This took extra long because I wanted to give myself a chance to really get a feel for the switch over a longer period of time. I think I can pretty confidently say that this isn't for me, and I go into why

3:18 your analogy actually perfectly illustrated why I WANT these switches. I DON'T want a "speed bump", it just feels, to me, like linear with an "annoying obstruction". Rather, what I want is that upon reaching actuation, the key just bottom-out by itself, leaving no possibility for a state between actuation and bottoming-out

Had a discussion with my oldest sister, she would prefer tactility over noise. She learned to type on actual typewriters, and would be interested in a mechanical keyboard that’s more tactile: this may be exactly what she wants, a key switch that is unabashedly tactile!
@GauisHelenaMohaim
@GauisHelenaMohaim 2 жыл бұрын
Strict NonConformist It seems your sister is about my age as i learned typing on mechanical and electrical typewriters. My first serious keyboard was the IBM model M. And just like her, my goal when building a custom keyboard was to emulate the tactility and feel of the model M and the old typewriters that came before it. I have tested several strong tactile switches and i came to the conclusion that the sharp feel and instant drop in the force curve upon activation that old keyboards have can only be found in clicky switches with a clickbar like the Kailh box pink, green and navy blue. I eventualy settled the pink ones as they do feel the most like the buckling spring switches of the model M. If she can tolllerate the sound of clicky switches, she should try the clickbars imho

@@GauisHelenaMohaim I put Kailh Box White on my Ergodox EZ Glow, having not experienced the others from testing. Very distinctly clicky/noisy, could certainly be more tactile, but not devoid of tactility. Of course, should I start back working in the office and take a keyboard in, I’d have death-stares at a minimum i I used those switches, as they are NOT quiet! 🤣🤣🤣 So, I bought a set of Kailh Box Linear Pink (silent) that I’ve not tested in the keyboard yet. Considering all the keyboards I’ve used with most being squishy membranes, I expect I can do well with any of them, and I’ve not measured what I’m fastest on. I’ve toyed with the idea of buying another Ergodox EZ Glow so I have one for work, one for home, and having different switches, and playing with people’s minds by silently switching between the louder and the quieter ones to drive them batty. Of course, I do have regular phone/conference calls where I need to type.

You articulated the articulation well and specified how it affects your experience, this helped form a decision for me. I think the paper on the sock or bubblewrap both gave perfect representations of a keypress experience and helped me consider what kind of key feel I like without having to listen to a dozen keypress videos and just wonder whether I want more or less thoc. Reminds me of shopping for a pen and paper by aiming for a specific scratchiness instead of focusing on what part of that physical feedback lends to the experience you want. This was well presented and informative. Thank you.

This review is spot on and mirrors my sentiment on these switches. They just feel too jagged and are too distracting. Furthermore, they helped me understand what I actually wanted out of tactile switches. I greatly prefer a swell in the keystroke like a cherry implementation (zealios 67g are kings of that space), and not the sharp feeling that all BOX switches seem to share (I think they are implemented this way because due to the reduced travel in the switch over a cherry design, they can't really place that bump further down and make it work). I love the hako violet springs, but they share the same sharp tactility (to a lesser degree of course) of the other BOX designs that really contribute to an interruption in my typing flow. I even prefer BOX pale blue over navy's due to the same affect.

The BOX Royals feel more similar to the Jades than to the Zealios. They do not feel more tactile than the Jades, and they are more crisp than Zealios when the force drops. They are the closest quiet alternative to the Jades, although not as satisfying to press. If you are fine typing on Jades, these are worth a try.

You seem to be basing some of this review on the assumption that typing a word on these switches objectively doesn't feel like a fluid experience, and hitting each key objectively feels like its own ordeal, meaning that the people who likes these switches must value extreme tactility at the cost of a cohesive experience. Has it occurred to you (and I actually mean that as a sincere question for you to consider, not a snarky rhetorical question) that some of the people who like these sorts of switches might actually like them because they *do* find them fluid and smooth to type on? For me, typing a word on an ultra-tactile keyboard feels both fluid and powerful, like dropping a handful of dice in a tabletop game. Which switches make for a smooth and cohesive experience is ultimately as subjective as which switches feel "right" to type on. For me, linear or mildly tactile switches don't feel fluid at all, because the lack of tactile feedback makes me feel like I haven't properly hit the key, so I'm constantly feeling like I'm making typos; it just depends on the person, so I kind of feel like you're stating your opinion as fact here. Other than that, this was a very good review, and it helped me decide to order a sample of these switches as I decide which ones I want for my first DIY keyboard!

I haven't gotten a chance to try out the production version of the box royals, but i did receive a sample of it when Mike was sending out samples and i agree with a lot of what you say. at first i was really impressed but also somewhat disappointed, the "blast through a wall" feel of it really didnt feel that great.. i was hoping for a more rounded bump than a sharp fall and i LOVED you analogy of driving over a speed bump it's actually really accurate! I haven't tried a lot of switches in my life, but eveer since i tried the hako clears i fell in love with them and use them as my daily driver, they feel extremely solid and reliable, i love the gradual increase of resistance to a whopping 90g for bottoming out... makes the travel waaay smoother and really helps not slam my fingers down. now im like really torn on what other switches to get to use for my other keyboard, i wanna try new switches but i love the hako clears so much i dont even wanna use something else lol :D

Have you tried the hako royals now? soon after the box royal, Mike released the hako royal premade instead of having to make them yourself. i was waiting so anxiously for the royal hoping it would be the holy grail of tactile but i was very disapointed, i agree with you about like hitting a speed bump, when i tried the hako royals however i absolutely fell in love, they have been my daily drivers for over a year now with no fail, they are the best tactile feeling switches i ever tried (i never tried holy pandas because they are hard to come by and expensive ). I bought an hhkb today because ive been in love with the topre bump and sound when i first got into the hobby and tried them at a meetup, but after using hako royals for such a long time now that i have the hhkb i was somewhat disapointed since it's not as snappy as the hako royals for me, but other than that i love the hhkb and the sound is just beautiful.

older vid I know but for anyone interested after the break in period the bump becomes a lot more pleasant. I'm not sure if I'm just used to them now but comparing the feel a month in to when they where new the difference is noticeable, its still extremely tactile but the harshness has calmed down, am assuming its due to the plastics rounding off a bit. At the beginning I'd notice tingling in my fingers after excessive typing from the bottoming out, but I guess with them easing up and becoming familiar I don't use excessive force anymore so the bottom outs for me are much less severe. Definitely my fave switch. :)

These are the only tactile switch that I think lives up to the hype, but everyone else seems to feel differently. I thought Zealios sound nice and are really smooth, but they are barely tactile to me. I do agree that Royals feel a bit like rubber dome though (I've never tried Topre, so I can compare to that). Mine are in a plastic case keyboard though, which I think may soften the feeling. I'm curious how they would feel in a really rigid aluminum keyboard. I'm using SA keycaps, which "take the edge off" of extreme weight and tactility in my opinion. Maybe try some different profile keycaps and see if your opinion changes at all.

Jades feel similar to Cherry MX Blues, but they have a stronger upstroke than the Blues, which makes them much better for games since it doesn’t feel like the key sticks on the way up. The BOX Royals have a tactility similar to Jades and Blues, although not quite as crisp. The Royals also do not build up pressure as much as the Blues or Jades since the bump is so high. Browns will be much less tactile. They are basically linear switches with a little bump that feels more like a rumble or vibration than what you are used to. It is just enough for you to know that the key actuated. Zealios that he recommended in this video are more tactile than Browns, but they are nowhere near Royals or Blues.

Damn good switch review, definitely subbing! Although I have to disagree with your opinion of the Royals. I do agree that they are getting close to being distractingly tactile, but personally I do not think they cross the line. Of course I am a very heavy handed typist with a strong preference towards switches over 70g, which is why I think the Royals work well for me. The spring weighting on the Royals is not as high as I usually prefer but, the extra resistance of the tactile event makes up for that to me. I agree they are a less fluid experience than typing on any other tactile MX switch, but that is not necessarily a bad thing IMO. If you have any experience with tactile ALPS they are a very similar typing experience. In fact I would say the Royals remind me of brown or orange ALPS the most. Your comparison of Royals to BKE redux domes is a fair one, but IMHO BKE redux domes have a less distracting tactile event so I feel the ALPS analogy is a closer one. As far as typing on Royals goes, I completely get how you could feel that the tactility is a distraction & how that slows your WPM down. For me though it does not affect my typing speed & I find the high tactility to be a pretty enjoyable typing experience. Again I really think that comes down to my personal typing style & switch preferences. Royals are definitely not for everybody & not anywhere close to the Zealio replacement a lot of us were hoping for. They are however a very unique switch I would encourage everyone to try, but the keyword is TRY. I would not recommend anyone to order a batch without trying them first because of how different the feel is compared to all other tactile MX switches.

More is always better to break at the top of the of the key press is how i know ive actually hit the key. I have running zelios v2 will 100gm spring the last few years. I am building a back up keyboard before backing out of the hobbie, and now I have to buy these just to see what Ive been missing. Also there arnt so many box tactiles.

The only alps I've tried is white, which more resembles kailh clickbar switches. I recently acquired a Model M, and the only thing similar about this and that is the stiffness. I think the royals are more tactile than buckling springs or white alps

I haven't tried Burnt Orange in a keyboard yet, but they're very different, primarily due to the tactile intensity. The Royals are much much more tactile. They both have their bump way up at the top though

I love hako violet for its subtle and smooth bump. I think people are confused about having more tactility equals to better switch and keeps on shitting any switch that does not have the tactility of driving over a mountain.
@Hellborecannon
@Hellborecannon 6 жыл бұрын
zong feresthe it's not that simple, we have two extremes here: on the one hand you have Royals which are probably TOO tactile for a lot of people... However, the tactility of Hakos is so slight that for most people it's not enough. I wish we could have a BOX switch that was somewhere between BOX browns (still not tactile enough for my taste) and Royals (too tactile). I think what they did with Royals feels like they just maxed out the tactility as much as the switch could support which is really only good for bragging rights of "most tactile", it's not really pleasant to type on.

I can't make any comparisons at this point since the only Alps switch I've tried is White, but I've seen people make parallels between them and Kailh Tactiles so I assume there is at least a little bit of similarity.

I have only tried Matias switches, so I cannot comment on all the different ALPS switches. BOX Jades are clicky and feel quite close to Matias clicks switches. BOX Royals feel more similar to them than any other tactile switch. They have a drop off in force after the bump that is similar, although not quite as crisp as the Jades. However, the BOX Royals drop off much higher in the stoke, so they do not feel like pressure builds up and, then, quickly releases; they just drop out. I find that less satisfying, but it isn’t objectively bad. They have a strong upstroke unlike other highly tactile switches like Cherry MX Clear or the clickly Cherry MX Blue.

Your description of the tactility is so dead-on! It sounds/feels a bit like I'm clicking a mouse button, but with much more travel. I've lubed and done the trampoline mod on mine, so you mainly just hear the click and minimal ping or bottoming out. I really like the box royals for one-shot layer/modifier keys. It makes it incredibly obvious I've hit a one-shot vs regular key, both with the tactile feel and the sound, so there's never a question if I've hit one of those keys. It really makes it feel as if I've engaged something when hitting the box royals, while remaining much quieter than the Kailh clicky switches. in comparing them with Kailh clicky switches, I notice that the audible click on the box royals is louder on the upstroke than the downstroke (cli-CLICK), while the clicky switches from Kailh are the opposite (CLICK-clock). I'm not sure why, but to my brain, that makes the box royals sound more natural when used as a toggle. I'd like to try a full keyboard of them, but I agree that while it would feel great, it'd probably be pretty tiring.

Going from blues to Boba u4t's then trying blues again, I know what he means by deliberate key presses and that each key is it's own switch. But having used blues for few months you can train yourself to type with that fluid motion. It takes more effort but it's possible. But with boba u4t's it's effortless and in the beginning it felt very light compared to blues. Mx blues are also more jarring. After a while it's not as satisfying to type on. And this is because you get introduced to more premium feeling switches. It's like you enjoying a rubber dome keyboard, then a mech board, than a custom mech board. You get so spoiled that you can't be satisfied with anything less premium.

I feel like the Glorious Pandas do not have enough tactility (its good but i want more ). I have Box Royals and Box Jades on the way for my birthday. The wait is killing me. Its only 2 weeks but it actually feels like an eternity. On the brightside I feel amazing everyday just waiting for the switches to arrive so idk.

Both just arrived. Literally yesterday. I'm heavy handed and aside from cherry and some outemu swtiches i've only tried Glorious Pandas. Which I did not find tactile enough Box Jades - Quite tactile though it feels to me like the tactiliy goes away as time goes on. I also can't put up with the sound for prolonged use. Box Royals - I've just found my new favourite switch. The rounder tactility feels better to me than the Jades. They're also way quieter than I expected they are even more quiet than glorious pandas for some reason. Though the click issue that the Box Royals are known for are starting to appear and I'm curious how bad it's going to get. For now Day 1 it's just a very slight click when I get really close to the keyboard. Aside from that it's quieter and more tactile than glorious pandas
