Nice review, price-wise, they should put it at the exact same price as the A7SIII, that way you can choose between photo-orientated camera or video orientated cineline. As you say, features are same, swapping EVF for a fan and some holes doesn't warrant extra money, it's the same money (I assume you have to pay extra for the mic input grip thing anyway). I think price-wise things have got silly these days. Computer equipment got cheaper after 2000 and it seems camera gear went so up in price that even camera phones could charge up to a grand and still be considered cheap. I could keep going... lol
@daltonkackerman3 жыл бұрын

I've been using the A7sii for 6 years by now, been very happy with it (still am) and while I do miss 10-bit, what the A7siii and the FX3 offer to me as a filmmaker don't justify the price at all. To be honest, with how things are going I think I'll actually accept a cropped image and buy the Blackmagic Pocket 6k Pro next. It offers so much more... the only real downside to me is the lacking image stabilisation, but then again: I can buy a DJI RS2 and still be under the price tag of a FX3/A7siii.

Commenting ages after but whatever haha I have an A7III and a gimbal and it's the biggest pain in the neck to use on adverts shooting or weddings. A very good ibis + rig cage is infinitely better to use

I think its a neat camera, but quite niche. I think if someone is getting their first video camera, this is perfect. But if your already in to it, well, its hard to say as you'd already know what you need or don't need and may find the odds are more likely this might not be the camera you need.

I think that (no cage) is perhaps the main point here. Not having a cage will help to keep it much lighter. I do wish they would have also included a simple loupe for the screen for outdoor shooting though. However, there are lots of monitor manufacturers who are now producing very bright screens at affordable prices and I think that perhaps Sony decided to keep the price down in view of that.

This was a weird move, why make a slightly more expensive version of the A7SIII minus a viewfinder (which many outdoor videographers live and die by), that’s not designed to take photos and an extra XLR adapter/handle included? Sometimes Sony makes really strange decisions that may confuse consumers and cannibalise their product line. The a7c made sense, a more affordable full frame option but this just seems redundant and dumb. I mean looks cool by why tho? Anyways, great video as always. I’m glad you echoed the same criticisms.

Who is the Sony FX-3 for? It is for the solo or small-crew night-time street videographer, the harsh light concert videographer and the get-the-lions-eating-the-gazelle-at-night Safari videographer AND the Arizona or Australian desert time lapse video montage astrophotographer who want the big night sky slider-bar video expanses at 24 fps and ISO 12800 or ISO 25600 !!! Who is this NOT FOR! if you are a walk-down-the-street vlogger (get the Sony A7s2/s3 series or a Canon R6, a Nikon Z6 or even a Canon Powershot instead!) If you are the hybrid shooter for TV news and broadcast sports (get a Canon R5 or Sony A1 instead!) if you are the fast sports (Soccer/Football/Basketball/Hockey/F1/Skiing) and wildlife action photographer (use Canon 1Dx3 or Sony A1) If you cannot spend at least 4000+ Euros/Dollars as a film school student or just starting out videographer! My suggestion is the Fuji XT4 or the Panasonic G-series or a used Canon 5D4 or 1Dx2 with good lenses! What do you NEED to buy extra along with this camera? a) GET f/1.2 prime lenses and NOT f/1.8! You will get MORE out of this camera with the fastest prime lenses you can find and afford! b) get at least FOUR extra batteries so you can last an entire 8 to 12 hours shooting day! c) Get as many memory cards as you can afford! (i usually have at least 10 on set at all times!) d) Get a camera cage and attach a decent properly colour-calibrated 4K resolution tablet or 4K supersmartphone as your external monitor and external safety-video-recorder to attach to the HDMI port! THEN go out and shoot GREAT subject matter for a good story! vX

It feels like Sony's just trying to capture some of that BMPCC market. The only one up I think this has over the BMPCC range is the full-frame and E-Mount but other than that, the feature set doesn't seem to justify the product existing, especially considering I could get a BPMCC 4k for cheaper and then a MFT to 35mm speed booster to match. Maybe the XLR top handle and Sony's colour science & sensor could swing some people.

The lack of a viewfinder is a NON-ISSUE because you are going to attach the BEST SCREEN QUALITY Asus or Samsung Tablet with the 4K resolution that you can afford onto the camera cage and use THOSE as your reference monitors via the HDMI port once you have properly colour corrected them with some 3rd party display management and 4K video recording software! After that, you can set your ISO to 12800 and shoot some awesome night street imagery or some clear night sky time-lapse astrophotography on a 16mm, 35mm or 50mm F/1.2 lens! This Sony FX-3 is actually quite an excellent camera! I have only THREE caveats! No matter what ANYONE SAYS: a) Always buy a camera cage with this so you can attach the external 4K resolution tablets as a safety video file recorder and external monitor when properly colour calibrated. b) Always get AT LEAST FOUR extra batteries! c) ALWAYS get the fastest prime lenses you can afford! No f/1.8's here! You WANT AND NEED f/1.2 prime lenses! even if you have to use a Cinema PL-to-E-mount adapter! The Canon R5 compares very well by being more ergonomic and weather resistant and is slightly cheaper to this Sony BUT for cinema-specific imagery, Sony does have more cinema-specific features that slightly edges out the Canon R5. The Sony's up to ISO 400000+ extension is actually quite handy for my deep woods get the critical night footage of the Western Canada Lynx cat forays so that is ANOTHER win for Sony vs the R5. Price-wise this camera is STARTING to intrude upon the Medium Format sensor Fuji GFX-100s camera which is ANOTHER serious-quality camera to take a look at if you can handle using the 24 fps and 30 fps modes (i.e. no 60 or 120 fps!) for video on a Medium Format Sensor. The colour rendition on the Fuji is SO STUNNING, that I would at least CONSIDER it when compared to the Sony FX-3 and Canon R5. Test them all and BUY the camera that has the BEST image quality with the BEST battery life AND THE BEST LENSES! v
