1984 acting felt a bit different, you can tell it's a movie and not real conversations while modern movies feel like more like real conversations

I’m sure someone far more educated than me knows the details, but I think one of the factors that lead to modern movies feeling like more realistic conversation is better recording quality that is able to capture more subtle performances. I know there’s lots of fantastic and subtle dialogue long before 1984 but a lot scenes still sound like radio or theater performances, like many of the older actors in 1984 would have been taught their craft and way of speaking by people who themselves learned when you had to speak very clearly and loudly in order for a microphone or live audience to hear you.

I get the love for the old one, its called nostalgia. But the new one is hands down waaay better. Lynch did not understand the assignment the way Villenueve did.

as an VFX learner, i love the visuals of the new one. also i love how the revised some of the designs of the craft especially the dragon fly one. on the other hand i think the old dune did their best with their limited tech so i give them credit as well

One of the many things I loved about the 2021 version from Villeneuve and co. is how it references ALL the previous adaptations. They respect them, and they pick up visual hints from the Lynch movie, from the Cryo adaptation, from the miniseries, and probably from the Westwood rts though I cannot remember (apart from the soundtrack, because Zimmer is incredible). It feels like it is the vision Villeneuve wanted to bring from the books, what he feels about them, and brought everyone with him in this journey. I already loved his Blade Runner for the same reasons, and I cannot wait for Dune second part.

Thanks for the comparison. On the whole, I prefer the cast of the first movie. The music was also a notch above. Although, the music in the new one is quite good. Having more hours of Dune with modern technology sure is nice though.

I love the Villeneuve version but I think Lynch captured a more alien world. The interactions in it are so odd and disturbing. The Mentats and their tech, the Guild Navigator, Baron Harkonnen’s skin. It’s all underrated. I’m sad for Lynch that he feels such sadness about it. Yes, the sfx are dated and it’s not one of his best films. But still, it needs to be acknowledged for what it accomplished and how creative it still is.

i mean nothing beats modern CGI no matter how nostalgic the first one looks. the interesting comparison is in 40 years when dune is remade again then those comparisons will be interesting.

That's not universally guaranteed. Fight Club and The Shining are two books whose movies survived extreme thematic and plot changes. It makes sense to wait and see if the new Dune can stand on its own as an "inspired by the book" work once the last film is released. Maybe in 2060 someone will make a Dune adaptation that is good AND follows the books closely.

While everyone praises the new movie which I thought it would be a new retelling of Dune but instead Villaneuve drew so much inspiration from David Lynch's version it's credit to his work in 1984 which is ahead of it's time. The new Dune has the right feel of realism and is truly amazing in visuals and atmosphere but it could only achieve that because of the 1984 film. Both movies I ❤.

I'm a fan of Lynch's version all the way. For one thing I was only 16 years old and it was still fun to go to movie theaters. And it just ask that Gothic steampunk feel to it that CGI cannot recreate.

I still think that the old Dune will keep up eons as a reference despite his age. Frank Herbert himself loved the movie and helped cast McLachlan and supported all the changes like the weirding module. I think he saw the longer version of the movie that it's more complete and even more accurate in some peculiar features than the new ones. He was happy about it because thanks to the movie his books would spread easier and start their life alone.

I can't fathom how people will praise the 1984 version just to shit on the 2021 one because it's new. With all its quirks, and some very memorable characters, the 1984 is a horrible pastiche that even Lynch himself hated deeply, and he had no connection to the source material. Even ignoring the poor CGI, that was very bad for its time, the characters are very one-note and Paul has absolutely no grueling inner conflict, which is the main force behind his character arc and what sets Dune apart from other messianic stories, while Jessica is a whimpering passive character. Then in the second half he's just a boring, standard hero with sudden super sayan powers, which is obviously not shown in this video but all of it is plainly abysmal. The editing is garbage too, the constant inner monologues make most of the scenes comical. There is some good to it, (I love the amphibian navigator) and it's in its train wreck way a classic, but it was a failed project. You can dislike the Villeneuve version as a Dune adaptation but in my opinion it's plainly good cinema made by a super fan of the books, and you can tell.

But 2021 benefitted from newer digital effects technology thats why it looks more well finished .... the 1984 version has bolder colors, textures and designs, if Lynch had today's technology he will undoubtedly make a bolder looking more impactful Dune than the hollow bland sand-colored thing Villeneuve came up with .... Jodorosky would too if he had secured financiers had he not insisted on spending so much money on a 100 hr movie. .... his Dune would have been more shocking and sensational ....

I have watched both Dune from the 80s and the new one from last year and i prefer the new Dune 🙂. Denis Villeneuve did an amazing job directing and telling the story of Dune . The visuals and the cinematography was beautifuI and the special effects . I can’t wait for the next part 🙂

Dune 2021 had better SFX, VFX, sets, costume design and make-up but Dune 1984, despite its share of flaws and oddities, was way more creative and unpredictably eccentric, more human acting and it had more charismatic types. Dune 1984's Harkonnen beats his counterpart of Dune 2021 to the dust. In fact, I had much of Villaneuve. I want Jodorowsky's vision now to my collection.

37 years apart, perhaps the 2021 version is more advanced visually due to the effects. The 1984 version is far more cohesive and unique stylistically, and all the characters are more memorable. The 2021 version is grittier but I don't feel the characters as much. The female leads like Jessica (Paul's mom), Gaius Helen Mohaim and Alia Atredis were styled very uniquely (medieval inspired) in the 1984 version. Same with the villains.

Agree, I feel like the characters in the 2021 version were a side note to the epic landscapes. Villeneuve remade Bladerunner and I still think the original Bladerunner is superior hands down. And same with Lynch's Dune his version was more surreal and fitting of the story, while Villeneuves looks very advanced the music score gets in the way of the story.

Villenueve's ideas seems to end up being kind of emotionally hollow and bland looking despite having the advantage of new technology .... he has a very safe and steady visual style but too safe to be exciting .... In contrast, Ridley Scott and David Lynch were bolder in their vision, they are known for creating new genres due to their ground breaking ideas and designs, coming up with brave new visions such as the xenomorph alien, defining the cyberpunk look, etc

2021 has new technology obviously its going to look more realistic but in terms of visuals, the 80s version has bolder designs, colors and ideas .... and the Jodorosky's Dune would have been even bolder and more shocking has it managed to secure the funding for making the movie ....

The 1984 version is garbage. It is execrable in every single respect, from middle aged Paul, to trashy sets, to cheap effects, more like appropriate for the 60's than from the decade that brought us Aliens and Blade Runner. I am stunned anew whenever I see someone offer a word in it's defense. Thankfully, in the 80's, it received the reception it richly deserved.

I think the characters overall were better in 1984 except the two Pauls both of whom are great, Duncan Idaho from 2021 is superior, the Baron is a toss up because 1984 Baron was an unforgettable but low IQ clown while 2021 Baron is a forgettable and generic villain. It really is incredible how much visual imagery Villeneuve took straight from David Lynch and frankly didn't improve upon (taking out the pug is actually a downgrade!).

I'm not a fan of the 1984 film. Scripting issues and poor effects (during the "worm riding" and end battle scenes) make for a painful experience. However, after watching the abysmal 2021 version I've actually come to respect what David Lynch tried to accomplish. The 2021 version of Dune is mind numbingly awful. I wish I could get those hours of my life back.

The 2021 Dune is basically the Disney Star Wars version of Dune with woke gender and race swapping. It was like a video game. Everything was CG. No sense of realism at all. I love Hans Zimmer but this score was way, way overblown and distracted from the movie. Most of the casting was horrible. Poe as the Duke? Aquaman as Duncan Idaho? The father of Chani and leader of the Fremen now a black woman? As a fan of the books and their depth and intricacy, I cannot recommend the 2021 movie. Honestly, despite its quirks and flaws, the 1984 Dune is superior. The Sci Mini Series still stands as the most faithful and well done telling of the Dune Story.

First time I see someone complaining about Duncan's casting, all I read and hear in other places is praises, I think it is a better fit than aquaman for Jason, tbh. And Oscar Isaac is on a roll, people just love him, I am sure his casting pulled a lot of people into seeing the movie, especially in Latin America. He is a great actor and he did an excellent job imo.
