I remember when my ex and I broke up, I had this tug-of-war going on inside. Half of me felt like she was the only person I could ever be with, and half of me knew I just couldn’t stay in the relationship. I really wanted to bake that type of tension into this song - where you’re half trying to convince yourself you’re moving on from someone, and along the way - by how acute your desire to move on is - you’re admitting how much you care about them. So this is a love song, I’d say, even if it’s a sad one. It’s for when you’ve got feelings and nowhere to put them. When I sing, “ - and no this ain’t love,” the subtext while performing that was really, “ - this is love, but I wish it wasn’t because it hurts too much.” The song wobbles between love and denial; it starts with me singing “this is a sad sad song” but ends with a celebration. To me, the whole thing represents romantic conflict - the highs and the lows and the doubts and the whole private drama that can ebb in flow inside you as you discover someone who you thought could be - but isn’t. I really love this one. I think it hits a very specific nail on the head. Huge thank you to everyone I’ve met and loved and lost or who I never had the chance to love at all; I wouldn’t have written it without you.

There’s something so raw and vulnerable in every song you release. It’s a very personal experience you’re sharing with us, and yet it’s relatable in a way that makes me wanna weep. It makes me think about some of my favorite poets Andrea Gibson and their partner Megan Falley. They wrote this book together called “How Poetry Can Change Your Heart” In it there’s this chapter surrounding the Magic of Language. In it Andrea and Megan mention The Great Paradox; a writing rule that states the more specific something is the more universal it becomes. Later in the section there’s a quote from a poet named Kai Coggin talking about must-have tools for writers where he advocated for “An open heart. A keen eye for observation that notices tiny nuances others would ignore. Courage.” Finding your music was such a blessing to me. Whenever I’m in need of a good cry, whenever I need to grieve, when there’s a moment where I need to hug myself, when I need a reminder that I’m capable in the face of something terrifying, when I know I need to take responsibility or autonomy back, there’s always the perfect song waiting for me in your discography. Thanks for sharing and giving me a metaphorical place I can feel at home. To me home isn’t a physical place, but the place you feel most supported and loved. The place you feel most like yourself. I find that in your music. This song in particular hits a real achey spot for me. Better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all right? 💀🤘🏻2:02
