Many people practice martial arts for sport, competition, and fitness and not with an exclusive goal of combat fighting skills or self-defense.

@@Greatmatscom the Martial connotation is War , Combat without a degree of realism actions become meaningless exercises with no abilities in Close -Quarter Hand to Hand self defense. The Classical Okinawan Kata are not for entertainment, but to teach the individual how to fight in a real life violent confrontation. Sadly the advent of sport have diminished the nature of Budo. Do you ever read on the history and culture of Okinawa or Japan? Do have a knowledge of Budo, Bujutsu, Bugei, have you ever been a student of a Okinawan or Japanese instructor?
