I still have his autograph to this day. Its laminated. It says, 'To my Pal Matt. Christopher Reeve.' It was a real blessing to have that.

When I was a kid I remember watching it repeatedly on HBO thinking man it's kind of cool but I wish there was a way to skip to the end! This was before I knew who Brando was! Now since buying the video I still watch the whole sequence up to when Ka-El flies out for the first time of the FOS! Donner at the end of this sequence just lived up to so many boys imaginations! Finally after decades after the character's conception having the greatest superhero of all time fly out of that scene and into our hearts!!!

The symbols are very cool in this scene. Brando comes in with the mask, and as the Father symbol, imparts the knowledge of mankind and the universe in 5 minutes that supposedly lasts for 13 years. When the impartation is complete, Kal-El understands his immortality, and the powers manifest. Superman comes in like a modern angel ready to fight for truth...justice....very cool stuff.

All he said was that Brando was better...that's a subjective argument...this isn't about which is a more faithful version, but which version any individual happens to like better. Both Crowe and Brando are superb actors, but I would say that Brando's vocal talents and presence are slightly more impactful than Crowe's. Also, there's a distinct difference in the content of their speeches: Crowe's Jor-El says humanity "will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall..." which is a pretty sad picture of humanity, whereas Brando's version says "They are a good people...they wish to be..." which presents a kinder picture of us. This is just one example of the major philosophical differences between the two films...one says "You will save this race because they are stupid and weak, but they have potential", the other says "these are good people, but they could be better, and I'm sending you to help them." Both are valid interpretations of Superman...it's a question of which one works better, and that question is debatable.

@JLC31383 He's literally taken away on a journey into another realm where he becomes the student to his father. So in fact, his question of "who am I?" is a loaded question. He essentially takes the masculine journey / warrior training the way Bruce Wayne did or Luke Skywalker. Or even the hobbits in Lord of the Rings. In each of the cases there is a father figure answering the question of "who am I" for the 'son' and providing knowledge, discipline and virtue.

Now that I'm older I gotta think damn, imagine, twelve years will pass when I get out of here? Not only will my Earth mother be sick wondering if I am dead but I'm not gonna live experience my twenties! But according to Superman returns... He did plant his seed in the body of a certain young woman.. her name is Lois Lane. Richard White may very well have been the boy's Earth father... But as she would later discover, her son was given to her by Kal-El of Krypton. To be honest I believe Jor-El and Lara would be very happy that their Son head continue the family line on Earth.

I wonder what exactly Clark Kent was doing while he was in training to become the Man of Steel during those 12 years. He enters that area as an 18-year-old boy, and then he leaves as a 30-year-old man by flying away for the first time as Superman. I always was left wondering if he actually spent a decade plus two more years doing everything he needed to- or did he just listen to what we only saw and then discover 12 years had actually passed after the speech he was given by his father was over?

This was the scene I always went back to in the movie; it defined the whole theme of the character, not to mention the Judeo-Christian undertones and of course Brando's excellent acting. I loved that they restored some of the Jor-El footage in the Donner recut of Superman II as well as the new Superman Returns movie.

If you watch the behind the scenes on the DVD Richard Donner says it was Christopher Reeves, and they said they didn't even expect him to do it and the entire film crew cheered after he did it, and I think you can kind of tell it's him anyway, he did his own flying in every other scene, why not this one.

I figured it was due to the effect of time dilation from interstellar travel causing Superman's relative local time to pass much more slowly in comparison to Krypton, meaning that even though to Clark he's 18 years old, an observer on Krypton would've experienced it as many thousands of years.

Christopher Reeves Superman was perfection. As time goes by when we see new versions of Superman we appreciate more how good Christopher Reeve was and the cast back then, including Brando. It was a different era in a different time. The problem with new versions of Superman they tried to mimic Christopher Reeves style, including Clark Kent. It never worked because they are not Christopher Reeve. Christopher Reeve never copied George Reeves before him but they both share similarities in terms of fate, George Reeves died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at age 45 and Christopher Reeve was paralysed from spinal cord injury from an accident. That being said, when we compare two of the greatest Batman’s of all time, Michael Keaton and Christian Bale, both their films and their trilogies were very different but we’re still Batman. If we are to see a new Superman, it is important it is entirely original and doesn’t set out to copy and paste from the past. But that doesn’t mean making Superman with a dark streak like Batman is because that’s not how I see Superman. Although, like anybody he has his moments when he loses track of his purpose and falls into darkness, but his will and sense of justice brings him back to the light.

Why was Clark Kent called ‘Jonathan Clark Kent’ in Superman I? Clark was Martha Kent’s maiden name in the comic book - and much later in the ‘Smallville’ series as well. Jonathan Kent was his adoptive Earth-father.

@hottgirl924 Well, this is the only story I know of where Clark Kent disappears for over a decade and reappears as Superman. I guess that was their way of saying the Man of Steel is who he actually is and Clark Kent is just someone he pretends to be so he can work a job and spend time as a regular human. Most other versions have him actually go to college and spend years studying so he can be prepared for his journalism career after he graduates. I have seen all live-action stories for Superman.

Grows up with special abilities and realizes he is meant to use them. At age 18, goes into the wilderness to find out who he is. 12 years later (age 30, around the same age as Jesus was when he began his ministry) he goes out into the world. Jor-El as the God/Father figure This is per the MOVIE version of Superman. The original creators (Siegel and Shuster) were Jewish and saw him as more of a Moses or Samson figure than a Christ allegory.

Jor- El knew the earths sun would give his son the advantage he needed to survive. His intellect was far superior than any earthlings. He would look like one of them but he would not be one of them. His father felt his son would best benefit by comming to earth.If look at the beginning of the movie Jor El s wife questioned the reason of sending Kel- El to earth because the people of earth are so primitive. thounds of years behind Krypton. this is other reasons why he was sent to earth.
