Surfing saved my life. I was always depressed as a person unless I had competitive things like footy and skating. That got harder as I got older, I'm 38 now and started surfing 3 months ago, been in water everyday and am progressing very quickly.. did an air today :)

I've skated for almost 30 years for the same reason...unfortunately I don't live anywhere near the ocean else I'd surf, too. Just watching it relaxes me, I can only imagine how great it would feel catching a wave.

That's an amazing story cause you're clearly progressing fast, but I suffer from a similar thing, and surfing is just masking it for now.. I'd suggest trying therapy or something to help relieve the recurring depression. Wishing you all the best.

I've been surfing for coming up on 30 years, my daughter started surfing last year, this is the first summer she's been surfing 100% on her own (no boosting into waves, paddling herself out etc.) She's now working on progressing her skills and watching these videos with her is a HUGE help (sassy pre-teens don't always want to listen to Dad) Great job with your content! Thank you!

I live a few houses from the beach in NJ. I love the ocean love the beach. I’ve been so terribly depressed and have found it hard to find joy in much these days. I haven’t been on a surf board in over 10 years. I just went and bought a new board. I’m excited and nervous but it’s great to feel something other than blank. Im looking forward to this new hobby and chapter.

As someone who just moved coastal and is learning to surf (at 29 years old) for the first time, this is soooo helpful haha! The paddling strength...yeah that's put me in my place but I'm getting up near to that 85% of the time on a pretty small board (borrowed) so I think it's time to buy a board thats actually suitable for my level and keep nailing the basics! First of all: Your How To's on how to rip and on your channel are awesome. Keep the good work up! What I'd love to see is more content for landlocked surfers! There are so many of us and every one of us is trying hard to get prepared for the next surf trip. All with the goal to be able to enjoy our short time in the waves to the fullest. But there is not so much content on all those surf-channels that can help us... What are good exercises we can do with our surf skate? How can we exercise certain maneuvers on it? How can we simulate certain sections of a wave? What are good strength and flexibility exercises? Would be great to see some more of this stuff =)

Hey, fellow Midwesterner in the same boat, but at least have the fall waves of Lake Michigan. In my down time, push ups are key. I also "swim" with 10lb rubber exercise band 3x a week. With my hands in each handle and my foot on the middle part of the band, swim by bringing your hands arms up high over head like swimming. Immensely helpful in bringing power and endurance in the paddle!

I find steep waves are easier to pop up on because in the waves lately they’re small so to get the board to drop when you pop up is ideal. But then I got the problem of not being able to stand fully so crouched does work.

Thank you so very much! I've surfed for almost 50 years now and when ever I'm asked "could you teach me to surf" I would say something like , I can tell you what not to do and what to do when when were in the water but there's no short cutting experience... Try fail or rip and repeat repeat repeat. It has always been difficult to explain in words. Now I have twin boys and they want to surf with me but get frustrated with my lack of teaching credentials in the line up. The way you explain these basic skills is nothing short of brilliance. Great advice, I especially liked you informing beginners that it’s actually easier to stand up on an unbroken wave, but a broken wave takes less skill. I’ve seen many beginners give up because they think that if they can’t stand up on a little white water wave, then how are they going to cope with a 3 footer 🌊. 👍

Great video and really helpful and clear guidance. I'd love to see more surfer's POV shots when explaining wave positioning. The problem with camera shots from the beach or go pro footage that's pointing at the surfer when he's on the wave is that it all looks so different and feels so alien when you're actually there yourself. Unless you've got someone filming you, it's harder to tell if you're in the right positions on the wave. Subscribed

Love to watch such helpful surf video in details. I do wonder if you can make a video for on-land excercise such as poping up or muscle training for biginners? Anyway, thanks a lot for your work!!

Thanks Kale, i’m in Mississippi, USA so not much surfing available. I’m trying to fresh up on all my basics before headed to the gulf coast of Florida this weekend. I doubt they’ll be any sets but I’ll be as ready as I can. Peace 😎✌️

Would love tips on how to paddle to the back on a foamy! I'm still riding a 7ft foamie but starting to get out the back more in bigger waves, which ain't terribly easy!

There is no greater feeling!! Thank you so much for your videos. i've taken up surfing during the most difficult time in my personal life later in life...it's the only thing I've tried that makes me feel myself and happy again for the hours after. I was lucky to grow up swimming and body surfing in WA, so I had a lot of wave knowledge built in (which I didn't know)...where I currently live in NZ is learners paradise. using your videos and doing lots of surf skating and surfing I have gone from a learner in the white water to being out the back and doing my first cut backs on the face of a wave in 6 months.....Thanks heaps.

My biggest issue as a beginner is perfectly demonstrated at 4:17 ; i can stand up and ride in smaller waves on the big beginner foam boards, but when i try and surf bigger waves like the one at this timestamp, exactly what happens to her happens to me: the foam board nose submerges, and the board sinks into the wave and then gets ripped out from under you and spat out. What are the best ways to overcome the nose of the beginner foam bords from sinking into the bigger waves? Watching more advanced surfers on hardboards, they seem to effortlessly drop down across the wave ; is it just the nature of the beginner foam bords to sink at the nose because of their size? Or is it that beginners like me (and the woman in the video) put too much weight on the front of the board/dont cut across in a horizontal direction enough?

Fantastic info. As a windsurfer i'm trying to get (better) into wave sailing. I believe your video will help me a lot as well! Especially the footwork, vision and low hips help me understand now why it is probably a lot better to keep my boom at a lower position in wave sailing unlike other conditions and why it is important that the footstraps are further apart as to bump and jump conditions and do my physical exercises. Thanks a lot for making this video. As a follow up i will need a video in combination with a sail ;)

Oh and be pragmatic to avoid a lot of frustration. If you’re taking off and can’t pop up then quickly decide that that’s ok and trim perhaps in knees or drop knees. Doing this over and over whilst trying and of course developing the pop up is cleverer, easier (believe it or not) and will help you be more positive about. So if the pop up fails make an instant check, more often than not you’re trimming anyway and just enjoy it. We all fall off. Lifeguards do and so do pros.

Such quality in the way you relay this information!! So practical, straightforward and easily applicable. I think that many beginners forget to use their intuition and senses, its such an intricate thing to surf, you must be in tune with yourself and the motion of the ocean!!

One of your best, if not THE best, vids Kale 🥬 👏🏼 A lot of crucial info packed in there, but at my stage as a ‘mature’ (old 😆) intermediate but with some fundamentals to fix, all your content was spot on. Beautifully shot and presented; great testimony to your film-making. The ‘guest’ speakers were an excellent addition! 🤙🏼
