Rickson speaks philosophically as well as technically about jiu jitsu. You want to know what jit jitsu is all about watch his seminars online. I have retained three of his key aspects of the art. 1... Strong base 2... Proper breathing 3... Strategy

When it comes to learning from someone who isn't a black belt, I was faced with this when I started in December. In my city I wasn't able to find a school run by a black belt that gave a strong emphasis on self defense. But I was able to find a Royler Gracie brown belt who was heavy on self defense so I went there. A few months later he got his black belt from Royler! For me it was a decision on what I wanted to learn and I felt a brown belt teaching the proper self defense techniques was going to be more beneficial than a black belt teaching sport

Having watched GM Rickson teach a seminar and seeing so many people amazed at the subtle movements he teaches to improve techniques, I have to say I'm learning from the best possible lineage available. I hope that others realize this and pursue GM Rickson's teachings as much or more than so many students seemingly chase fancy attacks in the hopes of improving their abilities without perfecting the basics. Jiu jitsu will be all the better for it.

When you have to train with a blue or purple belt it is also important to know how long the person has been training. I always thought it was funny when I'd go to other schools and roll with the blue and purple belts. After they would sometimes look confused. Yeah I was "just a lowly 3-4 stripe blue belt" I had also been a blue belt for 16 years...lol I know some white and blue belts that were in the same situation and were tapping browns and blacks and had great ability to teach. Academy politics and experience should be taken into account. Side note: I have a new female student that came to me two weeks ago from the other academy in town. The teacher is a 1 stripe black belt. She had been training there for 3 months. Her first night at my academy I instructed the class to do shrimps the length of the mat and back. She said "I've never actually learned how to do that". Three months under a black belt and doesn't know how to shrimp? Just gonna leave that there.

coops active life Nope. I was out a total of around a year during that time. Trained at one place for almost 4 years and was never even allowed to test. Went to another place and as schools will do he waited around a year before giving me stripes. Got two under him, had a falling out (not jiu-jitsu related) Went on my own for a while. Found another guy, got another stripe, then he left town. Then finally got connected with Keith Owen and after a year got another stripe then purple. Been with professor Owen for around 3 years now. I always found places to train and ppl to train with even while between black belts so my training was consistent.

This answer is simple, his Idol was in fact Bruce Lee and he followed the same exact philosophy, take what's effective from various styles and discard what is not, he is truly a Living Legend, he never competed in UFC because Helio wanted to prop up Royce who was a great pure Jujitsu Specialist, Rickson was on a whole different level though, he was in fact a Mixed Martial Artists before the term was even a thing, Rickson was doing his own thing at the time anyways, I trained with Brad Hatcher for a few years in Maryville, TN who was trained by one of Rickson's Pupils, Hatcher's BJJ School is under the Governing Body of the Rickson Gracie Freestyle / Brazilian Jujitsu Umbrella of Schools or something like that, lol tried to make it sound fancy I'm sure that's not how you word it, but It's part of the Schools under Rickson's specific Brand, and a Great Brand it Is

Hickson disappeared when the rest of the world caught up to the BJJ technology. Props to him and the Gracies. They WERE the best and bright grappling to the popular world, but Where was he in the late 90s and 2000's. He certainly didn't fight the best.

Looking back and reviewing all your past videos and the history that you have gathered, I'm agreeing with you that he was ahead of the curve as far as innovating and competing.I'm also going to add he had alot of great training partners of all sizes and skill sets.- His family. Roger didn't get as deep of an environment. That would explain why the family decided he get his Red belt 4 years earlier than the history of the other Red belts. I think if Helio was alive he would of given the Red earlier then expected. Good vid

Rickson had his 8th Degree by age 35, I’ve been told. He technically got his red belt promotion on time. The criteria before very recently was 40 years, not 45 years, or 53 as in the IBJJF (I think).

@@ctsd623 In MMA, Catch wrestling and submission grappling dominate, and MMA-oriented BJJ is closer to them than Gi-Bjj. Even the high level BJJ guys in the UFC use a very limited set of techniques (single leg, RNC, etcetc) that existed before BJJ and avoid bottom position at all cost. No-gi Bjj is now dominated by leglocks thus by the 2 sports mentioned above.

Traditionally, promotions have been the privilege of black belt “professors,” only. But today, people of lower belts run their own schools. If they were to not promote their students because they know they’re not qualified, how long would their students stick around? On the other hand, If they promote one of their students, who’s to say they can’t?

Rickson is not the best jiu-jitsu fighter of all time. Helio Gracie was better than than his son Rickson, who admitted that in interviews in Brazil. And Rolls was way better in jiu-jitsu than Rickson, even family members like Carlson Gracie say that. By the way, Carlson was for sure the greatest innovator and coach in jiu-jitsu, his academy in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, was the Meca of jiu-jitsu in Brazil. It was a Carlson's student, Rosado (who became the first red belt of this academy) who made Rickson tap out during a training. Rickson doesn't like to talk about this.
