I like the more video-centric nature of the FX3 vs A7S III. To me the five mounting points are gold, and the handle/XLR is appreciated. I just wish Sony would learn the value of shutter angle and anamorphic support. As a result this camera can only ever be a B-cam, but for those times when low light performance, 4K/120, and better AF are required, it earns its place in my studio.
@junefiasco Жыл бұрын
So what would your 'A' camera be?
@artistjoh Жыл бұрын
@@junefiasco I currently use several cameras including the Sony A7S II, A7R II, ZV1, ZV-E10, JVC LS300, Panasonic DVX200, GH5 M2, GH5S, G9 and GoPro as main cameras, depending on the job requirements. They each have pros and cons, but after the big announcement of the last 24 hours, I suspect the Panasonic G9 II is likely to become my main camera, although it will take using it before I can be certain. I keep getting sucked in to using Sony cameras, but Panasonic stabilization, anamorphic support, shutter angle, menus, and ergonomics, as well as the smaller MFT lenses always pull me back. The rock solid AF of the new camera means I may have finally found my perfect camera. I won't get rid of my Sony cameras, but I find myself using them less and less over time.

One thing that could differentiate the FX3 from the a7S III is the noise reduction, because the cinema line is noticeably superior in that regard. If the FX3 doesn't have the cinema NR at launch, maybe it could get it via firmware update and then that would be a valid reason to pick it, instead of the a7S III (assuming it doesn't get the same update) for video work.

That ending was great.......your thoughts are exactly what I was thinking......No EVF and more expensive. If you plan to get the K3M then it will save you some cash ($178 for EDU discount people), but even then you don't get the mic and if you ever sell the camera to upgrade you can't keep the audio piece anyway so might as well just buy them separately so you don't have to worry about buying one again in the future.....but I could see both sides. I think you made a very good point, the FX3 needs shutter angle and DCI 4K at 24p to be an FX camera. Part of me also wished that it would have sported a 6k sensor like the FX9, or even the A1's 8k sensor, would be perfect for mounting on Sony's upcoming drone. Nice video like always and excellent ending!

If they add all that to a beginner Cine cam, then why will anyone get the FX6 or FX9?
@ahmedreads17944 жыл бұрын
@@TOKSVISIONZ well if they don't even add one meaningful feature to the SIII whats the point of an FX3 besides the cosmetic change?
@TOKSVISIONZ4 жыл бұрын
@@ahmedreads1794 The fact that they added a fan and can shoot much longer than the SIII. So for those who do interviews or long form recording, then can take advantage of the high codecs with long shooting times. It also doesn't need a cage to attach certain add-ons, which keeps the overall setup much lighter. So this are all options, if you don't need this, get the SIII, but if you do, here is an option without having to pay for the much more expensive FX6 or FX9.
@ahmedreads17944 жыл бұрын

@@ahmedreads1794 I'm lost, so are you saying they shouldn't have made the camera because those improvements or additions don't mean anything to you. Sounds like a selfish point of view. My question to you is how does this release impact you negatively. It's either for you or it isn't. Someone else finds it useful. Every camera isn't built for you. They all have their usefulness to someone else. I actually love the idea. I don't mind 10 different cameras for 10 different type of shooters, than 1 or 2 for all. Especially if i have to spend a ton of money for a few features that i need. This is a FX3, the lowest of the Cine line, you can't expect much from the lowest. Why then spend $10K plus for a FX9?

You did say you were hoping for more 'video centric' aspects, but what I was really hoping for were waveforms, false color, anamorphic squeeze, LUT import etc. I'm sure they aren't hard to implement. I mean how could they be, they are part of the software, not hardware. You already have a built in LUT for Slog that changes how the image is displayed even though it's recorded the same. You also have that Display button that switches between the leveler, camera info, clean display and histogram (the dreaded histogram). Why not have an option in the menu for "Use Waveform instead of Histogram - Yes/No" (maybe even size options or opacity) or a False Color LUT basically. You have the option for screen markers for cinema crop lines, why not Anamorphic. So many things could be done software-wise. Also, very interesting that they "include" the module in the box (as B&H says in their description). But I'm very curious about people that already have the other module, or another preferred audio setup that they don't want to give up. What then? Is Sony not going to give us a box with just the camera? That would be weird. It's like only having the option of buying new cameras with the Kit Lens included, no "body only" option.

I really think they should have included DCI 4K with the FX3 to make it more distinguished from the A7SIII. That would not cannibalize the FX6 because that one has the variable ND filters and some other stuff......they can still include the DCI4K to the FX3 with a firmware. They really should. Not having the DCI 4K (but having the viewfinder) can be the special thing for the A7SIII. Besides my remark above ....as always the best review on the internet...thanks.

i bought the fx6 and the a7siii in hope that they would have matching colors but i was disappointed ... i hope sony fixes that with firmware because this would make buying the fx3/a7siii and fx6 combo the perfect A/B Cam setup ... and since cinematch works rather well i guess it must but only a software issue ... i imagine a new cine EI mode on all Sony cameras that is perfectly matched, for base iso only that should not be that hard but it would be such a help imo

Does it give an option to use waveforms? That's always one of my biggest gripes about using mirrorless or DSLR cameras. You'd think something being marked in a "cinema" line would have that, but based on your review it doesn't seem like that is an option without an external monitor.

Hi Gerald! Absolutely love your content! Quick question, does the audio module that comes with the fx3 fit on the A7siii on the shoe mount as well? Or does the mounting bolts/anything else interfere with that fit? Considering buying a second A7siii soon, but might get this FX3 instead for my second (or primary and making the A7siii b cam), especially if the handle and interface fit/work on both cameras. Of course the handle wouldn’t be structurally fit for carrying the A7siii from the shoe, but just might be a cool audio option if it works. Thank you! This is a well thought out addition to the Sony line up of video oriented cameras. Having hard points around the camera built into the frame is a welcome addition, one that I hope starts a trend with other camera makers. You listed a few shortcomings with which I agree, but I will add one more... there is no TimeCode support. I read an article how big-time filmmakers may wish to use this camera for on car placements or other uses on set to add shots that can cut in with the Venice camera. Well not having TC is a problem there. Yes it can record an LTC audio track and that is the only option but even the BMPC 4K camera at $1295 supports real TC in meta data.

I have two questions that applies equally to the FX3, as they do to the a7SIII: when filming in HLG using the S Gamut3.cine setting (wished there was a BT2020 setting), can one record internally at 30p using the 300mbps 4K S-I All-I codec, or is the bit rate reduced when recording HLG internally ? Also, when importing into FCP, can one convert into a format that is less limiting than Rec 709, for instance a post HDR color gamut that is closer to the Rec 2020 color space ? Thanks, Julia
