's team wanted me to sign an ironclad NDA stating I would never say another word about Scooter Braun unless it was positive, before we could even look at the financial records of BMLG. So, I would have to sign a document that would silence me forever before I could even have a chance to bid on my own work. My legal team said that this is is absolutely NOT normal, but they've never seen an NDA like this presented unless it was to silence an assault accuser by paying them off. He would never even quote my team a price. These master recordings were not for sale to me." 3. I don't think anyone is pretending robbery. Extortion, a bit of blackmail, some manipulation, strong arming and the buyer at one point using harassment and scare tactics early on in her career. Now those things, tend to rile people up, and with good reason. 4, she's re-recording those albums, which will mitigate the ownership and use of them to anyone else but her. Apparently, she is destined to own them.
@craigmoon212111 ай бұрын
The lyrics are up for interpretation, it's a storytelling album. But that's the most common interpretation. EDIT: Personally, I like it better just as a story of a lady that was killed by her husband so she haunts him.

Honestly haven’t seen another male reactor get Taylor’s situation so immediately and with such empathy. The way you validate that songwriters write from lived experience and people acting shitty because she’s talking about the times she was heartbroken. People saying that nonsense about male writers and artists? Not nearly!

You definitely hit it. She was literally the first client Scott B signed when he started his label. He had nothing before her, acted like he was so invested in what was good for her. Signed her to an unheard of 13 year contract when she was only 15 and her parents didn’t understand the business. At the end of her contract he sold all of her masters to a really shady guy who’d tried to ruin T’s career. It was a whole, miserable thing.
@oliviagracemiller17869 ай бұрын
Yes this and not to mention she had begged for him to not do any kind of business dealing with her music to him for a long time and when the time comes she wanted to buy the masters herself and for him to let her know but he never did

I took it as her referring to the numerous Gold, Platinum, 2x Platinum, and Diamond records she’s responsible for achieving for Scott’s record company. Like her records are probably still hanging on the walls at Scott’s company, and he’s using them to get more clients, even though she’s gone.
