As someone who started watching these shows to practice Japanese and has now watched almost every super sentai show I'm so happy to see this

Saw the thumbnail pop up for this and just froze wide eyed for a minute. Was NOT expecting this. With that said, I can understand why they chose this one. It's a fun series and feels reasonably indicative of the style and quality of the franchise and to some extent the genre overall. A small clarification is that Tokustatsu (translated as "Special Filming") is a fairly broad genre that basically started with Godzilla and generally refers to that use of live action, people in costumes with explosions and lots of SFX/VFX. Kamen Rider specifically has been around since 1971 and helped kickstart the "Henshin Heroes" sub-genre that lead a huge boom of similar types of shows and characters, including Super Sentai. Kamen Rider did take some major breaks for a while but it's been going yearly again since 2000, and the earliest seasons of the revived era are actually really good, if I thought you had the time I'd seriously suggest checking out Kamen Rider Kuuga but might be too slow a burn for just acouple episode commision.

I never thought you'd review Kamen Rider! Kamen Rider W is still my favorite of them. The monsters are silly but the character relationships are so good for this type of show and it's worth it for the character arcs. Crazy that Philip's actor was only 16-17 in this. The villains are not what you expect and in the end I felt so sorry for them. It's not as formulaic as you'd expect. And there's even themes of domestic abuse at one point which is wild for a show aimed at kids.

Thank you for getting round to this, the wackiness and bad effects are why I adore tokusatsu as a whole. Akiko is my favourite, mainly due to being the comedic character, but she also has sweet moments in future episodes. You’re right about Philip being neurodivergent (according to fandom) and Shotaro being based on pulp/noir detectives. My favourite aspect is the music - insert songs and opening, which gets me hyped anytime I rewatch.

coming from someone who mainly watched your videos for Doctor Who content, I'd say that Kamen Rider and the other Tokusatsu shows are good analogues to the kind of Sci-Fi Special Effects shows to Doctor Who. So it's really fun to see you covering this! W is regarded as one of the best of its era of Kamen Rider, but I haven't gotten around to fully watching it.

I think maybe she would be more into Ultraman? It seems closer to Doctor Who with the Sci Fi elements and the more experimental episodes

@27danjel definitely Ultra Q for something to relate to early Doctor Who. Ultraman is still a bit much Superhero to compare though

surprised tokusatsu didn't hit your radar sooner, it fits perfectly in the middle of the venn diagram of two of your top things: long legacied campy sci-fi with a noticeable effects budget, and superheroes. W was my first dive into the genre, not counting episodes of the western adapted 'Kamen Rider Dragon Knight' I caught on the tv from time to time. I think looking back, I now understand why exactly I latched onto Philip so hard😅

Ah! Growing up, Kamen Rider V3 was my Kamen Rider. Kikaida, Inazuman, Ultraseven, Zaboga, Kikaida 01were all preposterous, formulaic and so much fun! I think you nailed the genre, Vera.

You're not wrong on the formula of the genre. That being said, I still love it. W was my first proper series for Kamen Rider.

I was happily surprised to see Tokusatsu on your channel. My personal favorites have been. For Super Sentai: Jetman, Go-Onger, Shinkenger, Kyoryuger, and Gokaiger, kinda dropped off after Kyuranger. And as for Kamen Rider I really liked Fouze. Wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but it liked it. Gaim is really good too!

Oh wow, W (a.k.a. "Double") was my intro to toku back in 2014. I *love* this show, and I proceeded to watch every KR from W (2009) to Build (2017, which I also loved), and going back for a handful of the 00s series (Kuuga, Agito, Ryuki, & Kiva). W does start out very "monster of the week" (as do all KR series, since they're a year-long, weekly show) but there's definitely a bigger story behind it all. (Also it blows my mind to see how Suda Masaki [who played Philip] blew up both as a serious actor and musician over the intervening years)

THIS was something I never expected to see. I was actually thinking of commissioning another series from this franchise myself that I think would have been a better starting point, but guess I was beaten to the punch.

My favorite series is the one before double, Kamen Rider Decade was the first season I watched all the way through and I’ve recently just finished going through kuuga-kiva and now I’m doing a rewatch of decade and it’s still as awesome as I remembered.

Gosh seeing someone experience W for the first time makes me what to rewatch it, again, because knowing the end it's interesting to see the start from fresh eyes. It does follow a formula but like most KR it's able to keep things interesting and the main villain group is probably my favourite ones

As a kid, my best friend was really into tokusatsu, so we watched a ton of them, starting with Space Sheriff Gavan! Haven't watched any in years, so perhaps I check out Kamen Rider W to get back into this world.

I'm watching the anime sequel series, "Fuuto PI" , in the club I belong to! I recognized the character with the fadora! The animated character holds his hat just like that.

This was definitely one of my favorite Kamen Rider series! Philip is a good bean and I love his dress sense. The W in Kamen Rider W is pronounced "Double", which is confusing to an English speaker, but the pun is good. I should note that this isn't Japan's usual pronunciation for the Latin W, so it's more like...how ∀ Gundam is supposed to be pronounced "Turn A Gundam". It's easier for a Japanese viewer since the pronunciation is written underneath in kana.

On the point of Phillip and the whole Gender, sexuality things, It's very common in modern Japanese media to leave that open to the viewer rather than say one way or another, Much like in the west straight is looked at as the "Defult" but They are way more relaxed about stuff like that because they have way more to focus on that who has the hots for who.
