@Jeremy Stillwell Roger Gracie has an 8-2 pro record in MMA with only one loss by KO and the other by decision (definitely not a win but not necessarily a real loss either). I'd say his awesome fundamental jiu-jitsu has served him well.

I'm a 2 stripe white belt and I started to realize this was my exact problem. My guard was getting good but if someone (and there are many) passes my guard, suddenly I couldn't do anything but shrimp and hopefully reguard. Also I have NO passing game. So the for the last month, I've been forcing myself to pass even though I'm terrible at it because I know in the long run you can't be good at jiu-jitsu without that essential skill.

MobiusCoin Hey buddy, Blue belt here, Passing is a difficult game to master. Just learn some passes, drill the hell out of them and fuck it up. Keep making mistakes until you start passing.

I did bjj for two years and not once did any level practitioners ever sit out on beginner drills that we did at tgw beginning of every class. I'm still very low on the scale, but because those fundamentals were drilled so hard into our brains, three years out of practice i still tapout blue belts and hold off against purple belts until the 5 minute timer runs out at the gym that i go to to workout at. I'm not bragging because it was the refinement of my instructor that gave me and all my fellow students to repetitions necessary for knowing how to properly grapple. A well founded grappler is a force to be reckoned with when 9 out of ten schools only teach sport jiujitsu. I'm only a white belt. True bjj will take you places man

Your comments apply to EVERY martial art, not just BJJ. I'm a Kajukembo practitioner down in Houston. My instructor is ALL about the basics. We do basics every class. His mantra is the "cool stuff" are simply an extension of good, solid position, form, balance and technique. I appreciate your insights and hope to come play with you guys one day when I'm visiting up your way. Respects.

What you said about focusing on one thing and making it perfect really rings true to me. I have this whole thing about how connection is just like that. I think of it like this: if I'm not connected to my partner, The number of possibilities of things they can do is very high. As I connect, I reduce the variables. The more connection, the narrower the options. Simplifying by elimination of variables. This makes the path ahead much clearer.

I'll sometimes get sidetracked with the fancy stuff or something I've seen on KZbin. The latest greatest new guard or leglock series that's killing the competition; who wouldn't want to know those? I suppose most of us do it from time to time. Regardless of how well some of it works, I always find myself gravitating back to the basic need to know techniques. Someone like Kron is a great example of basic old school jiu-jitsu in action and proof that the fancy stuff probably isn't needed.

Have to know, good to know, what to know. Seems like systems info is void where it is a begginer basic in other arts. You can figure it out from there. However the breakdown of advanced techniques in specific postures is very good. It used to be small circle ju jitsu came from regular ju jitsu, now everything is small circle ju jitsu, and it seems like the perfect time to review large circle ju jitsu. There is three parts of the system and I'd say that it's development is slightly limited now I'm too old too wrestle anyway it was a little while ago I would have loved to understand what I was talking about now when it would have been some fun.
@mattbugg45685 жыл бұрын
The game plan really is the cause of this because it basically takes a line form on the opponent and then mutates it into a Simi system for advances and retreats to gain the end of the line.

If your bjj school don’t start on basic fundamentals and self defense, then you’re wasting your time and money. Sport bjj is cool but it’s generally useless in the real world.
