I always thought the HiZack's design was a 'joke' by the Titans since the Zaku was a symbol of Zeon, and the Titans were basically a Spacenoid oppression unit, a little psychological warfare goes a long ways. I grant this is just a head-theory of mine.

Here's another reason: AE didn't just acquire Zeon's mobile weapon _engineers,_ they got the manufacturing plants and existing tooling as well. These facilities could probably make Hizack parts with minimal modification but would have required a fair bit of investment to retool to federation-style suits. A similar thing happened in France after it was liberated in WW2: When they rearmed, what they had around were facilities and parts for german-style tanks, so that's what they started out building as a stopgap measure until they had the time and resources to refit everything. Their first self-produced tanks (as opposed to ones received from other allied forces) near the end of WW2 were german Panthers put together from existing parts, and their first post-war designs had a number of distinctly german design elements.

The thing i loved about zeta gundam is the fusion of Zeonic suits and federation suits between the two sides. Amuro piloting a zeonic like suit the dijeh and rick dias(spirital rick dom successor) and Char/quattro piloting a gundam and later a gundam prototype in the hyaku shiki. Titans fielded two Psychomu gundams and the GM 2 was still seen being fielded along side the hizacks pretty late into the gryps conflict. Felt natural for the fusion of MS design to make it to that point.
@dark7element
@dark7element Жыл бұрын
For all the seeming absurdity of the Titans fielding lots of Zaku-looking Hizacks in Zeon colors, there are plenty of occasions in Zeta when you're reminded that it's the Earth Federation the heroes are fighting against. GMs, Guncannons, and Tin Cods (those crappy Federation fighter jets) appear in decent numbers in the early story arcs. It's surprisingly late in the series when the remaining Earth Federation forces are absorbed by either the Titans or the growing AEUG, and the heroes end up killing rather a lot of loyal non-Titan Federation soldiers before that point.
@Nehfarius
@Nehfarius 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, the Hizack always gave me the impression that it was meant for either late in the OYW, or the interim between it and the Titans conflict. It's an in-between suit, roughly on par with a Gelgoog, but not good enough to keep up with better units. Kinda the same situation as the GM 2.

Also for a "Peacekeeping" force like the Titans, you don't really need to give them that good of a machine so giving them a Hizack which is Cheap but good enough of a Machine also makes sense, Another reason could be similar to the French in the Interwar and Post War years, During the Interwar years France didn't Invest Heavily on it Military as they lacked the Economy to Build it up after WW1, Command was also slow to adopt and improve on Tactics, Communications and Weaponry for example the French in the interwar period for the most part still used Signal Flags over Radios because they feared that the Radios would be tapped by the Enemy, In the Post War Era, France had a Shortage of weaponry as they were Occupied in WW2 and had to Restrore the State after the war so they had to rely on Captured and Lended Equipment, so in the late 40s France was able to use The Panther of WW2 fame and began complaning about it.

Zaku(II) was the most produced mobile suit in UC history when the OYW ended there is still a lot of suits, parts left not to mention the half-finished suits still on production lines. The HiZack was designed to reduce the cost for both production and maintenance by reusing the parts from Zaku as much as possible.

8:00 there's also another reason that links with that one. there's no need to make a "high end" unit either. they arent at war, they just needed basically "police worth gear", and even if it gets stolen, they wont risk being nuked again. its kinda like today, the US is looking to revive the mid tier fighter, even if, in a dogfight, it holds no candle to the top fighters, it will be cheaper to produce, cheaper to refuel and cheaper to maintain. for a massive army, a weapon you cant use because it needs repair is less usefull than one that is only a third as good, but can actually get the job done.
@Feiora
@Feiora 4 жыл бұрын
Except the point of having top tier aircraft means you own the skies and require less aircraft filling the skies to be damaged in the first place, stepping down makes as much sense as shooting yourself in the foot. Yes, you'll get disability payments but you can now no longer do what you once could do with impunity.
@marcosdheleno
@marcosdheleno 4 жыл бұрын
@@Feiora except, not really, top fighters are absurdly expensive to fuel, and have pitifully low flight times. nobody is saying that there shouldnt be top fighters, just that they arent as needed for like anti-helicopter, or just border patrol. for example. an Super tucano costs around 6M, is easy to train, can stay in the air for 8 hours straight, costs around 500 bucks per hour to stay in the air and is pretty cheap to maintain. now compare it to an f35. 90+M each, with 40k per hour, requires intense training, has a much shorter flight time between 2-4 hours, and requires pretty specialized constant maintenance.
@Feiora
@Feiora 4 жыл бұрын
@@marcosdheleno And theres the rub, sure the Super Tucano has 8hrs flying time and whats the point of that if it takes you forever to get to where you need to be? Why must the soldiers on the ground need to wait and die for the slow prop instead of the fast jet? Economics is a poor excuse for the families of the guys on the ground that die waiting for CAS... On the flipside, theres no reason to keep pushing for more expensive jets, F-16s and F-18s should be perfectly fine considering that most airforces have similar or older aircraft, there really is no reason to goto F-22/F-35 level of air control unless its First World vs First World...
@marcosdheleno
@marcosdheleno 4 жыл бұрын
@@Feiora but that's my point, also, the super tucano is basically a weaker but cheaper A-10. and i used it as an example because it is a pretty cheap combat aircraft that has alot of use nowadays exactly because its "underpowered" in comparisson. besides, in many situations, using a f16 or f18 doesnt actually means a better result.

The Ideon....oops! Wrong anime. But yeah, none of the MAs in the UC were practical. Despite their high potential kill counts, they’re expensive and take forever to maintain. To be generous, the closest you might get are the Biggro or Grublo since there were multiples of both. One suits Zeon’s hit-and-run tactics for space battles while the other is enough to discourage the Federation from sending suits underwater. Even then, there are probably mobile suits that can crank out as much speed as the Bigro and can be produced in rapid succession. Plus, there’s not enough battle scenarios where a Grublo is needed when a Gogg can do the job while strutting along the ground with utmost swagger.

I was under the impression that the Hi-Zack had some sort of connection to the Act Zaku which was supposedly stolen by the Earth Federation along with the Gabaldy Alpha. It was a Zaku that used a beam rifle and beam saber, and coincidentally the beam rifle the Hizack and Marasai uses are the same design as the Act Zaku. The in-universe idea of the Hi-Zack as possible Republic SDF machine is actually a pretty cool idea, and something that makes a lot more sense back when Zeta premiered in the 80s before a lot of the extra material was released like 0083. This is a great one that I've put a lot of thought into myself. You hit a lot of good points I hadn't even considered. I kind of wish Zeta Gundam had stuck with the idea of giving the AEUG the Zeon inspired mobile suits and the Titans the Federation ones. It would have made the whole thing about how the Earth vs. Space conflict gets flipped on its head in Zeta Gundam seem more poignant. Granted it makes the most sense the way they did it. With AEUG taking on the Zeon mobile suit engineers it's not surprising that both sides have a mix of suits from both since there's now a very diverse set of engineers with different backgrounds and different design ideologies at work at the same company.

Question: In any of the Gundam Universes, was there ever a case for Mobile Armors or (jets) to be the more practical than Mobile Suits?
@nedinnis6752
@nedinnis6752 4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes. In 0079, it was easier to use a jet for reconnaissance and taking out infantry, including Core Fighters, since they were more difficult to spot than your average mobile suit. In water combat, based off of what I saw Mobile Armors are a lot better than Mobile Suits since they're able to rely on more armor and power for beam weaponry. In Gundam SEED, there was a weird case there for MAs being better for the Federation since they couldn't figure out how to make a useable MS for normal people. That changed when they got Kira to provide vital data and programming for a new Naturals system so any military personnel could use a mobile suit, and not just Coordinators.

If this is UC-era, I'd assume it's because a lot of the earlier battles of the OYW and even before that, tanks were seen as the mainstay of any military force. By having tank-based mobile suits, it makes it easier for veteran tank pilots or even pilots with a preference for tanks rather than full mobile suits. It would probably also be cheaper and easier to manufacture due to having a tank as a base to work from instead of developing new mobile suits for each situation that arises.

It's clear that hunting Zeon remnants was *never* an actual priority for the Titans leadership, especially Jamitov, who was a closeted Contolist himself. Aside from Axis, which they could've attacked at any time and chose not to, there were also Zeon remnants running around on Earth itself in places like Africa, which the Titans never bothered doing anything about. You can actually draw a parallel to the Syrian civil war, where Assad's Syrian Arab Army was more interested in destroying the Free Syrian Army while mostly leaving ISIS and Al Qaeda alone until they were the only opposition left, since those were the 'unacceptable' alternatives that justified their own heavy-handed regime.

Being a military history nerd is surprisingly helpful. Why not make something federation like for the feds? Well, why does the M60 bear so much resemblance to the MG42? Why is the PASGT and ACH so heavily inspired by the Stahlhelm? Same answer. There is also the possibility that they wanted to also wanted to make use of existing Zeon industrial equipment, to buff out their own capacity. Its already there, you own it now, so why not? That has been an idea pursued many times through history, albeit often to...very poor effect.

I've always just figured that the plans and maybe even a prototype design for the Hizack had already been on the minds of Zeonic's top engineers around the end of the one year war as it doesn't seem that much better than a Gelgoog, that it was just easier for them to build it in the Zeonic style than give it a complete design overhaul adding more time and cost to the project when the Fed's really just needed stopgap units until they could come up with something better. Maybe there was also a psychological factor in the design choice seeing as the Titan's would be operating in space hunting rebels you know before they went mad with power as their commanders intended. That someone figured that by giving them a "Spacenoid unit" that Spacenoids civilians would I don't know be more at ease with the more familiar look keeping the peace and you know come to think of it it's also a perfect unit for false flag ops.

In my head cannon this is what happen: 1. The federation need zeon mobile suit to keep superiority because even fed mobile suit is more advanced zeon mobile suit have more custom and specialized mobile suit that can possibly outgun the standarized fed ms because of that fed ask anaheim to upgrade zeon ms to see how much potential does zeon ms have in order keep the standarized ms more stronger than the zeon counterpart also to integrate the potential on the fed ms if possible so some of the upgraded zeon ms is pushed to the military 2. For anaheim this give them opportunity to profit while giving fed zeon ms they collect combat data and sell even beter machine to anyone who can buy it because it give the costumer feeling that their ms is the best for example they have hizack and also selling the gm that have better spec to the fed and makes them think our mobile suit is better than zeon but also selling even beter mobile suit to aeug then repeat the process this will keep demands coming and the customer got a feeling they got what they demands

How do beam weapons or lack thereof depend on reactor power? As I understand, the energy used by beam rifles comes from a pre-charged battery, either integrated (as with RX-78-2's beam rifle) or removable (post-OYW MS), or an integrated generator (Neo Gundam's GBRD). The only beam weapons that actually require energy input from the mobile suit itself are built-in beam cannons (for example, Zeong hands) or beam sabers charged from the MS (basically, any beam saber-equipped MS). This means even a Zaku I can use a pre-charged beam rifle because it is a completely external weapon. Thus, you can have both a beam saber and a beam rifle on the Hizack. 9:56 PS: is it a BIG ZAM?

There is a pre-Zera manga about a Titans Test Team, and when they get the first Hizack. The pilots are very sceptical, but as their superior points out, Zeon did have a headstart in MS development, and it would be foolish to not learn from them. And when their jury-rigged Gundam is out of action, they are forced to deploy the Hizack. Something the Zeon remnants take very personally. And if there is one thing we can say about Anaheim Electronics, it is that they make quality MS Suits. They make AEUG suits based on the stolen Gundam Mk II, and Titans suit based on a stolen Rick Dias. And both sides leave generally good reviews. Oh I have to find the anime somewhere, the manga is absolutely fantastic. Love the suits, love the characters, the plot, the conflict, there being three or four factions (+AE).

My headcannon was always that it was to keep maintenance/production costs low in the post-1YW Era, when most of the Federation's funds would be diverted to reconstruction efforts, thus leading to budget cuts to military spending to offset reconstruction costs. The Federation doesn't have a war to fight anymore, so a cheap mobile suit that likely has a lot of parts commonality with the Zaku 2 (the most mass produced MS of the 1YW and thus there's probably a TON of Zaku 2 parts scattered around and factories still tooled to produced Zaku 2 parts at the time the war ended) would actually be ideal for them to field a military that can fend off Zeon remnants while still being pretty cost effective for the massive amount of needed post-war reconstruction. At the time of the Gryps Conflict, the Federation has clearly started to spend more resources on rearming and fielding newer MS prototypes with better capabilities because of events like operation Stardust, but are still somewhat in the early stages of turning said prototypes into mass production units, hence why much of the Federarion's military (specifically the Titans) are still fielding large quantities of Hizacks.
@DiehardMechWarrior
@DiehardMechWarrior 4 жыл бұрын
For me, I instantly went to aggressor squadron/RED FLAG type exercises as a potential purpose for the Hizack, like what we saw in Stardust Memory with the aggressor Zaku II F2s, but that these were repurposed for front line usage by the Titans once they rose to prominence. It’s a visually similar suit to the Zaku II that can keep pace with the GMs/GM IIs it’s doing exercises with and is cheap enough to produce in large quantities so that replacement parts/suits are easily available. That just gets up and hollers “I’M A REDFOR SUIT AND I’M DAMN PROUD” if I ever saw it do so. The Republic of Zeon contract would’ve just been gravy had it gone through. I’m not sure if the thing would’ve fit within the RoZ doctrine, but that’s a problem for the military higher-ups to figure out, not me.
@Brawler_1337
@Brawler_1337 4 жыл бұрын
I figured the Hizack was adopted mostly for training purposes. The Titans were created to flush out Zeon remnants, so at the time they were most likely to go up against OYW Zeon suits. Hence, it would make sense if the Titans used a Zeonic-looking suit to practice on, since it would more or less embody what the Titans would be shooting at in live fire scenarios. This also explains why the Titans have their Hizacks colored in Zaku green. Of course, when the Gryps Conflict broke out, the Titans had to deploy every suit they had to contribute to the effort, including Hizacks.

I agree with the product dumping but I think it was a move towards standardization as well. The Zeon forces already did that with their units, meaning that their parts could work with newer builds. By that point the efsf had been using Zaku II F2 units and Luna II was operating the Galbaty beta. It was made by AE to be a cheap production unit for the normal federal forces based on the zaku frame and able to be made on leftover zaku production lines. The Titans test it because a organization there size requires steady me supply so with the adoption of the Hi-zack they ran there own tests to see if it was worth using. @@jeremyscherer8828 www.mahq.net/mecha/gundam/aoz/yrms-106.htm Here is the YRMS-106 HI-Zack pre-production general purpose mobile suit as seen is AOZ : FOT Manufacturer: Anaheim Electronics/Earth Federation Forces (Confeito Arsenal) Built as a joint venture by AE and the MS plant at the former Solomon base hence the 10 in the 106 code as zeta Era ms used by the Federation the first two digits are the plant code the hobby version of the suit is retooled at Luna II plant 11 production site of the Beta and the Custom. The mahq profile on the pre production type is below. The RMS-106 Hi-Zack was the first mass production mobile suit created by Anaheim Electronics. Its external appearance resembled that of the famous Zaku II series used by the old Principality of Zeon, and this design could only have been created by Anaheim, which absorbed the Zeonic Company that was once Zeon's major mobile suit maker. Zeonic's development know how was incorporated in the machine's inner construction as well as its outward appearance, giving it the same high operating reliability and ease of production as the Zaku II. Naturally, it could use beam weapons, and it was the first mass production machine to include a linear seat and panoramic monitor as standard equipment. The Earth Federation Forces made a tentative decision to formally adopt this machine, and a test evaluation unit was assigned to the Titans Test Team to investigate whether it should be adopted by the Titans as well. Its resemblance to the Zaku II made the Hi-Zack unpopular with the Titans, but their need to ensure a sufficient number of mobile suits for their growing organization ultimately left them with no alternative. The YRMS-106 Hi-Zack typically carried an energy pack holder on its left arm. Its backpack and leg thruster units lacked the deflecting plates seen in the final production version, and this early version of the Hi-Zack was armored with Luna Titanium alloy.
@JeffreyPiatt
@JeffreyPiatt 4 жыл бұрын
One of the first new mass production model mobile suits developed by the Earth Federation Forces following the One Year War, the RMS-106 Hi-Zack was closely based on the old Zeon MS-06F Zaku II used during the war. However, it did incorporate modern design features tested in the YRMS-106 Hi-Zack. Protected by lighter titanium alloy/ceramic composite armor, the Hi-Zack's solid weight was greatly reduced, allowing it to carry larger capacity fuel tanks and more powerful thrusters to take advantage of the extra fuel, with the result of greater speed and mobility. The Hi-Zack was also the first mass produced unit to incorporate the new 360-degree panoramic monitor with linear seat style cockpit. The Hi-Zack proved to be a popular model among pilots, as it was easy to operate and maintain. Its only major drawback, however, was the fact that its power generator wasn't good enough to allow it to effectively use multiple beam weapons. Despite this, the Hi-Zack was one of the most heavily mass produced units found in the field during the Gryps Conflict, and its design served as the basis for many future mobile suit models www.mahq.net/mecha/gundam/z/rms-106.htm

Anaheim Electronics probably gave the Feddies a similar business offering to what modern-day defence contractors offer to modern militaries: offer the weapons system at a discounted price, but keep the maintenance and parts supply contracts and squeeze out the profits there. It works for the EFF for a simple reason-the acquisitions budget would be much smaller than the budget for maintaining force preparedness and battlefield asset viability, which could both cover the costs of servicing the contract nicely. Couple that with selling compliance licenses (licenses to access information that would help make a system work on a proprietary platform basically. Stuff like access to firmware source code and OS sdk's would be covered by this) to the other EFF weapons manufacturers and you have a very good money-maker going for a long, long time. And if that also means that the Zeon guys get one last nose-thumbing in, that's probably worth a discount all by itself.

With the effective range of Mega Particle Cannons being way longer than the missile range, the standoff distance have greatly increase. Comparing the cost of operating missiles at that range is extremely costly and heavy, limiting the numbers able to be deploy in the field. A Mega Particle Cannon have lower firing cost compare to Long range missile, which make sense long range missiles fall out of favor.

Operation paperclip aside, the Czech's post war inherited a bunch of German run factories and with the tooling, plans, and parts left behind they started churning out their own re-engined version of the Messerschmitt BF-109 called the Avia S-199. The S-199 ironically would end up being sold to the state of Israel in the late 40s and ended going against Supermarine Spitfire's the British exported to countries like Egypt in the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.

I think the best answer is the Federation was slow in the mobile suit development versus Zeon. Keep in mind that Zeon mobile suits where much more advance in the beginning. Assuming that there was a lot of surplus Zeon mobile suits, it would be just much cheaper for the Federation to just modify them since there is a lot of compatibility in parts anyway. You can see this in action in 8th MS team when Aina gave Shiro some parts from her mobile suit to fix shiro's gundam.

I think the opening sequence of 0083 Stardust Memory makes it a little more clear why they were using Zakus as training units - that being the case, it makes more sense that they would have developed it using former Zeonic engineers. What I wonder about is why ZEON didn't use the Hizack in the One Year War. If it was possible to make an efficient, cheap, beam-weapon equipped model of the Zaku, why spend all those resources developing the Dom and the Gelgoog? Maybe the Hizack is what the Gelgoog should have been?

The Hizack isn't a Zeon suit. It's basically a combination of all the combat data acquired on the Zaku II, with the higher-grade components developed for the GM. @@dark7element You're really missing what I'm asking. If Zeon had the resources and the engineering prowess to develop suits like this after the war - clearly it was plausible that they could have made this instead of sinking all their resources into making the brand new Gouf, Gelgoog and the Dom. In other words, clearly making an efficient Zaku template with a beam rifle was possible, and that's all it really needed to be a mainline grunt unit that was functionally equal or better to the GM.

My take on this issue is, alot of Zaku 2 Fs are still in stock and un-upgraded. The manufacturers were probably inspired by blueprints of Zaku 2 high mobility and also because they are easy to maintain, cheaper to modify and produce parts in huge numbers. Not to miss, new pilots are easier to train too.

Are there any cases where units or pilots have refused to sortie in outdated suits? I was just playing the F91 0122 SNES game and realized how many Jegans the Federation was fielding, them even making the bulk of a special task force. Given that the Jamesgun was already built by this point, wouldn't pilots object to being made to sortie in two generations old suits?

The Grips War was probably the most confusing time in UC Gundam history. It just seems like MSs are just tossed around to who ever and go from there. At least things settle and get more organized by Zeta.

So. That's why post oyw feddie grunt suits has a monoeye plus added sensors like the jegan, jesta, etc under the visor.

I just saw the Hizack as a mix of leftover parts. We have the Zaku Production line building so many of them and suddenly stopped and we have the GM production line. For example sovjets made 50k T34 Tanks between 1940 and 1940. and americans idk how many Sherman’s. So they just used these 2 assembly Lines + some improvements and the Hizack was born. Federation itself probably didn’t want that suit because it looks how it looks but the titans didn’t care they wanted a cheap suit to produce

I also think that they had a lot of surplus parts..and just wanted to make the parts they have work with some of the newer stuff...

Speaking of "Not about it working, it's about it keeping you alive", a good example is the U.S military's use of Silly String on the battlefield. It's lightweight when sprayed and brightly colored, allowing it to be used to detect traps.

Here's an interesting topic, or question: How is that the Federation in the UC timeline became more incompetent as time went on? One Year War: They were able to fend of Zeon's Mobile Suits with tanks, planes and foot soldiers (good job there). 0083: They had a Gundam with nukes stolen by someone who literally just walked into their base. During the few years the Titans were in power: They did nothing to intervene to stopping their horrible practices - I mean, the Earth Forces in Gundam 00 eventually said enough was enough and fought the A-Laws, so there shouldn't be any excuses. F91: They thought the Crossbone Vanguard was nothing to worry about, despite proving to be a powerful force that succeeded in taking over colonies and wiped out multiple squadrons with ease. Victory: They only stepped in at the last minute after a ship on wheels came into town. You see my point?

@Akin Khoo I know. I'm doing a comparison. In UC, the Federation did nothing to stop the Titans after things were getting way too out of hand. In Anno Domini, the Earth Forces said enough was enough after A-Laws went too far.

The Federation growing corrupt, fewer good people remained with the Federation to maintain some degree of competency, the entire faction being cheap bastards to maintain tight security of their stuff, zero contingencies to deal with enemy Aces and Newtypes other than git gud, not to mention any amount of peace time causes the quality of pilots and MS to stagnate. There’s probably more reasons out there, but a major one has to be the dwindling numbers of good people that remain with the Federation to keep the entire faction from completely devolving into buffoonery over the years. Hell, we’re gonna end up watching Bright’s resignation from the Federation real soon with Hathaway’s Flash. There’s hardly a single person worthy of filling those shoes once he’s gone and the future can attest to that.

It's great to know there are people who look at the universal century as I do. Putting together the politics and information to the story, to create a highly realistic and believable alternate universe. People were missing the stories buried within the stories for so so long. I always believed that the Gundam story was intended as a warning of where we're headed as a society. Maybe not technologically but politically, ethically and socially.

Who knows. Maybe the GM 2 was upgraded later with the movable frame. Or later production incorporated it. At least that could might explain the timeline issue.
