@@Civ6Iron4 After Otto von Habsburg retired as Head of House in 2007, Karl von Habsburg formally renounced his succession rights. That is why I called him the UNOFFICIAL pretender to the throne, because he does not see himself as worthy of continuing the legacy of his grandfather, Karl I. And even if he did not renounce his succession rights, he would have to bear the burden of passing his titles onto his son, Ferdinand von Habsburg. This would be difficult, because not only does Ferdinand not show the slightest interest in ruling, but he is now a race car driver. He wouldn't want to give up this prestige to rule an Empire that no longer exists. So it is for the best that Karl renounced his succession rights.

God save Francis the Emperor"') was a personal anthem to Francis II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and later of the Austrian Empire, with lyrics by Lorenz Leopold Haschka (1749-1827) and music by Joseph Haydn. It is sometimes called the "Kaiserhymne" . Haydn's tune has since been widely employed in other contexts: in works of classical music, in Christian hymns, in alma maters, and as the tune of the "Deutschlandlied", still today the national anthem of Germany.

Interesting to see that the German version used is the later rewrite of the lyrics, circa 1854: Gott erhalte, Gott beschütze unsern Kaiser, unser Land! 𝄇 Most German versions you hear default to the 1797 lyrics: Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!

great video, from where did you get the coat of arms? and were all those versions official ones?
@KingdomofFiume Жыл бұрын
The coat of arms were from the respective subdivisions of the Habsburg Empire. For instance, the Czech part shows the coat of arms of Bohemia and Moravia, while the Romanian part shows the coat of arms of the Principality of Transylvania and the Duchy of Bukovina. When it comes to the officiality of these lyrics, I think the German lyrics were the sole official lyrics of Kaiserhymne because German is the main official language of the empire (Hungarian and Croatian languages were also given official status but I'm not sure if the translations were made official as well). Not sure about the other languages, since languages such as Czech, Polish, and Romanian were not official languages; I think they're mostly de facto instead and that the lyrics were translated for the diverse ethnicities of the Habsburg Empire to understand the anthem in their own languages, even without official recognition.

The English version is NOT the Kaiserhymne of Austria or of Austria-Hungary. This is the English version of the 1797 version of Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, which was the anthem of the Holy Roman Empire, not Austria. The Kaiserhymne of Austria-Hungary does not even mention the Emperor by name until the penultimate verse, so this version does not even make sense being here. Here is the rendition I came up with, which is the real translation of this song in English. May God protect, may God preserve, Our Emperor and our land! Powerful through the support of the faith, He leads us with a wise hand! Let us defend the crown of his fathers, Shielding it from every foe! Forever with the Habsburg throne, Austria’s fate remains united! Forever with the Habsburg throne, Austria’s fate remains united! Devout and honest, true and open, Let us stand for righteousness and duty! Let us, if needed, with joyous hope, Bravely go into battle! Ever mindful of the laurel wreaths, That the army so often wove itself! Wealth and blood be spent for our Emperor, Wealth and blood for the fatherland! Wealth and blood be spent for our Emperor, Wealth and blood for the fatherland! What the citizens’ industry has made, Is protected by our soldiers’ strength! With the cheerful weapons of the mind, Art and science triumph! May blessings be granted unto the land, And may its fame match the blessings! The sun of God shines in peace, Upon Austria-Hungary! The sun of God shines in peace, Upon Austria-Hungary! Let us always stand together, For in unity there is power! With our combined strength, The difficult is easily overcome! Let us, united by the bands of brothers, Go towards a single goal! Hail the Emperor! Hail the Empire! Austria-Hungary will forever stand! Hail the Emperor! Hail the Empire! Austria-Hungary will forever stand! At the Emperor’s side prevail, Those related to him by blood and spirit! Rich in charm that never ages, Is our glorious Empress! What is praised as luck most highly, May Heaven pour upon them! Hail Franz Joseph! Hail Elise! Bless the entire House of Habsburg! Hail Franz Joseph! Hail Elise! Bless the entire House of Habsburg! Hail also the Emperor’s son, The pledge of a joyful future! The pride and joy of his parents, “Rudolf!” resounds throughout the land! May God preserve our Crown Prince, Bless him and give him good luck, From the very first bloom of youth, Onward to the future times! From the very first bloom of youth, Onward to the future times!

The Holy Roman Empire did not have an anthem. The Kaiserhymne was written specifically for the Emperor and the house of Habsburg, not the empire. It became an anthem for the people of the Austrian empire later.

@@alexb.8038 The Holy Roman Empire did not have an official anthem, but Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser was the unofficial anthem of the HRE.

@@mikeor- And this isn't even the original setting of that melody and text. The original setting as far as I know was in G major for Voice and Piano by Haydn. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGrLaaR_q7-aesU Later came the string quartet setting of the melody(Emperor String Quartet second movement), and then the piano arrangement of that string quartet. Then, sometime afterwards, it got transposed to Eb major. And even later, it became an official anthem of first Austria and then Germany. But that melody can be traced back to Haydn's Das Kaiserlied.

@@caterscarrots3407 I didn't say this is the original setting of the melody and text. What I said is that this translation is for the 1797 version of the Kaiserhymne, which was never used for Austria-Hungary. It was used in the Holy Roman Empire, not Austria. You can say Austria was part of the HRE, but the 1854 version, which is used at every other point in this video, is not translated into English here.
