Just wanna add some context. It wasn’t for “whatever” reason necessarily that the federal government pulled out of the South in 1877. The election of 1876 was absurdly contested; the United States was probably close to another political fiasco at that point. To cool the tensions down (results still weren’t decided for the election and the March inauguration day was rapidly approaching) Rutherford Hayes’ followers struck a deal with Southern democrats to pull out federal troops if they just certified Hayes as the winner in a congressional group called together to decide the election. The Democrats took the deal and this resulted in the development of bigoted Southern policies as the federal government was no longer in their hair. It’s also why the man studying US history marked 1877 as the end of Reconstruction; the federal government pulled out in that year after Hayes took his position.

I really enjoyed the history portion of this episode. My daughter is learning about this period of time in her 5th grade class right now and I was happy to see that both tellings of the history (yours and the text book) aligned. I felt like the kids in her school are actually getting a solid understanding of the good and bad history of our nation, which is so important. I grew up in the south and my grandmother was there when the Little Rock 9 entered central high school. It’s incredible to look back on the complete 180 that many southerners have done since that time. While my grandmother was raised through segregation and prejudice, by the time she died, she had completely changed her perspective. Her best friend was a black woman named Kathy. They were neighbors and bonded over all of the good and bad times in their later life. They cooked for one another, watched each others grandchildren, and cared for each other through each of their own cancer diagnosis. On my grandmothers death bed, she clung to Kathy and cried. She apologized for the ignorance of her youth and asked for forgiveness for that horrible time in her past. There is a lot of good in our country - despite the bad times we have been through. I have hope for all of us - now and in the future. As one of the interviewees said- there is so much more to our nation’s history than its leaders.

I'm glad that the accounts of history match. In my 4th grade elementary school history classes, we were taught that the civil war was fought over states' rights. We were taught about the war heros who fought for their home state of Virgina, like Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, with the Emancipation Proclamation as a side note. The worst part was that our teacher herself was a black woman she just had to follow the state curriculum. It's amazing how, as little as a decade ago, we were still being brainwashed with Confederate ideologies at a young age.

I know Americans don't give a f about European stuff. But, honestly I'm over here watching all this like a dogfight or something. Like, over here, every country has like 6-10 parties, and almost never does one party win majority. Usually multiple parties have to gang up to get the majority and run the nation. Like, until a few days ago, Germany war run by three parties - greens, socialists and liberals. And if you think they're the same, oh no. The greens are really green, not some watered down, the socialists are actually red, and the liberals actually want to cut taxes for the rich and be all liberal about it and whatnot. Meanwhile, the US it seems like a lot of leaded gasoline sniffing people took politics up as another sport besides American football and baseball. And this just should not be like that. It will lead a country to ruin. Like with bombing middle east, or selling cocaine everywhere, I and most Europeans don't care what you do. But this political short circuit, or idiocracy will doom your entire nation, while the russkies still play cold war. Keep in mind, if Ukraine has to take a pleadeal because of trump, entire russia will see you as submissive losers, and the russians will try to fuck you again, maybe in alaska, maybe through cuba, but they will. And they'll know you have a leadership that is afraid to fight, and will rather make peacedeals that hurt the US....

@@Dunmerdog It's hard for me to say with much of an informed opinion because I lived in an all-white bubble in a suburban part of California (Pacific Grove, which is super expensive now). I only ever saw people of different ethnicities from a distance, and my child-brain wasn't exactly analyzing the concept. That said, we had an annual event in my hometown that continued up until fairly recently called "The Feast of Lanterns," in which some of the all-white high school girls would be chosen to reenact a supposed Chinese story about two starcrossed lovers ending with one turning into a dragon or something. This of course meant that it was considered completely acceptable to have a group of all-white people dress up in Chinese outfits and parade through the city, though it was argued this was homage to the Chinese railworkers who had a relatively large community in the general area. There was (and still is) another event called "the Butterfly Parade" which is supposed to mark the arrival of the Monarch butterflies on their annual migration path. I don't remember the exact context, but I have pictures of myself in third grade wearing a Native American headdress. I think all the third-graders were supposed to dress as Indigenous peoples, since each grade had a gimmick in terms of their representation in the town parade. I'll leave what that says about race relations in the 90s in terms of how it looked in upper-middle class suburbia to the individual reader.

My dad was born in 47 and a grew up in Texas during segregation. He got in trouble for trying to ride in the back of the bus, he got bullied because he had black friends in high school. I'm 34. We're not that far from that nonsense. Progress happens, but never overnight.

Promoting the same racial politics that the majority of Americans don't believe in or support. A bunch of well-dressed, privileged college kids talking about oppression they never faced completely disconnected with the struggle of the average American. Keep deleting this reply all you want KZbin or Andrew, I'll keep copying and pasting.

Damn as a european I didn't know anything about the reconstruction era until this video. I feel uneducated. depressing, what a lost opportunity

As an european i feel sad that trump doesnt understand, that any sort of halfassed peacedeal in ukraine will have all of russia looking at america, like it's a defeated submissive bitchboy of a nation. And the russians will keep fucking with it, and the Western nations. Only peace is achieved through superior firepower and kicking russian bullies out. I can't believe, I, an European have to teach fighting to Americans. And I can't believe the defeatist talk some ""patriots"" keep talking. Some real stupid loser talk, about having to negotiate bla bla bla. Ww2 vets would spit on these people. There are democratic friends of America out there, fighting a war of survival, and America can't decide if they can help or not? What kind of loser talk is that?

It wasn't a lost opportunity, every element of Civil Rights originated from that spate of Reconstruction Amendments. Prior to the Fourteenth Amendment there were practically zero restrictions on what state governments could do to their citizens. Historians refer to Reconstruction as our second founding for a reason. While most of this took nearly a century to fully come to fruition, we would not be where we are today without the steps we took then. This era was equally if not more critical to our current formation of government than our initial founding.
