My yellow foot is in for the winter here in NYC. I used aquascape 45mil liner and covered that with geo textile fabric. Water from a fish tank growing all my plants overflows down to her enclosure filtered thru a stream down into her mini pond I made for her. She swims to the other side and back to her warm insulated box with a zoomed heat mat and leaves I raked from my front yard
@JokerrJKR3 жыл бұрын
The reason for the Geo textile is so the humidity is up to par for her

You have a unique, beautiful property, all of your animals have different personalities even the same breed! I always watch your videos but I rarely leave a comment! You have a beautiful house, beautiful animals, and it will continuously change year after year! I love watching the kids getting involved, I think Sophia will always love the animals, she is growing and her maturity is a little more than her brother. Boys take a lot more time to mature , I have two sons in their twenties and they are still needing to mature!

In the UK we have both outdoor and indoor because its just not hot/warm enough but when it is hot/warm enough we can easily transfer them outside although some do keep them outside all year round but the shelter will clearly be big enough for the tortoise to move around while the tortoise is locked in over the colder months. Mine are mainly indoor tortoises but are out in the hotter/warm months, Tortoise tables are easy to build i built mine my self i used 18mm thick plywood, glued and screwed, Painted in walnut with three coats which is a paint safe for reptiles, I used aquarium sealant. So my table is solid, I would recommend to have the table deep to allow a deep substrate, I use top soil again that is natural therefore say for reptiles, I have plants, a stepping stone which is the basking spot which is also a dome with a heat bulb i dont use any night time heating as my house as insulation so the heat remains within the house rather than escaping, i use a slate for feeding, Two bricks with wood on top which is the den, and a simple large painting tray for the water that is big enough for the tortoise to move around, I use a Arcadia T5 UVB + reflector. But all this is based on a Western Hermanns since this is the only tortoise i keep which is smaller than a typical Hermanns that you mainly see a Western is a sub-species and are slightly smaller although some refer them as dwarf hermanns but the reality is they are Western Hermanns T. hermanni, Unsure how popular the Western Hermanns is in America but in the UK you can find them although they arnt as common as the normal Hermanns and Horsefields ect but i happen to know a breeder that works with them along with other species of tortoise, But all the above is the same for the outside but on a much larger scale and in fact if your garden in secure then you can do what i do which is free roam with a hut/house in the corner where the tortoises retrieve to for the night which is locked.

The very first year when my Cherryhead female started to lay eggs, she would not bother to dig into the ground. She just dropped them while walking. I came out in the yard and found 7 eggs scattered across my entire yard. A year later she got smarter and did the real digging thing.

Still working on an outdoor enclosure for him. Thanks for the great advice. You have helped me considerably. I do you have kind of embarrassing question. Is it normal for Ralph to constantly attempt to mate with anything he can mount? Thank you Melisa

@laartje243 жыл бұрын
I believe he doesn't because the enclosures of the grown ups are not suitable for babies and the big outdoors are still a little too dangerous for them. That is why he uses those turtle cages and sometimes other cages.
