My great-grandmother survived her first husband saving their children and then sacrificing himself by being struck by lightning. Then she remarried and had five more children. She took them swimming and one of them drowned. Then the following year her only daughter was stabbed to death by her husband, leaving her to take care of her three grandchildren under 5 yrs old. Her second husband passed away and then she remarried her third husband at 86 years old. He died two years later in bed next to her. She made it to 93 years old and I never saw her ever not smiling. She was the most peaceful happiest and most content person I've ever known in my whole life.

My heart went out to this poor girl the first time I saw her mom on camera; my sense was that Kailia didn’t get to be a child, she got to be an object of her mother’s narcissism. We see this over and over again with child stars. The blame can’t all be shouldered by the parents, however. The entertainment industry exploits children until they’re broken and then tosses them away like toilet paper when they cease being highly lucrative. None of us know exactly what this girl was going through, but she was clearly hurting and couldn’t find some way - or someone to hear her - to express herself. A lot of people contributed to letting this little life down, and until we figure out how and why I don’t have much hope for preventing future child suicides.

A quick search reveals that she died by suicide, which explains why her mother kept it cryptic when saying goodbye on social media. Choosing to hide such a painful truth may have spared appearances, but it raises questions about where the real focus was: on optics rather than addressing what truly mattered.

This 21st century obsession with trying to look perfect on social media and then counting "likes" and "subscribers" is making an entire generation lose sight of what is truly important in life.
