I think there is a cool parallel between Kaido/Big Mom and Zoro/Sanji. Between both pairs being members of some of the greatest pirate crews ever, their shared friendly rivalries that dissipates when they have to fight together, Kaido and Zoro's principles of strength and heavy drinking, Sanji and Big Mom having parents that used them for their own gain and later making their own families, and Whole Cake being Sanji and Big Moms arc while Wano focuses on Kaido and Zoro.

I’ve never gotten the Kaido hate. Was he used to his full potential? Nah. He coulda been done better. But Wano, as an arc, has a *lot* of shit going on in it. The arc is long for a reason - And even at its length, it’s still pretty dense. Some stuff was *bound* to slip through the cracks.

I'm really excited to watch this video as soon as I find time. Aleczandxr made an absolutely incredible video about Kaido (must watch for every OP fan) which did him justice & perfectly put into words why he's easily one of the best written characters in OP in general. I smell another good one from you! For some reason people think that character has to have a big tragic backstory to be well written, which is absolutely ridiculous. First-off, Kaido is already tragic without backstory. Second, look at Crocodile. No backstory yet he's beloved by many. Kaido is deep and nuanced. Most of his character is explored through subtext. He's way better than most people think. Also, Kaido's dynamic with Luffy is one of the best in the whole series. Though I'll have to disagree with you about Kaido's backstory. It's perfect for him because I think he honestly didn't even need one.

One aspect I always loved is how Kaido seems to aspire towards a glorious and romantic death like the people he admires(Whitebeard, Roger, Oden) without fully understanding them. They all had meaningful deaths that impacted the world, and I think for better or worse Kaido wanted that for himself. He sought to change the world by causing a massive war and cementing his name in history, to superficially mimic his idols. He seeks the perfect ending for it's own sake. Meanwhile, Luffy is the opposite. Luffy lives his life doing what he wants and doing it to the fullest, just like all those great men before him. For Luffy it's not about reaching some perfect ending, it's about the journey to get there. Luffy embodies what these great people stood for in life, while Kaido tries to superficially mimic their iconic deaths.

When I was a child, I didn't see good food or peace, only war and violence everywhere. People were killing each other for a single penny and a little food. He was an alcoholic and weak, always gambling. Did he ever beat you? No, it was the opposite; I was the one who was strong. I always believed that to eliminate weakness, you have to eradicate it, and only the strong should remain. That’s what I always loved about Roger and Xebec. Roger faced hardship without bowing down; he smiled through it all. The same goes for Xebec and Whitebeard, who climbed to become the strongest man shame to protect the weak.

I enjoyed Kaido when I read weekly but he was never my favourte and I never fully appreciated the detailed subtext (the rushed ending of Wano really didn't endear me to reread all of Wano again). That is until I saw Joy Boy Theories video of Kaido where he made 1 simple comparison that jsut made Kaidos character click for me. *He compared Kaido to Fisher Tiger* Fisher Tiger is someone who couldn't let his hatred go but he also didn't want to be consumed by it so he chose option 3; He chose to die. But what if he couldn't die? Then you get Kaido. We see Kid Kaido as a part of the *Human* kingdoms army. That shows he at least wants to have relationships with humans but then he got sold and betrayed by his King and he comes to the conclusion/tells Yamato that humans won't be friends with Oni; Not cause Kaido won't allow it but cause the humans won't. After Rocks D. Xebec we see with his meeting with King that he, with his extraordinary physical steenth, wants to be someone who can change and liberate the world (Joyboy). But somehow, somewhere between meeting king and meeting Oden, he figures out that he's not the one and for all his extraordinary physical strength he's spiritually weak and he gives up. *But he can't die.* And so he live with Rage. Rage at how he can't live how he wants. (The interruptions of the fights with Oden and Luffy) Rage at how he can't die how he wants. Rage at the fact that he's too weak to change the world. Rage at the fact that he is not Joyboy.

Honestly there is another layer that people dont discuss enough. Kaido is depressed. Not just because he didnt have anybody to fight, but because, in his words, "one by one, i defeated every opponent that stood in my way, and at some point i was considered the strongest. But what do i see from this height?" Even in his backward, might makes right philosophy he could see that the world was terrible, with the celestial dragons on top and nobody he could truly trust besides maybe King, who was pretty much just a sycophant. He has grown old and wise enough ti realize the world is broken, but cant begin to fathom a way to make it better. But theres his reaction to what he considers "proper deaths". The ones the likes of Roger, Whitebeard and Oden had, and felt awe and respect for them even if he couldnt quite explain why. He sees those deaths and envies them. He wants somebody, somewhere to tell his story someday. Then theres his view on Joyboy. Someone who could bring the whole world into a party rather than a war, and he realized... he could never be that. He didnt even try to dream. Almost all of his dialogue is him statung cold hard facts and logic of "this world is cruel" "people will hate people like us no matter what", and he just accepts that as fact, literaply trying to beat that lesson into his son time and again. Ultimately theres his decision when it came to joyboy. If such a being did exist, they would at least need to be capable of defeating him if they were truly going to spread salvation around the world. And he just decided to still be a tyrant and warmonger until the end of his days, just hoping somebody better, with real legitimate hope and life in them could defeat him. He always wanted to lose in a straight up slugging match. Thats why he was heartbroken to have cheapshotted oden and for cp0 to interfere. He wanted luffy with all hid idealism to actually pan out. Thats why he kept asking those probing questions like "what kind of world will you create?"

The expectations on him were so high and understandably so given what the small stuff we got and the total build up. For me he was interesting and a fun villain on his way to becoming my second fave villain BUT during the Onigashima chapters (after 1011/1012) I started to get bored of him. King, Jack, Ulti, Who’s Who - all of them felt more interesting and had me engaged in the arc more than Kaido. Till this day I don’t know exactly why but I just felt bored most of the time with him. Even Big Mom felt interesting for me and I hated her during Wano (deserved better). His backstory wasn’t important to me, I don’t have any problem with that flashback we got - I never needed it tbh. He just didn’t have the grip on me like Doflamingo, Katakuri, Lucci, Croc, and even Moria had and that grip lasted all the way throughout the arc and they still have that on me. It’s a shame but I’m looking forward and patiently waiting for Blackbeard. There’re already so many parallel between him and Luffy and there’s so much there to uncover.

I think if you dislike Kaido for having a trait of being strong then you should probably dislike other characters that are loved, an example being Kenpachi Zaraki, he's very loved despite his character just being strong and loving fights, which is something he has in common with kaido, also a "boring" backstory, Kenpachi's backstory was just being strong enough to rival the current kenpachi

I was always a big fan of kaido because hes never contradicting his beliefs of might makes right, he'll accept anyone as long as they're strong and we see this especially in yamato. He never had an issue with yamato being openly transgender (unlike the community) kaido and his whole crew use he/him pronouns when talking to yamato. Kaidos true issue with yamato is the fact he seen himself as having odens will, which in kaido's eyes wont work since oden lost to him before
