Amtrak Special Trains and Private Varnish through the years

In light of Amtrak's executive decision last week to immediately discontinue special charters and movements of privately owned railroad cars (citing delays and distraction), here are clips from 2012-2016 of special Amtrak charters and car movements (including PVs and Amtrak-owned equipment) in Minnesota that I've filmed.
I do not have an opinion on this topic, as Amtrak (through Government funding) is its own business can run itself as it pleases. I also understand the impact it has on private car owners.
Amtrak has since clarified, allowing extended-stop terminal to extended-stop terminal private car moves if it doesn't delay the train and the train is not delayed prior to the cars being added or removed.
In the meantime, just enjoy the video.

Amtrak has eased up on it a little bit, if PVs are going terminal to terminal (i.e. Chicago to Portland) I think it's still okay.

Some were painted in IC paint yes, at the time owned by Iowa Pacific Holdings

What is the origin of the term "Varnish" ? Was there ever an era when wooden cars were just painted with varnish so that the beauty of the wood grain could be seen externally?
