The Flare Gun has gotta be one of my favorite weapons in the game, it requires you to either set up a debuff at close range with your primary or land 2 shots at a distance. There’s a reason why a lot of people respect it I feel. Unlike most crits a crit flare can be a finisher but it doesn’t kill instantly due to the base damage being 30 and thus the crit damage is 90. It’s good as a finisher but lacks the ability to breach thresholds unless you’re actively in the fight.
@Mega_idk Жыл бұрын
It also helps that being set on fire is usually a warning sign on it's own. Aside from the fact that you're passively taking damage you're also vulnerable to a flare or axtinguisher. Staying in or running from a fight while on fire are decisions the player gets to make, both with their own consequences if the player succeeds or fails with their chosen decision.
@Mantafirefly10 ай бұрын
It also means that fire damage isn't just a boring bit of delayed damage. You're now wounded and 90 damage + a burn refresh suddenly matters a lot. Stack that with the fact that fire can be ended sooner or even extended (Flares deal 7.5 secs of fire, max cap is 10), and you have a more interesting mechanic than it could've been.

Gonna disagree on the Frontier Justice - it does change your mindset by incentivizing you less to protect your gun or to intentionally destroy and rebuild when given the chance, in order load up on crits to defend yourself better with your smaller clip. And even with those crits, you're still just an engineer whose gun was destroyed, so it's not terribly punishing for the enemy to play as they usually do.
@aiyowei187 Жыл бұрын
Seconding this, i think that letting your sentry die as engineer does count as “weird shit,” that could reward crits, even if its just the boring “do what youre class not suppose to” weird shit.
@korikitsune4314 Жыл бұрын
I am gonna disagree with you on this one. While yes it does incentive different play for those with the confidence to try it. It just as often screws over players who can take a sentry nest down by letting the Engie who should be defenseless dump triple damage into you for your trouble. Spies especially have this bad because of how much they struggle to take down a sentry nest at times only to die even quicker because of the Frontier Justice. It doesn't do anything to punish turtling as always and simply can be used as a "my sentry finally went down lemme just kill whoever did that and start rebuilding"
@ShakerSilver Жыл бұрын
@@korikitsune4314 Except if you're playing with it while turtling, you're going to want to keep your sentry alive as long as possible and thus you'll just have a worse shotgun for self-defense for longer periods.
@korikitsune4314 Жыл бұрын
@@ShakerSilver Its not a smart choice for a turtling shotgun. I will agree with that. But it is an annoying one for the opponent because once that sentry does go down suddenly the engie has (potentially) 10+ crits to dump into anyone who was involved in taking down said nest. Its a similar feeling to engaging a Medic/Sniper in close range and getting one tapped because a melle crit. Its a situation where the class should be at disadvantage but instead they suddenly delete you.

11:45 “Could interact in ways that are fair and interesting.” Unless it’s the spy vs pyro matchup in which case you get fucked over for being within a 5 mile radius of the pyro. If he has a dust particle land on the left mouse button spy is basically dead on the spot due to the 1.5-5 seconds of afterburn while cloaked (3-10 sec without cloak) and it being so easy to apply. The only time the matchup is somewhat balanced and fair is when the pyro is running the Dragon’s Fury, in which case it becomes a somewhat fair matchup because they can’t just lawnmower the entire fucking battlefield and get free spy kills. The matchup between the two is so one sided that you as a pyro can catch out spies by complete accident constantly. Since afterburn lasts so long and is so visible, it takes nothing short of a spy-cicle charge, immediate conveniently placed health pack, even more conveniently placed medic assuming you have one, dead ringer usage, or kunai backstab to stop the spy from being dead within 5 seconds.

TF2 players can't decide if random crits are a gamebreaking mechanic or if "no random crits" is a negligable downside
@kalukagamingfellaguy Жыл бұрын
When they happen they're extremely powerful, but the inconsistency of them occuring makes it so that "no random crits" isn't a meaningful downside. These aren't mutually exclusive, and in the video (that you didn't watch) I even stated that the inability to rely on random crits is a contributor to their weak design. Also that doesn't work as red text if people have the option to play on servers without random crits where those weapons become upgrades over stock.
@shoelace5977 Жыл бұрын
removing the no random crits downside imo only makes weapons OP in specific cases, like when...: 1)the weapon already has a method of getting garanteed crits, which would for instance let a spy two-tap a soldier to death with only some luck 2)the weapon is a sword, as demoknight has really easy methods of getting close to people, melee crit rates are dangerously high and should not be given to a primary/primary type weapon, the swords often have snowball abilities, making the knight even more dangerous, and shields already gives theese melees garanteed crits ( see point 1 ) imo i would gladly give spy knives random crits to accomedate for the fact they get failstabs on the most random of times, but i would stop using the ambassador if it got random crits
@Nickton123 ай бұрын
@@kalukagamingfellaguy I really enjoy random crits, and while they've never really influenced ranged gameplay beyond going "Oh okay that was a crit I guess", they absolutely have an effect on melee. A lot of risky melee plays just evaporate if you never crit and always know the best you get is 65 damage. Hell, on average, even with the lowest crit chance, no random crits is almost a 30% damage reduction on average, even at just base crit chance, let alone with the really steep scaling melee gives you. Imagine joining a server and it just says every melee weapon with random crits has its damage lowered by 30%, and they tell you "Yeah this doesn't really affect the balance." I think random crits could be removed from ranged attacks and have no real effect on the game or its balance, but melee crits should stay no matter what. I was really happy when a lot of the bots were cleansed from casual, since it meant I got to play with random crits again after being stuck on community servers with random crits forced off. It was actually fun to try meleeing someone and have that tension as they try to melee me back, instead of them just tanking 65 to shoot me for 110. Much less egregiously, I also think its disingenuous to pretend turning off bullet spread for shotguns doesn't effect balance when its been shown that doing so gives much tighter cones of fire. That said, I doubt too many scouts are winning that many more fights just because their cone is half the size it would otherwise be.

What I find weird about TF2 is that crits are generally hard to get. You can either get a headshot with specific weapons as sniper or spy, you can get kritzkrieged by a medic, or you can hit an enemy with certain status effect like jarate, water, or fire with specific weapons to get them. They require specific interactions and often require setup or teamwork. Even the frontier justice, which is arguably OP, requires a lot of setup to get crits. You have to build a sentry, repair it while it racks up kills, and then it has to be destroyed before you get your crit shots. If your sentry dies and you only get 1 or 2 crits, its not going to be very impactful, and if you get a lot of crits stacked up, you can still get instagibbed by half the classes in the game because engineer without his sentry is very weak. Or you can play phlog. That is the exception. Net getting airblast doesnt nearly make up for the massive damage increase with basically 0 setup. Most buffs only give mini crits. This makes crits actually impactful and justifies the 3x damage multiplier. And then someone decided to enable random crits on casual for some reason, which completely invalidates this part of the game that was designed very carefully to not completely overshadow the rest of the game. If it was random mini crits instead of random crits, it would still be random, which I dont like, but it would at least be somewhat in line with the rest of the game design.

Banners are jsut better then what Overwatch got for ultimates. They are strong and can influence the game, but they aren't "press this to wipe whole enemy team" kind of good.

Personally I enjoy the risk-reward of pulling out a melee weapon as a “last resort” with a 1/3rd chance to kill or badly injure the opponent with the trade off of next to no range. Meaning you either have to sneak up on them, ambush them, or rely on them being an idiot and charging at you. (Like say a cocky scout chasing you down before you smack them around the corner with an Uber-saw crit.) Excluding the Scotsman skullcutter since demo has a charge that mostly nullifies the downsides while having increased range. The occasional crossbow crit I don’t mind either. But killing like half the enemy team *only* because I got lucky and not because I took a risk or displayed some great marksmanship leaves me feeling empty inside.

I dont know man, people can cry about this topic all they want, thats not the problem, the problem is that this game did something different and people want to change it at its core. I understand that dying to a crit can be frustrating but, guess what? Its a game about winning or loosing, you gotta lose sometimes and thats okay. A lot of people get OBSTREPOROUS when they lose, especially when it is for reasons they cannot control and i understand it VERY WELL, but they dont make use of this and they even take it with them for the rest of the day, not allowing themselves for that catharsis and thus creating a problem in their life. All im saying is "come on, you gotta love it!", especially when you are playing CASUAL, and if you really got a problem with it, thats ok, its an old source game, theres custom community servers everywhere with their niche communities like the one from that popular tf2 engineer main, theres other games too, theres also other games made in the same engine that could behave differently, but its not the same, i like to hear this silly characters maim themselves in ridiculous combat as much as any tf2 lover and crits are simply how their world behaves, one may not like bears but we cant be going around making them extinct! I havent seen this video to completion (i stopped at 6:09 for context i guess ) and i probably wont stay for the conclusion (no hate, its not a bad video or anything, i personally think you´re pretty good at this! im just not in this mood rn :3) but ive seen a lot of these with the pass of time and i reached the conclusion that sometimes you cant change stuff, but you can adapt and thats a quality you can use videogames to train yourself with (or not, idk). If anything, crits are the most realistic aspect of a game where you can rocket jump, in real life it is estimated that half or maybe a little more of the total casualties where from artillery fire but im not gonna say "Skill issue💀" to those who fell, RIP. Anyways, for whoever out there, ty for reading allat, i really needed to relax after a tense situation and maybe this is useful to u, maybe it entertained u, gave u insight, etc, you can be angry too maybe idk, slay queen. Random crits were put in the game because "critical hits" are exciting to the player, and pseudo-randomizing them (increasing their chances the more damage they put out) helped try to incentivize players to try and stay alive longer. You also have to remember... this was the mindset from developers making a wacky cartoony game in 2005, releasing in 2007. There's no way this game's developers had the forethought how general players' skill floor would evolve today. Are random crits bad? Yes, at times. But also, when I'm in a random lobby and working my butt off to defend a point as demo... sometimes when you see a horde of players coming to kill you, and you let loose a crit sticky and clear the point... my god does it feel good to have some sort of reward for staying alive.

I like random crits a lot. It a great equalizer for dickheads like me who can’t stand using good weapons. As someone who’s bought a full prof-killstreak loadout for my knight cosplay scout, without random crits helping out, my three-rune-blade and flying guillotine strategy would go from mega underpowered to almost completely unusable. As lover of weak items please don’t take away one of my very few salvations. You meta using clones will never understand the feeling of getting a tryhard pyro on Hightower to ragequit using nothing but tiny specks of bleed damage and across the map random crit guillotine kills. Random crits can be turned into something that requires actual skill to use, you just have to not be boring and uncreative to find those ways

I agree that crits are intended to nudge players' thinking, but I don't think the intent is as you say. It's not to incentivize snowballing, it's to take away seriousness and investment in a life / killstreak. TF2 is a game intended for just having fun, it is not designed to be an E-Sport competitive game. Crits exist to add chaos and unpredictability to a match, thereby driving down the importance of winning one. Players will be plenty competitive on their own. Crits exist to forcefully curb this. That said, there are certain weapons that have random crits and in doing so break the balance of the class their on or the weapon itself. This should still be adjusted, but Crits should never be fully removed unless our priority is competition and fairness. Those two words only make up about a third of the essence of TF2.

You know, Crits are fun for just 2 reasons : -Hitscan crits can barelly kill more than 1 person, fair enough. It's just a simple kill out of luck. -But any AoE crits can be reflected, giving the pyro an advantage against an enemy that got that "High moment". Crits are both a fear factor and reward factor. If your enemies are doing too well, then they are gonna have more of those "high moments". If you happen to feel to confident because 1 guy who is playing a class you counter and that you're about to destroy them. This is a painfull reminder that you should have been more carefull and thinkfull about a better strategy. As a Scout main, rarelly do I die by unfair random crits : -When the enemy spams in a corner. -When a single crit sticky managed to somehow get near everyone in a corridor. -Or I got shot down by anyone using the shotgun or any scattergun variation during a duel. But If I play my cards right, Rarelly do those moments even come in to ruin my day. I simply don't let the time for my opponent to think before they die. Or if they use AoE I find a class counter. Spy doesn't fear random crits when unnoticed. Sniper is vulnerable but can still retreat when in need. Scout dodging can be quite Godly. And Pyro can LITTERALLY send back an attack that would have killed your entire team. The creativity is WAY more than what people think. You need to pay attention to every situation possible and what you could have done to prevent that : -Enemy is a tank at full health. >Don't ambush unless you can one-shot him. -A large group of enemy in a single area. >Don't try to push without uber or any forces to flank them. -You duel against the same class. >Be done with it quick, anytime lost due to single interaction is major in the grand scheme of things. Any time you die to a random crit shouldn't think : It's not my fault, they got lucky. You should ALWAYS think : How could have I prevented that ? What did I miss ? Could I have flanked them instead ? Crits ends frontal interactions quickly. But they cannot prevent real strategic plays. A random crit can snuff out an engineer. But his LV3 building remains because it's immuned to it. You need actual effort to take it down, no amount of crits is going to save you against a sentry you just walked into. "You shouldn't complain about the gap, you need to think a work around."

At least a Diamondback Spy has to actually, you know, play Spy once in a while to get crits. Old Ambassador made Spies with good aim unreasonably powerful with negligible drawbacks at all times.
@buraunii Жыл бұрын
Lower base damage and firing speed is not "negligible". All it does is bottleneck the type of gunspy you are allowed to be, in order to be good with the ambassador. Getting headshots with the amby is already a hard thing to do, especially on moving targets. Not to mention, stock revolver has always been a more relatable alternative, so the amby was never the "meta" option even back in the day. The nerf it got, only punished good gun spy players, bad gun spy players saw little to no real difference in their gameplay other than their random "shot in the dark" headshots doing little damage every once in a while. There is a reason why most people though the nerf was overblown.
@ThatWolfArrow Жыл бұрын
@@buraunii"but it was skill based" isn't a valid reason for something to remain in a broken state. And in the case of the old amby, the fact that spy could 2 tap 8/9 classes from across maps without the movement penalty that comes from scoping while also being able to cloak disguise didn't just make him "diet sniper", it arguably made him better than sniper since he was far more mobile and far less predictable. You didn't even need to worry about spy syndrome at those ranges. People hate the Diamondback for these exact same reasons, so a weapon that guarentees crits at any time isn't okay simpliy because headshots need skill to pull off.
@buraunii Жыл бұрын
@@ThatWolfArrow I am not going to argue anecdotal experiences and "arguably" remarks. Your OPINION is that the amby was broken. I disagree. I say it was not that broken. At the very least was undeserving of a nerf that severe. And I like how you are trying to equate the Amby 2 tapping classes, to the DB 2 tapping classes, as if headshots at a slower ROF, is the equivalent to 2 rapid bodyshots.
@tzorfireis425 Жыл бұрын
Old amby was objectively just OP Consider the fact that Sniper is universally regarded as one of the most powerful classes in TF2, and is widely argued to be extremely difficult to counter without another sniper, and all sniper has is headshots, and struggles with dealing with enemies around corners because he just lacks the mobility to get access to heads, and only has relatively few spots he can safely snipe from. All this makes him predictable and even if you don’t have any means of fighting him, you at least can find positions where you’re safe from him. Even if he kills you, you will know where he is thanks to the kill cam, and he’s not likely to stray far from that position by the time you respawn, since he’s really vulnerable when out of position. Now consider Spy. Spy can be anywhere thanks to cloak. He can also use disguises to make it less likely to be spotted before he makes a play, especially if he’s at a distance where you’re less likely to be focusing on him. He even can see the health of his enemies, so he knows exactly who he can shoot to instantly kill. Now give him the ability to deal 102 damage on command, and he becomes extremely dangerous with very little you can do to help your team if he kills you, because he can just cloak and disguise and now there’s no reliable way to even track him down if he’s far away. Both old amby and the diamondback practically make spy into sniper, except with better info and he can be anywhere on the map he wants, and the old amby has the advantage of him not even needing to worry about getting backstabs and revealing himself before deleting anyone he wants with no warning and no answer. Both are broken, it’s mostly a question of what specific flavor of broken each one is
@errentthought90577 ай бұрын
I liked how Vindictus did it. When you got a crit in that game you would then have access to some moves that were different to your usual kit, once. This means getting a good dice roll can expand the POSSIBILITIES of gameplay instead of just enhancing what's there. And you can make the choice to not use it if that would be a bad decision.
