Sometimes a short question requires a long, multiparter answer. Addendum: I just remembered TGM, which is used by the GM Trainer and GM Cannes. The T here stands for Trainer and the rest is your preferred version of GM. I remember reading a long time ago that the reason the Rick-Dias has two model numbers is because Anaheim wanted to conceal the fact that they were developing mobile suits for the AEUG; Internally, it was designated MSA-099, but officially it was designated RMS-099 so as not to draw any unnecessary attention from the Titans.

Yeah. That always has been my own head canon about the Rick Dias and its two model numbers. Especially since the Gryps War hadn't really started yet when the Rick Dias was introduced at large. So it made sense to hide who the Rick Dias was actually developed for. Also I read somewhere that the Rick Dias was orginally developed for the Federation as a follow on to that of the Hi Zack but in mid development was to become an AEUG machine instead.

Anyone ever notice around the Zeta period, a lot of the suits shared the Zeta chest? Driesen, Bawoo, ZZ, Zeta, even the Tristan and others have that distinct chest that comes out, red hatch, and small rectangular yellow vents. Not sure if it has to do with the moveable frame, but its interesting

If I have to guess, RMS is used for Mobile Suits produced by former Zeon engineers in Anaheim Electronics. It's clear that they were following a seperate development path from GM line with the monoeyes as clear distinction. Also they are following the legacy of Zeon Mobile Suits by keeping MS in the designations and only adding in R at the start.

My guess for the Loto is its SNRI's own internal designation system. The Loto might not have a proper EFF designation on account of it being fielded by the ECOAS. Or it might have an entirely different designation. You see that a few times with military hardware, having multiple designations because of things like classification, reporting names, being known different to different branches [The M134 Minigun is called that by the US Army, while the USN/USAF/[Presumably USMC] call it the GAU-2/A]

For my novels, I took those serials to mean something, so we have the Gundams developed on Earth carrying the EMMF suffix , standing for "Earth Machine Mobile Forces", ONI's XP Gundams being "Experimental Prototypes", their mass-produced Mobile Suits are OX, "ONI Experimental", with the OX-03 Mercy being the third model! The EMMF machines got various new names! After she repainted it and added new thrusters along with OS tweaks, we went from gun metal grey flex patterns, like on US Navy Jets such as the F22 Raptor, to a red coloured with inward and down pointing dual stripes on each shoulder, the "EMMF-06S Recon Est", after her mother who she hated for abandoning her as unwanted as a baby, the red paint job a deliberate choice as, after she tracked her down as an adult she learned her mother hated the colour red (fun fact, my own mother also actually hated red as a choice for car colour, even though her middle name was Rose, but she was born in Yorkshire, the WHITE Rose County)! And cuz we always have to have a red Mobile Suit, plus the stripes are orange like the Kyrios and Arios that inspired its design! EMMF-001 Commando Gundam got "S" on the 001 and the suffix of "Stage" to denote its enhancement state, initially going from a sandy desert colour to that of the more traditional main Gundam unit of dark blue torso and head jewel, with white arms, legs and head and yellow feet (Leeds United colours)! Sticking with colour schemes, the EMMF-009 Sabotage Gundam was painted jet black like the Stealth Bomber as a homeage to its steslth capabilities, much like the Deathscythe line and Blitz were! And that is the ONLY Wing influence I will admit to and even then it's not really a Wing influence at all, if you think about it... Also, EMMF-004 Intercept was a mottled green, drawing from its own Dynames/Buster influences! The Regal Navy developed three machines too, but I haven't even written that far yet, so...

RMS mobile suits are those developed by Zeonic after being absorbed by Anaheim Electronics. RMS is a combination of Federal and Zeon nomenclature, with the R coming from the RX and RGM lines and the MS coming from Zeon's naming convention.

One theory for the number being a year off is they may use fiscal year, not calendar year. In the Air Force, out aircraft tail number had the year it was contracted. Tail 93-1563 was contracted (the contract for purchase) in 1993. But the Department or Defense uses the fiscal year, so it could have been signed from October 1992 to October 1993. The RGC-80 contract could have been signed just after the 0080 fiscal year started in the Federation, making it a 0080 model year. Just a guess though.

I have a theory for why the Titans era Federation machines used RMS instead of RGM. Zeon units used the MS designation and since many Titans mobile suits had very Zeon esque designs it's not a big leap to assume that they were adapted from unused Zeon mobile suit plans. Maybe at one point they were meant to be Zeon suits but after they lost the war the designs went to the Federation who simply added the R in front of the existing model number of those suits and just rolled with that naming convention for a while.

@Saved_Sinner0085
@Saved_Sinner0085 3 жыл бұрын
More people need to see this comment. The Neue Ziel was supposed to be deployed in the OYW but it was never built, Hamman Karn took the plans to Axis who had tons of extra cash laying around and bankrolled its production before deploying it to Gato in 0083. Char's Deleted affair: PotYC ret-conned ina prior MA of this type with the AMA-00R (Zero GR) which Char Piloted to great effect. The NZ-222 Psycho Doga was original the second machine of this type but only appeared in the Novel of CCA like the Nightingale and Hi-Nu, the NZ-333 Alpha Azierieu was originally the third machine of this type but used true psycommu weaponry instead of the quasi-psychommu weapons if the original Neue Ziel. The two Neo Zeong (NZ-999/999-II) were obviously the last armors' of this type although were not developed through the same lineage and came from Anaheim and not Axis like the other machines. I don't personally count the NZ-666 Kshatriya as one of these machines as it was more of a miniaturized Queen Mansha (which was basically a cross between a Psycho Gundam and a Qubeley) and was more of a giant MS (like the QM) than an actual Mobile Armor.

The Zeon might have used their own calendar, but we are not as familiar with it as the Federation Universal Century (UC). In common with the Japanese calendar (e.g. 1926 for Showa, 1987 for Heisei, 2019 for Reiwa) and other similar calendars, it might have been based on the start of a person/family/faction. A possible date for the Zabi family would be UC 0068, as Z 0001. This means 1979… Oops, 0079 would be Z 0012. If MS-06 Zaku II is like RX-78 Gundam, then UC 0073…? Gundam Seed's CE 73? But that is Degwin Zabi. For Zeon Zum Deikun, UC 0052 is ZZ 0001? UC 0079 is ZZ 0028. UC 0065 is ZZ 0014. Let us not forget Star Wars' Before the Battle of Yavin (BBY) and After the Battle of Yavin (ABY).

7:18 Due to copyrights and different Secret Space Program factions, not all Mobile Suits are available for use in a Gundam work. The Char's Counterattack movie can not use Zeta Gundam, so the movie replaced it with RGZ-91. Because Gundam Unicorn (Gundam UC) is sort of a reboot of Zeta Gundam, plus a sort of new 'For Begineers' Gundam work for the Universal Century timeline, it brought full force various old Mobile Suits to be included in it. Unicorn Gundam is sort of a stand-in for the 1979 Gundam, Zeta Gundam, and Nu Gundam. Of course Gundam Unicorn got tossed out pretty quickly after Gundam Build Fighters (GBF) with its GunPla battles arrived. See also Granblue Fantasy. And 'MLP'.

Out of universe, it's obvious that the Loto was just working backwards from the R-44 Guntank. F-50D => D-50C. In universe, I could see it being a completely unique designation because it's a special forces troop deployment unit, and not a "normal use" mobile suit. There are examples in real life of equipment intentionally being given mislabeled designations to hide their true purpose (for example, the MP 43 from World War II). I could imagine ECOAS wanting to keep their unusually tiny mobile suits a secret. For all we know, "D-50A" is the Federation's official designation for a Zero-Gee toilet, and an accountant seeing "D-50C" on an invoice wouldn't raise suspicion. But going back to model numbers, I've heard conflicting things about the Gundam's RX-78-2 designation. It's been said that there were eight Gundams produced, with the assumption there being that the number after the -78 is the unit number. Given that we know of the RX-78-1 through -7, that sort of makes sense (though we've never seen an RX-78-8). That also meant that the two Gundams destroyed in the first episode of the original show were the RX-78-1 and the -3. HOWEVER, I've also heard that the "eight Gundams" could specifically refer to there being multiple RX-78-2s. And that therefore, the units seen (and subsequently destroyed) in Mobile Suit Gundam were actually the "RX-78-2, Unit 1", "RX-78-2, Unit 2", and "RX-78-2, Unit 3". Do we know if either of these explanations (or, both, or neither) are correct?

Rx-1xx, Hyaku Shiki, and pretty much of the mechas in Zeta Gundam and so on can be considered as the '100 series', which is of course what "Hyaku Shiki" means in Japanese. During development of the Zeta Gundam TV series, many Mobile Suits basically went back and forth between factions, and the nature of the factions kept mutating. This leads to the concept of Anaheim Electronics being the developers of Mobile Suits for two (and more) factions against each other. AEUG themselves were originally supposed to be the military branch of Anaheim Electronics, instead of the so called 'rebels'. A Private Military Company, like Gundam 00's Celestial Being. And of course VOC / United East-Indies Company / Dutch's East-Indies Company's military.

My guess for the RMS to RGM swap is simply because if not all/future units were all very general based/easy to convert into another unit compared to the more experimental/limited produced general units that the Titans had as post Gryps, a lot of units were just based on usually a single frame, the Jegan for example, its parts were also used in the Anksha and ReZEL, so it's easy to use parts from those machines should the situation call for it. For the FD Model Number, my guess would be Federation Defender or Delta because let's be honest, a lot of times the Karl was used, it was used to defend or escort, even in Hathaway's Flash, they were used to defend Federation VIPs, so it wouldn't be surprising if these guys were meant for guard duty or spec ops (Which in honesty, they did do). Finally, about units with the D Model Number, I guess it might stand for Delta as in the special forces because the Loto, though the D-Type Jegan also has D in its model number, however that can be assumed that when used with the number could mean developed while D itself is Delta.

For the D-50C Loto I can only surmise it's this: D is an SNRI code, D-5 is an armored fighting vehicle designation, "0" is the first model of it's design, "C" is the 3rd unit. It's entirely plausible that SNRI has their own letter and number codes for this to make sense.

I've always assumed, that "RMS" is "Refined Mobile Suit," since most of the RMS designs seem to be based on Zeon's MS series. Especially since the actual number after the "RMS" tends to relate to a Zeon equivalent.

You should do a spot on the AU version of this question for the warship prefixes from Cosmic Era. We got the one for the Archangel Class and apparently also ones for the Laurasia and Nazca Class ships as well. Later in Destiny the Minerva gets her own prefix as well.

Dunno if anyone else pointed this out but the Loto was also made by SNRI as opposed to Anaheim and for that reason may follow VERY different naming conventions than your standard Federation suit; we see this IRL with firearms having all crazy sorts of designations usually determined by the company, as opposed to the client that receives them - the US being a notable exception.

The Loto is made by the SNRI. So to me it would mean that the D designation is a precursor to the F series. Within the F series the first number discribes the role of the mobile suit 9 means general purpose, 7 means support and 5 would probably be a guntank type or police use model. The second number is sequencial starting at 0. so the D50 is most likely the first unit in the D5 series.

With the exception of the GM II the RMS suits seem to be "Zeon style" with mono-eyes, etc. My assumption was always that they were designed or constructed by the former Zeon contractors Zeonic and Zimmand. In that case RMS suits would just be the the Zeon MS series continued under Federation management.

Some of the odd lettering designations from the Titans Newtype labs could also be explained by just what letter they are assigned, kind of like real life airports. PHX is for Phoenix Sky Harbor and makes since while ODR is O'Hare in Chicago and MCO is for Orlando.

The Model letters "AMX" may possibly be a reference to the French combat vehicle design and manufacturer Atelier de Construction d'Issy-les-Moulineaux (AMX). Early Gundam series often drew inspiration from the World War military aesthetics and equipment names. The real world AMX was born from the post WW2 nationalization and unification of multiple design firms and factories, not to the reunification and focusing of Neo Zeon.

D-50C could be Deployment-50-Carrier/Convoy as its A. a mobile suit that deploys troops/spec ops and B. we see it mainly in groups or Convoys while the FD-03 could stand for Fed. Defense-03 with it mainly being a defensive mobile suit in Unicorn and Narrative guarding both the earth laser base and transporting high rank prisoners and possibly Hathaway's flash as well but i have yet to see it

I think there's the possibility that "GM" is intended as a build on the term "G.I." from military usage, basically "Government Issue." GM would mean something like "Government Issue Mobile Suit." Or "Goverment Model" could also work.

Great work, I didn’t know the meaning behind any of the model numbers lol and here I thought I was a true gundam geek. But it makes a lot of sense well sometimes, but it helps to understand this to also help create your own custom mobile suit model designation. Also want to add a sort of obscure micro question, were the white dingo team’s classic dark gray colors just specific only to their team? Or we’re all Australian EFF mobile suit teams that color?

In old TV commercials, 1980~1983. They are not so sure on calling a Gundam GunPla as RX-78. So this RX seems to be mostly a post production insertion, instead part of the original 1979 TV series. Gundam actually became more popular after its Tractor Series, Macross debuted in 1982.

My friend and I came up with a short but our own 'head canon' name for the letters. Earth Federation is done like the us military, where R is the designation for Robot/Robotic Frame or Roamer and or is the Arbitrary letter they picked like how the M-16 or M1 Abrams, where the M really dosent mean anything, its just a way for them to differentiate them from the M series of ground vehicles, though most people stick to robot for simplicity sake. However the other letters DO mean something for example. RX-78 means R (model) eXperimental model/production year of 78 and any numbers after that such as - 02 would mean an addendum to the original model. Like how the M1A1 is an upgraded Abrams. Now here is where it gets fun. The GM designation was chosen based on information we learned about japan. Japan likes to identify produced machines by type or origin. So we came up with a nifty solution. RGM-79 means 'R(Model) Gundam Mass-Production Type, because its a simplified version of the Gundam prototype RX model, and thusly got a number higher, this also applies to their RGM series because their base was the R(Model) Experimental Gundam. So the rough translation on paper would be RGM-79 or Model Gundam Mass-Production Type 79. This extends to 0083 as well with GP-01 being Gundam Project Model 01 an improved model of the original RX-78 line upgraded and improved with post/late war technology. Zeon is easy, MS stands for Mobile Suit (because it was meant for space use, so it was a kind of space suit.) and MSM means mobile suit marine, or mobile suits modified for use underwater instead of space or on land.

For the D-50C it could be the case of using a manufacturer industrial designation in lieu or pending a formal one. An example would be the Type-62 used by the PLA/PRC which has an alternative designation of WZ-131. Becuase the suit is used by ECOAS they might be using a industrial designation as a cover and to aide in deniability. Naturally everyone knows its a Federation mobile suit but because it doesnt have an offical Feddie designation it cant be easily tied to them. Or due to the machine being manufactured by SNRI it could also just be an in house name that made its way to general use. Some guns and regular equipment today have some pretty funny acronyms or names for weird, dumb, or lazy reasons.
