Kalimba Basics: How to Make KALIMBA TABS from PIANO Music

It could work if the flat or sharp notes are the same throughout the whole song. For example, if there’s only F# (sharp) notes in the piece, this could still work if you retune the F keys on your kalimba to F# (this would make the kalimba into G major). However, if there are both F, and F# notes involved, this wouldn’t work. You could try to play it with out #, but the sound would be a bit off. If you really want to play songs that involved flats or sharp in C major, I would suggest you look into a chromatic kalimba.

Erlinda A.N. I usually use MuseScore to transpose the piano music to C major, then I use that as a reference to make Kalimba Tabs using the software KTabS. There are different styles of Tabs people use for Kalimba. Some use the ktabs, some use numbers, some like to use letters and some just use the piano sheet in C major. If really depends what on you prefer. Generally there are lots of different tutorials on KZbin as well for different songs.

I have a question, how do you figure out if the sheet music is in Major A, B, D, E, F or G? If the sheet music happens to be Major G, does it mean I have to tune the Kalimba to Major G or is there a way to change it to Major C? If it's not Major C, can your chart (thank you very much for sharing it!) still be used? Or it can't because it's only for Major C? Thank you very much.

Since I don’t know all the key signatures and if I want to know a key signature, I usually just google them, for example, if I see 3 ♭ (flat) symbols, then I would search 3 flats key. You can check out this page: musictheoryfundamentals.com/MusicTheory/keySignatures.php It shows a list of different key signatures. If the sheet music is in G major, what you can do is input all the notes in MuseScore (on the computer) and then transpose it to C. You probably can google on how to transpose keys, but I just found it easier for me to use MuseScore. By retuning the kalimba to G major probably would sound more like to the original piece compare to the one transpose it to C major. In terms of the chart I created, it’s for C major. However, if your kalimba is retuned to G major, you could still use it for G major in terms of the letter placement, but you would need to remember that the F keys would be F# instead for G major. Also if you are writing down numbers for a song, the numbers would be different compare to C major. It would start with G(1) A(2) B(3) C(4) D(5) E(6) F# (7), whereas C major would be C(1) D(2) E(3) F(4) G(5) A(6) B(7). If you are interested in a chart for G major, I probably can work on one this weekend. I hope this makes sense to you. :)

I know this is an old thread, but Musescore has a transpose function. If you are doing it manually, then you should look for a circle of fifths and draw it out. No sharps/flats in the key signature is Cmaj or Am. One sharp is Gmaj or Em, One flat is Fmaj or Dm. Now since you have the drawing that LC Kalimba shows on the video, you can find all the notes. For sharp keys, the note above the last sharp is the root note, so for Gmaj, the sharp is on the F line, that means all F's are sharp and the note above F# is G. For flat keys, the second from the end flat is the key, so with 2 flats, the first flat is Bb, therefore a 2 flat key is Bbmaj or Gm. To figure out whether the key is major or minor, can be complex, but a rule of thumb is the last chord in the song.

hmm... the easiest way is to transpose the song into C major on MuseScore. I don't think you can just transpose keys with # or b, you would transpose the whole song into the key that you want that doesn't have any sharp or flat notes.

You can transpose D major music into C major to play on a C major Kalimba, which I use the app MuseScore to help me. Or you can retune your Kalimba into D major from C, which you would tune the keys C into C♯, half note higher, this includes C4, C5 and C6, and the keys F into F ♯, this includes F4 and F5. I hope this helps. What song are you trying to play?

Well, if one song has notes that are lower than C4 and higher than E6, then it would not work well on Kalimba. If the notes are higher, it might still work if you are able to move all those notes one octave lower if they are still within the range of Kalimba notes. Same with lower notes, to move them one octave higher. If you really want to play that song, could potentially look into 21 key kalimba or Kalimba that has lower notes. I hope this answer your question.

You can transpose songs to C major to play on your Kalimba or retune your Kalimba to play the songs. Personally I like to just transpose songs to C Major as I don’t need to retune my Kalimba.

I can help with that. First, the piece needs to be transposed to C for a typical kalimba. Then the guitar chords may need to be simplified, you aren't necessarily going to be able to play a 7b5 chord on kalimba. The upper most notes on guitar sheet music is usually the melody. You may need to lower the octaves or raise them. A typical 22 fret guitar in standard tuning has a range from E2 to D6 and a 17C kalimba has a range from C4 to E6.

Leah Herrell I don’t really convert Tabs regularly, so this would take me a long time to do as I have other things going on as well. It probably would be faster to do this yourself, plus this would help you remember the Tabs better as you convert the Tabs. Is there any part you are confused about?
