SILENT Clicky Switches?? Box Mute Jades Review and Sounds

I made this video to talk about the new Kailh Box Mute Jades that just dropped from Novelkeys! These things are super interesting, because they feature the same click bar mechanism as the Box Jades and Box Navies, except there is a muting mechanism inside the top housing that makes these switches much quieter than the other box clickies.
In this video, we go over the specs about these switches such as materials and spring weights, and I give my personal thoughts about typing with these. Most importantly is the SOUND TEST with these bad boys where we compare them to normal Box Jades and Kailh Sages!
This video was a lot of fun to make, so please comment if you have any questions or if you think there's something I can do better! If you have the chance to pick up these "silent" clicky switches, I definitely recommend it!

The silicon piece isn’t the only reason these switches are muted. The click bar is oriented differently than it is in jades/navys and doesn’t depress and snap back like the normal box clickies. This is actually the more significant change in terms of sound/loudness

You're totally right! This is something I noticed when i was messing around with the switches some more after the video already published, but unfortunately at that point it was too late to add it as a talking point because the video was already out. In addition to the orientation, the click bar is thinner too. I thought this was interesting given that they're marketed as a 'jade variation' but they use a different click bar internally.

I have these as well. I like them with a couple caveats: 1) I found a wider than normal variation in feel from switch to switch (even when ordered at the same time and from the same box). The tactility in a minority is more rounded/mushy. And in some the pre travel is shorter. This might be fixable if one opens them up and or film them. Also, it’s not just the silicon pad that is different. The click bar is bent at a different angel and the end is bent at 90 degrees to the non mute switch. For kicks I swapped a box pink lower half with the mute jade top and it was clickier, so the changes to the bar are important too. The tactility is not as sharp as the regular box clickies. Sometimes it almost feels gravelly. These have a nice trampoline like effect if you type lightly. I think they would benefit from an even higher bottom out force, however.

From the MOMENT (however many years ago it's been) I saw a video on the first box switches and how they set up the white click bars, I wanted to try experimenting with dampening the impact point to essentially extract the sound while keeping the tactility. Fast-forward to a year ago and I'm reminded of that idea when these switches come out. Not quite sure why they changed the design to work how it does, but the use of a dense silicone doesn't quite do as good of a job as some other more porous material would. I mean, I get that it would likely be unreasonable to use something like foam or felt from a manufacturing efficiency standpoint, but one of these years I'll be able to pick up some thick bars and finally put my idea to the test ♥️

Ayo, good review! I covered these just a couple hours before you. They are pretty comfortable to use (albeit a little heavy), and I agree that it’s good to see something new. However, I personally don’t see much resemblance between these and the Jades, I wonder if it was just my batch? The tactility between the two types of switches was pretty night and day, I found them rather underwhelming. The sound and feel reminded me of an early generation BOX Royal turned clicky.
@clackattackofficial

Thanks for watching! I think there's a decent similarity, but there's definitely a little bit less tactility on the muted jades. Overall I think it's a great starting point that they can take from here and refine a bit more in the future.

@@clackattackofficial yeh folks in my comments were saying they were rather disappointed that they didn’t go with Jade levels of tactility, since folks wanted the distinct feedback from the thick clicks without a super loud click. I don’t disagree to be honest, but I definitely was put off since it was marketed as a “mute Jade” so folks would automatically assume it’d be very like one

Just watched your video and it was MUCH more in depth than mine hahaha. You made a lot of great points in there, i think we were all hoping for something a tad bit different. I actually took the click bars out of the jades and the mute jades and saw that they're different click bars, which surprised me. I was under the impression it would all be the same other than the muting mechanism, but they used a different bar entirely. This isn't something I realized until today tbh

@keagan5379
@keagan5379 2 жыл бұрын
@@butre. alps switches cost as much as they do because they’re rare, not in production, and a collectible. Clickiez are none of those. They certainly seem amazing when compared to mx blues but when compared to alps it comes up well short. And yes I’m comparing them to alps because zeal and his fan girls are justifying the price by basically saying “well it comes close to alps and alps are expensive so that means these should be too”. They only cost as much as they do because zeal is a greedy asshole. His margins for these switches is probably insane, even with an extra part and different mold. I’ll still be picking them up because I love overly tactile switches but I’ll never recommend them to anyone else unless the price comes down.

Wow, that's pretty fantastic. I currently enjoy my Box Pinks, which aren't too loud for me. It feels like the muted switches trade off too much tactility for the sound. I wonder whether you can just mimic the sound dampening by using o-rings on regular Box Jades?

@butre.
@butre. 2 жыл бұрын
@@clackattackofficial it works well, but it does dampen the tactility somewhat. I have too many keyboards to play with to have run into significant longevity problems with it, but I'm sure it wouldn't take too long for the grease to migrate out of the right spots with heavier use. I'm using 205g2 on the little coil on the left side and the tiniest bit of drill rod grease on the loop on the right, if you ever want to try it out yourself. any real sticky and thick grease should do the job if you can't get your hands on an appropriately small amount of drill rod grease, it's just what I had available.

So the only dampening (silencing) part is where the clickbar strikes? If so, it is exactly what I was looking for, because I hate the mushiness of typical silent switche and love the tactile feel of the clickbar! If the stem itself isnt dumpened by any silicone, I'll surely pick them up
@clackattackofficial
@clackattackofficial 2 жыл бұрын
Correct. The only difference is the orientation of the click bar and the silicone part sticking out of the top housing to make the click sound much less harsh. The stem looks exactly like one you might find in a Box Jade or Navy, no dampening on it.
