KALIMPONG- The Good & The Bad

Finally a mature, thoughtful, and educative video. I was in Kalimpong during the early 80s. Some of my experiences then: a) A small restaurant near Kanchan cinema sold a plate of non-veg momo and a bowl of non-veg noodles for 50 paisa each! b) The Swiss dairy farm next to St. Augustine's School exported cheese and lollipops to Hong Kong, UK, Macau. c) A small town with 15-20 schools that has kept the Scottish bagpipe legacy on till today d) Prince of Wales, George Mallory, Lady Mountbatten, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Indira Gandhi, HH Dalai Lama visited Kalimpong e) During 1959-65, the CIA, CBI, ROC, RAW, SB, CPP spies in KPG, following the exodus of Tibetans and Chiang Kai-shek supporters into KPG/India f) The first Chinese school founded in Kalimpong/India, later converted to Jubilee High school g) Best Vermicelli noodles (phing) exported to Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim and other Indian cities h) Scores of tarpaulin bag shops/factories that had tourists/jawans from all over India coming to Kalimpong to purchase. Good Old Days!

Thank you so much for your detailed comment. There were quite a few things in there that was so enlightening. Old stories of our little kalimpong is something that the current age of children do not know anything about and will never know if nobody tells them. I believe that if people do not know their history, they have nothing to hold on too, which means they will not have much pride in it and If they don't have pride on it, they will not have a strong affinity to take care of it enough.

A few additions that comes to mind: i) 15-20 Hakka Chinese establishments, mostly shoe stalls and restaurants. Kalimpong boots were so popular j) Influenced by Duran Duran band (1980), the teens/youngsters dressed in suits, sporting trendy hairstyles. Youngsters had panache k) Kalimpong was a hippie town in the 1970s. Hard Rock and Psychedelic music reached Kalimpong before rest of India. I was introduced to Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, CSNY, CCR, Deep Purple, Led Zep, Frank Zappa, Grand Funk in Kalimpong. Nepali music was at its zenith too l) Dr. Graham's Homes boarding school comprised of several cottages that had names. It was like a precursor to Hogwarts(Harry Potter) m) Tibetan refugees entering Kalimpong used silver coin called Srang that was accepted as currency by merchants n) No LPG gas those days. Hiking to Reli Khola, eating 'tarul, roti, aludum,' for lunch and carrying dry logs all the way home for fuel was fun

Hi, well made video. Was born & brought up in kalimpong. I live in Chennai now. I'm glad you mentioned the good & the bad sides! Feel sad when I see the crowds, squalor , countless vehicles etc. The town I grew up in was a sleepy, beautiful green place. But the good still remains. Nothing can take away the beauty of the Himalayas, daras, kholas, etc. And the Haat was a great favourite always.. Thanks for a great honest take on our beautiful hometown!

Well made video. I studied in DGH and went to kalimpong after 35 years. I was disappointed at the dirt and filth around and couldn't find the kalimpong of my childhood. However I enjoyed the momo. Forgot to get into larks shop.

Very humble & nice video.Made me nostalgic as i studied for past 7 years from1998-2004 at St.Philomena Girls high school. Beautiful video bhai., I am a long time resident of kalimpong , but some places were also unknown to me, like the amdo restaurant and the book cafe. I am in service and get posted all over West bengal, but i always come back. i can never describe what it means to be from Kalimpong. It just feels right. It is sad that nowadays the youth are moving out for jobs and traditional arts are dying out. But it is great to see so many talented individuals cropping up from our very own kalimpong. I had visited Pujey dhara before. thankfully they have put up railings, i see. even me being pahar ko keti felt quite dizzy looking down at the beautiful view.. keep posting and good luck.

Finally, I got nice video featuring Kalimpong in details, both good & bad, but interestingly I never knew Kuzay Dara & Ancient Church which described Jesus as Monk. Though it's my maternal home & spend my childhood there so i'm emotionally connected with Kalimpong. Thanks for your latest information. I suggest you to go Lava, Kaffer, Reshap, Gumba Dara, Pedong, Samthar etc. all are inside Kalimpong district only, so you'll find historic places & popular tourist destinations. Can't add value to your video (and therefore I should shut up!). Spent several years in the late 50s passing through the town - initially by train (and stopping for lunch once at the railway station) and then mostly by road. Spent one summer for TWO MONTHS at the summer bungalow (again, don't want to drop names but it was a famous place then and probably something else now). Consider the town to be idyllic for an enjoyable extended vacation. Thanks for bringing back the memories. Let us hope the town continues to proper in the best possible way. Your efforts are enviable.

Momo or Momos both are correct depending on how u put it. Dumpling plural is dumplings. If I am not wrong momo is a tibtein word so how can a non Tibeteins set a rule how it should be called. Btw as a northeast love to visit sikkim & neighbouring places.

Yes the word is of Tibetan origin and when a plate of momo is served, it is already served in a plural form, that is, more than one piece. Its like saying pastas for pasta. Momos is an anglcized version of the same, meaning we have been modifying the word because we are putting in a plural version to the actual word as the word momo is not of English origin.

In June this year I was travelling from Lolaygaon to Takdah via Kalimpong. I thought of stopping somewhere in Kalimpong to have lunch and look around. But sadly I was not able to find a single parking space and had to hit the road towards Teesta Bazaar. The authorities should and must look into such issues. The same is with Darjeeling. This way people are going to lose interest in these beautiful towns. And your video hits the correct spots.

True! if your are a non-local it becomes even more difficult. I know that this is kinda the scene everywhere but if we don't start thinking about it, it will ultimately lead to a total nightmare like Darjeeling.

@@silkrouteproductions I purposely hired a car to take us to Darjeeling from Takdah. The very thought of spending useless hours in a jam and burning precious fuel prompted me to make the decision. Darjeeling has seriously become overcrowded. I think these places should become permit based for tourists to regulate the number of people coming to the hills.

Great history, culture, and kind and friendly locals…. I visited KPG in January 2023 after about 15 years. Disappointed to see the town ruined with so much trash everywhere. As much as I want to visit often and perhaps even buy property there, filth around neighborhoods in the town and lack of civic sense among its people have become a real turn off for me, for now. Perhaps I will come around to loving trashy towns one day or Kalimpong will correct its course and return to its former glory. Please keep the town clean, will ya?

For every 30 tourist vehicles that go toward Gangtok, 1 travels to Kalimpong. What will entice tourists to visit Kalimpong? Delo Park is the main attraction? Paragliding is not for everyone. Durpin Monastery is ok. This is the age of social media. People like places that are Instagram and crowd friendly. Gangtok has MG road; Darjeeling has Chowrasta; Namchi bazaar. Kalimpong could make the Main road from Dumbar Chowk to Bhanu Bhakta a "Walking Street" like MG Road. It would be the epicenter and tremendously boost local economy.

@@gromit576 This idea of Main Rd...the stretch that you have mentioned, has been talked of many times in certain meetings and has been visioned but has only remained a vision. Nobody really has really done anything or made an effort on the same. Like, a multi-storied parking at the main kalimpong motor stand was also talked of. But these projects, have all been talk & visions as of now. There was also a foundation stone laid for a ropeway from Delo to Relli some years back. But it is still only the foundation stone as of now.

The problems in the hills . The management and people entirely depend on Nature , utilizing it to the fullest BUT never give anything back. hardly any maintenance and development too. The budget goes nowhere but in the pockets.
