My grandfather was a kali master. He trained me on his farm. Punching and kicking banana trees to desensitize the hands and feet to punching woods and making me do hard work. He said working will shape my body so that I can start training. Then the sticks, making the hands less sensitive helped because my grampa hit my hands a thousand times. It hurts but not that much. Until today, I never beat him once. Even if he's 79 at a height of 4.9 and took me down on a tackle hand to hand.

Best of luck in your training :) I've done martial arts for the past seven or so years now, although a bad injury that resulted in a disability has made training very difficult. I'm taking up Kali as soon as I can, because it's one of the few martial arts that I feel I'm still capable of, and it's just fascinating to me on top of that. kali is not a martial art for self defense ...it is a martial art for offense. sticks are use for training only. Kali is use by marine soldiers in real fight using jungle knives, or bolos as an offense/ to kill their enemies.

When I was young back in the 80s I had a fight with a SIGA in Tondo. Apparently, he was a martial artist. I ended the fight within a few seconds. I shot both of his legs. Apparently, he is still alive and never to set his foot in Tondo again (no pun intended)

This is not eskrima.. FMA does not have a face, counting, and stance. FMA was used only for two purposes.. To neutralize or to kill the opponent with continuous movement like a swift.. FMA is a way of thinking.. It is used not for sports.. And definitely not for the one who cant kill with faint of heart

I practiced this in Pinas years before I went to U.S. never braged about it. But when I came to the U.S. bullies sometimes forced me to pull it off. Now I am being targeted covertly. Being harassed and stalked just coz they're weak and cowards. Research organized stalking.

Sadly Filipino Kali (Arnis) is a dying martial art. Malaysian and Indonesian variations are going strong.

No it's not. It's still going strong. The Philippine army still uses it. Ts taught in self defense all over the world, specifically how to defend a knife assault. And it's used in movies to train stuntmen. Altho I don't think Silat is well known. I can only think of Muay Thai being in MMA all over the world. But that's it.

@@randomrealistictone2231 Yes but in those communities only. The martial art is rarely thought in Philippine dojos and fighting gyms. It is even rarely recognized or mentioned in Philippines Arm Forces, they just train as part of their self defense unlike Krav Maga of the Israeli Arm Forces that is duly recognized as the military's martial art form and became the avenue for it's popularity that many people around the world became interested in practicing the martial art. Muay Thai, Karate, Boxing and other fighting styles are often showcased in movies unlike Kali that it is just used in fighting scenes without the viewers knowing that it is Kali/Arnis. Just like Muay Thai of Thailand, Boxing is the most popular fighting style in the Philippines bar none. When a foreigner/tourist visits the Philippines, he/she can immediately see boxing gyms everywhere and if he/she does not search harder, Kali/Arnis will not be discovered and true Filipino Kali masters are already rare gems unlike boxing couches that are everywhere in the country. There is an international Silat tournament being held every now and then. This is just my opinion, with my observation and if the trend continues, there is a danger of the Martial Arts to go extinct or just a novelty in the fight world.

@@kevin080592 Every traditional martial arts are deadly...those practiced in tournaments are just watered down and given rules to follow. Examples are boxing from rough and tumble that is executed with bare knuckle punches, eye gouging and bitting. Muay Thai (Thailand) and Lethwei (Myanmar) are two different martial arts from neighboring countries but the rules applied in both martial arts is the Muay Thai rules but traditiinally two are similar when used in real combat historically head but and bare knuckle with Muay Thai moves are the way.

Kali is too deadly for sports.. it's meant for offense and can cause death I think that's why it's not publicly taught. The best defense is to avoid conflict

there will always situations where you have to or force to deal with conflict either through work, conflicting ideas etc... in more extreme cases where it's a life and death scenario it's better than you know how to deal with it especially against someone who has an intent to kill or maim and you can't just avoid that to deal and to protect yourself is to make sure he can't harm you or kill you by disarming or disable him killing him is the last resort but unnecessary most of the time just make sure you stop him from chasing you and hurt you that's it.

Yes, very effective when I encountered series of actual street combats with murderer and trouble maker gang in my younger years. Constant practice is a must to maintain muscle reflexes and quickness in movements. Very good in empty handed fight against an armed with sharp weapon attacker. This system of fighting techniques is superior to neutralize 10 attackers. Strong stamina and endurance is needed to survive. Techniques if without stamina and endurance will make you dead.

First off, congratulations! There's video of Guro Inosanto demonstrating Filipino Martial Arts at the Smithsonian in yt channel FightingHQ. I believe they have a place in the US where you can inquire. I'm not really sure if Guro Inosanto go to different parts of the US to demo. If I'm not mistaken, they have a training center there (or dojo, is that how they call it?).

I feel like is time for Kali to evolve. Learning the movements and techniques is nice. It feels like dribbling with a ball, or enhancing manual dexterity, being more aware about objects in hands and Body control. If some crazy fool runs at you with a knife, you will stil probably bleed out. Why not train 50% Dexterity and 50% crazy fool Situations. Last time i did this once in 15 attempts i managed a disarm with no injuries. Then again, a skater does how many...100 - 1000 Attempts to do a trick. So it is very much fun and wonderful what Escrima/ Arnis/ kali Schools train, but why not evolve one step further?

And in a smaller step, taking all the tiny key movements of a drill and include it in sparring step by step and vary from cautious sparring to 5 second sparrings. Could be a possibility. Evolution is hard to imagine it will look probably different.
