My grandfather was a kali master. He trained me on his farm. Punching and kicking banana trees to desensitize the hands and feet to punching woods and making me do hard work. He said working will shape my body so that I can start training. Then the sticks, making the hands less sensitive helped because my grampa hit my hands a thousand times. It hurts but not that much. Until today, I never beat him once. Even if he's 79 at a height of 4.9 and took me down on a tackle hand to hand.

Kali is beautiful to watch. I'm incorporating Kali for kids with our Kajukenpo Karate in our dojo. The kids LOVE the routines, and they learn to be facile with their first weapon. I find it also vastly improves their other Karate skills.

Yes, very effective when I encountered series of actual street combats with murderer and trouble maker gang in my younger years. Constant practice is a must to maintain muscle reflexes and quickness in movements. Very good in empty handed fight against an armed with sharp weapon attacker. This system of fighting techniques is superior to neutralize 10 attackers. Strong stamina and endurance is needed to survive. Techniques if without stamina and endurance will make you dead.

Best of luck in your training :) I've done martial arts for the past seven or so years now, although a bad injury that resulted in a disability has made training very difficult. I'm taking up Kali as soon as I can, because it's one of the few martial arts that I feel I'm still capable of, and it's just fascinating to me on top of that. Kali is too deadly for sports.. it's meant for offense and can cause death I think that's why it's not publicly taught. The best defense is to avoid conflict

there will always situations where you have to or force to deal with conflict either through work, conflicting ideas etc... in more extreme cases where it's a life and death scenario it's better than you know how to deal with it especially against someone who has an intent to kill or maim and you can't just avoid that to deal and to protect yourself is to make sure he can't harm you or kill you by disarming or disable him killing him is the last resort but unnecessary most of the time just make sure you stop him from chasing you and hurt you that's it.

First off, congratulations! There's video of Guro Inosanto demonstrating Filipino Martial Arts at the Smithsonian in yt channel FightingHQ. I believe they have a place in the US where you can inquire. I'm not really sure if Guro Inosanto go to different parts of the US to demo. If I'm not mistaken, they have a training center there (or dojo, is that how they call it?).

When I was young back in the 80s I had a fight with a SIGA in Tondo. Apparently, he was a martial artist. I ended the fight within a few seconds. I shot both of his legs. Apparently, he is still alive and never to set his foot in Tondo again (no pun intended)

I feel like is time for Kali to evolve. Learning the movements and techniques is nice. It feels like dribbling with a ball, or enhancing manual dexterity, being more aware about objects in hands and Body control. If some crazy fool runs at you with a knife, you will stil probably bleed out. Why not train 50% Dexterity and 50% crazy fool Situations. Last time i did this once in 15 attempts i managed a disarm with no injuries. Then again, a skater does how many...100 - 1000 Attempts to do a trick. So it is very much fun and wonderful what Escrima/ Arnis/ kali Schools train, but why not evolve one step further?

And in a smaller step, taking all the tiny key movements of a drill and include it in sparring step by step and vary from cautious sparring to 5 second sparrings. Could be a possibility. Evolution is hard to imagine it will look probably different.

Arnis kali saved my life and my school mates when we were in highschool some gangs or paternity hold grudges on us, they always wait on us to walk by in plaza and began following us mostly they're 5 to 4 people they dont have anything on them just bare handed. They first stood on my classmate to show their pride and punch him by surprise that's when i began to hit their member, one of them is seriously in pain so they began to run haha it was a funny story and the same time hilarious cause i still remember it, all thanks to my tutor or my master for teaching me the basics of Arnis kali art

This is not eskrima.. FMA does not have a face, counting, and stance. FMA was used only for two purposes.. To neutralize or to kill the opponent with continuous movement like a swift.. FMA is a way of thinking.. It is used not for sports.. And definitely not for the one who cant kill with faint of heart

May I add some additional info about our traditional form of fighting skills such as Kali/Arnis/Escrima better known now as FMA (Filipino Martial Arts). We must understand that Kali is an art of street fighting. Our ancestors used these techniques to depend and fight back any aggressors, may it local or from foreign country who wants to invade their land. It is a dangerous form of martial arts using any kind of weapon. Anything a hand can grab can be used as a weapon, not only knives, long bolos, etc but even the body or hand of a person itself. It is a form of fighting skills for survival which becomes part of our culture. It is not something to show off inside the ring or arena but rather something that you can see most in any street fight/brawl. I may assume that this might be one of the reasons why some of the military institutions in America or other country uses these kind of fighting skills. It is more in reality combat techniques. I hope this may help you more understand. Thank you.

Actually what he probably meant is that regardless if you are armed or not, the movement stays the same. Ninjutsu and other arts on the other hand comprises of different martial arts that are unique on their own and can't translated the same way on other arts. For example the movement of Kendo (sword) is different to the movement of karate. That a sword man needs to learn karate in order to defend himself if he doesn't have a sword.

While there are arts out there that actively train in the use of weapons as well as bare-handed fighting, Kali seems to be the only one (that I'm aware of) in which the movements are one and the same, armed or unarmed. I also got the feeling that he meant that the moves from weapons to unarmed fighting also have a certain unbroken flow to them, making the transition from use of one to the other pretty much seamless as a result.
