Well from what I heard was that when Kandu 5 died they had Corky and Kasatka take care of the orphan Orkid though I still hate Sea World for doing this to all of the marine mamels but we can't just hate sea world since there's sea parks all over the world holding orcas dolphins beluga whales turtles penguins etc at this point in time people will end up stealing the marine mamels back and take them to rebilitation centers to retrain the orcas to hunt for food and to be wild again instead of being confind in a small bathtub like tank
@gizka9589
@gizka9589 3 жыл бұрын
@@ghostellaandghostvortex1549 as much as that would be great they can't there are only 3 wild caught orcas are alive at SeaWorld and are advanced in age and rest where born there. Not to mention the hybridization of many different orca populations that would never interact in the wild such as southern resident and icelandic hybrids, biggs and Icelandic hybrid etc. Most of these whales also have bad teeth which does happen in the wild but not to the point of being completely worned though admittedly not all of them have this going on with their teeth at SeaWorld and then you have to take into consideration that these animals have been raised partially by humans their entire loves especially if they been hand reared for part of their lives if they where released they might start following boats and begging for food even if trained to hunt on their on. In my opinion though I can see 1 orca in U S being put into a seapen ( lolita) and then orcas in the east being trained to be wild again as they haven't been in captivity for that long .

For people not completely understanding why Kandu did that to Corky. It was because Cokry was getting too close to Kandus calf orchid and she didn't like that and didn't like that Corky was trying to mother her baby. Corky's babies all died so Corky was just wanted to baby and proceeded to hang very close to Hindus baby orchid and Kandu wanted away from her baby and that's why that happened these animals should not be kept in tanks these animals should be roaming free this would have never happened in the real world and Kandu was a baby Orca stolen from the wild to begin with

Honestly so infuriating. 3 human deaths have been caused by Tilikum (the largest orca at SeaWorld) so far. Many of his offspring are deceased (either stillborn, reported "cause of death unknown", or stupid freaking circumstances inflicted upon these creatures by anyone who has any relation to or support of SeaWorld). Multiple Orcas, among other animals as well, have died in SeaWorlds care for a number of reasons including: unsafe or inadequate enclosures, tension and violence with other whales and/or trainers, lack of medical attention, or emotional and mental conditions. There is no record of an Orca killing a human outside of captivity. How many deaths, whether human or not, does it take for someone to realize this is not acceptable?

Kandu V was a dominant female Icelandic orca, caught in 1977 and kept at SeaWorld San Diego in California. On August 21, 1989, she attempted to rake a newcomer orca, Corky II, during a live show. She struck Corky behind her dorsal fin, the resulting impact fracturing Kandu's upper jaw and severing major arteries. The crowd was quickly ushered out, and after a 45-minute hemorrhage, Kandu V died. Her daughter, Orkid, was 11 months old at the time of the accident.

What's even sadder is that Orkid (The young calf around 0:55) is the daughter of Kandu V, the whale that died. Orkid saw the whole thing and spend the last moments of Kandu V's life with her. R.I.P. Kandu V, and I hope Orkid is happy today (Orkid is actually still alive as well as Corky II, the whale that Kandu tried to "rake")

Yes, Orkid is still alive but is also an abrasive Orca that has come very close to killing a trainer herself. Her and Splash attacked a trainer who ended up with multiple fracture's in her right arm. Look, I LOVE these Orca's as much, if not more than the next person and I believe we have learned a lot from them but it's time to let the one's a are good candidate's go back to THEIR home's and family's go and perhaps reunite the Pod's that SW has bred in captivity. It can't happen overnight but if we RIDE SEA WORLD they will have to make some change's for these Whale's and the rest of their marine life.

Kimberly Young I don't think it's them being "prisoners". I think this incident was caused by two different orcas (one was from an Iceland herd while the other was from somewhere else entirely) that caused the incident. I think Seaworld learned that keeping orcas from different cultures like that isn't a good idea.

I forget, isn't it a requirement (mandated by law) for all zoo enclosures to ample room for the animals to escape one another if a fight should break out? Does Seaworld even meet AZA (the organization that sets the standards for quality zoos in America) standards? If they do, they shouldn't.
@AnimalLeftist

As long as you're making money, benefitting your/our economy, you can factory farm any animal you like. Standards mean next to nothing. I love it that there is an person experienced in orca behavior in the video and all these regular people with keyboards are like "I must know better than an orca expert!!! Everything she says MUST be false because I don't agree with it!! I know everything about orcas" If you bothered to do any research you would know that 1: Orcas have extremely complex social hierarchy's and yes while some disagreements happen they have the entire ocean to go away from each other and cool off in. In captivity they don't, hence why injuries in captivity are worse than in the wild. 2: It's not useful to any group of animals to continually hurt one another, you can't hunt as effectively and that might lead to starvation. Simple logic. 3: This aggression and tension was artificial because SW orcas come from different pods with different languages and social customs. Hence they tend to not understand one another and this leads to heightened aggression and attacks. Seriously, do the research. It's not hard.

Here’s what happened: Kandu and Orkid live with another orca named, Corky. Corky was a female who had 7 calves, but, none survived. She adored Orkid because she was never close to a calf. Kandu didn’t really enjoy that so, one day, Kandu rammed her head into Corky. She might of hit a cell in her brain because blood poured from her. Orkid lost two of their most closest “Pod Members”. After that, they got a calf named, Splash I think. Slash had epilepsy. One day he had a seizure and rammed into the concrete walls... that’s all I know-..
@HitominekoFantasy
@HitominekoFantasy 4 жыл бұрын
Kandus broken jaw ripped through an artery. Orkid adopted splash because he was also an orphan and a hybrid like her. She protected him from slamming his head against the tank wall when he had seizures or would hold him to the surface to breathe and protected him from other whales picking on him but thats not how he died. He died from a perferated stomach ulcer. His stomach was full of filtrated sand that he often sucked on. Orkid and splash were also known to be very aggressive towards other whales and humans. Mostly orkid who is infertile. She cant get pregnant at all. So Orkid would later adopt an orphaned calf from tilikum and taima but he also died. Theres footage of her laying by his body as its taken away.

I definitely agree that Kandu was angry that Corky was with her daughter. That is something SeaWorld could have prevented by not creating that situation in the first place. You should research Morgan and the severe stress she's under due to lack of acceptance from the rest of the orca at Loro Parque. Tilikum also endured similar stress in his youth. So, this type of incident is not isolated.
@KatStudios
@KatStudios 3 жыл бұрын
You can't blame the whales for this in anyway. Corky II had 7 calves, with her longest(Kiva) surviving just over 40 days. She had four live births, a premature 3 month stillbirth, and 2 miscarriages(one which might have died from being transferred). Knowing that Orkid was going to survive, she tried to be a mother for the calf she never had in which Kandu V(Orkid's mother) most certainly didn't like. Kandu struck Corky II however it severely damaged Kandu instead(but did leave Corky II nearly blind in one eye). Nearly 11 month old Orkid followed her mother after witnessing the attack as Kandu fled into the back pools. Trainers called Kandu V in the medical back pool but injuries were way to severe and it was decided to have her just live her last moments out(instead of trainers trying to help her, she wasn't going to survive at they knew that). Around 45 minutes after that "attack", Kandu V's body sunk to the bottom(meaning she died). Corky II is the other whale in the pool, Knootka/Nootka/Newtka was also at SeaWorld San Diego at the time but she doesn't make an appearance. Knootka died in 1990. Orkid was now and orphan(her father Orky II died three days after her birth) and later went on to become the most aggressive orca in captivity. She's had 17 *known* aggressive attacks to date and Corky II helped raised her in Orkid's early years. Both females still remain. Orkid has never had offspring despite mating with every mature male that's come and gone from 1991. Her once only confirmed living relative, Kayla, died in 2019. Orkid has never moved out of San Diego and therefore they never met. Kalina, the original "baby shamu", was the first orca to survive a birth in captivity. She died in 2010(and did meet Orkid in 1990) making Orkid the oldest captive born killer whale alive to date. I can't be sure if Corky II and Orkid's relationship has gotten stronger. Orkid is seen with any member of now 9 whales(as of Amaya dying in August of earlier this year) but trainers almost always pair her with Kalia, Shouka, or Nakai. Corky II is almost always with Keet, Ikaika, Makani, or Ikaika and Makani together.

I think what they mean by not in the wild, is that when we take these animals from their natural inviroment, we affect their psychology enough to cause them this damage. They are fragile creatures. As we are. If a person is abducted, even if kept for years and conditioned, they owould not act as themselves. The same goes for these incredible animals.I really think people underestimate the profoundness of animals, their personalities, and how similar they can be to psychologicallyand emotional

You're on the right track Liz. I live in San Diego, & I remember seeing this on the news when I was a kid. I haven't been to Sea World since I was a child. I was actually invited to sing there with my college choir for 2 free tickets tonight, but after seeing the documentary "Black Fish," I decided not to. Their tickets are about $80 each, & I would have got in for free today, so I gave up about $200 worth of Sea World time for morality. Anyways, after seeing that Orca bleed to death, something didn't seem right about Sea World. Also, you're right about the complexity of the Orca. Cat scans of their brain, show that the area related to emotion is more evolved an Orca brain vs. a Human. That's likely why they have such a strong family bond. Taking that into consideration, it's awful how we separate them from their mothers, & send them

These people attribute the event to general factors, like their different ecotypes or the artificial environment stressing them, but it was something far more specific. Corky was getting close to Kandu's daughter, Orkid, who was fathered by her deceased Resident former mate, Orky. Kandu gave birth to a hybrid seed, and Orky's mate stole this seed from her. Imagine a widow losing her child to her husband's ex. Such things can happen between orcas. But Kandu's injury shouldn't have happened.

200th like plus I understand why Kandu rammed into corky I think it's because corky had birth 7 times and the longest a calf ever lived with her was 47 days and all corky ever wanted was to be close to a baby and that's why orkid went close to her and then Kandu went in and rammed corky because Kandu didn't like corky being close with orkid I feel so terrible😰😭

I feel so bad for 14 year old Kandu who died from a bloody hemorrhage. Kandu's poor baby girl, Orkid was less than one year old when her mother died. Orkid was 11 months old at the time her mother died. Kandu died a sudden, premature death at the young adolescent age of 14.

While I do feel bad for Orkid and Kandu, imagine how horrified Corky must have felt. She never got to raise a calf of her own and just wanted to be near Orkid if not as a mom, then as a friend at least. And when Kandu attacked her and bled to death, Corky realized that her wish to have a baby led to a little orca losing her mother. This wasn't what Corky wanted, but she caused the tragedy. She did get her wish come true, but at what cost? Now there's a baby orca who is an orphan, and she has to take care of her. And she did, but I can't imagine how much guilt she felt. I'm sure Orkid forgave her, since it was Kandu's decision to attack, but Corky will forever blame herself for this.

@ferretsarehardasfckk Corky2 did have injuries! She had quite a few good gashes, but whether that was caused before or after the initial deadly collision is being debated. Several witnesses say that Corky2 was hit, while others say they heard Kandu5 hit the wall. Naomi even says that ramming Corky2 caused the broken jaw. There are so many conflicting reports, that it's hard to know exactly what happened.

Got to say this : the baby circling around the dead one is it’s child. No they are not strangers. The reason the shale bleeds is because her baby was with another whale and when the workers let the mother in she got mad and attacked the other whale. Then she started to bleed. The workers shouldn’t let the mother in or let the other whale out before reuniting the mom and baby.

It's heartbreaking to see the poor calf with her mother. It doesn't surprise me that Orkid has had aggression issues. Kandu V was also tied to a lot of aggression issues with trainers so it is amazing to me that they would even continue to work with her and breed her. Obviously seaworld doesn't care about breeding for good temperament considering Tilikum is their main breeding stud.

@FutureOrkidTrainer I do agree with you. After five years of research on the orcas in Sea world, I think Kandu 5 didn't like the fact that Orkid was with Corky. Like any mother, a mother is protective of her own child especially the first one. Corky was and still is not the dominant orca in SWC. Corky is a good surggate mother to Orkid and other orcas.

Where did you get that I'm asking you to feel bad for anybody? The guests were ushered out of the stadium once the trainers realized how serious she was. Do you really think they would have had a large barreled gun in a family friendly marine park? Even then, do you think they would have set it off in front of all those people? This happened over 23 years ago! I doubt they knew about cetacean euthanasia and I'm certain they did not expect Kandu's aggression to escalate to what it did.

@FutureOrkidTrainer Yes, that is what happened. However in the wild, Corky would have gotten away. Also Orky never would have been separated from Corky so they'd still have been together and Orky never would have mated with Kandu.

I love seeing all the keyboard warriors in this comment section 6 years later like "This is the reason orcas shouldn't be in captivity" or "This is the stuff that needs to be exposed" First off, this happened over 20 years ago. This was not "hyper-aggression"; simply Corky wanting a calf of her own, and she saw that in Orkid. She wanted to be with her all the time, like a surrogate mother. Kandu didn't like that, obviously, which then resulted in this. How do we know this has never happened in the wild? Nobody can say that it hasn't, because we aren't there 24/7 in their world. "Infinite space" is complete bull to say, the orca won't swim away from the pod, the orca wants to stay with the pod so it doesn't get lost, as proven by Luna and Springer. Aggression exists in every shape and form in the wild, as it does captivity. That's part of life. These whales aren't complete strangers, or at least they aren't now. Looking to the past is pointless: things are different now, open your eyes! Mothers live with calves, brothers live with sisters, fathers live with calves. Were some calves separated? Yes, they were, but for specific reasons, like Kalina was being disruptive with the Orlando pod, or Taima was trying to drown Tekoa, because that's what Taima saw her mother do to Nyar because Nyar was mentally ill and had no chance at survival. The ones that were separated for unknown reasons is on SeaWorld's part and probably was a bad decision, but no mother ever "cried" for her baby, as stated in the ludicrous movie Blackfish. The people upset at this have no idea what life is in the wild for Southern Resident orcas. They say "SeaWorld has killed many orcas!" but without realizing that since 1965, 39 orcas have died in SW's care, while since 1998, 70 Southern Residents have died due to being hit by boats, starvation, or pollution, yet no one's there to help them! Captive orcas never have to worry about starving or pollution, or any of those factors; they have the spoiled life (or at least at SeaWorld they do)! I'm not here to start an argument, I simply had to get that out of the way.. it just doesn't settle with me, the diseased minds anti-caps have, but among them are logical ones; the very few ones with brains..

Could someone please do actual research, such as peer-reviewed papers, without resorting to mistruths and outright lies as quoted by the movie “Blackfish?” You all watch one inaccurate movie and all of the sudden you’re an expert in orca behavior? I know you all have good intentions and I truly believe your heart’s are all in the right place, but these tired quotes from “Blackfish” lack credence from the research field. From the first frame (the 9-1-1 call was the recording of a mock training drill. It was not the original call) The next clip was supposed to be an interview between the sheriff’s office and EMS. The name given for the EMS rescue personnel did not match any person who was present at the rescue. The portion where Kasatka was supposed to be crying in the tank. They have several people who were purportedly to be analyzing Kasatka’s cries. The situation did not match true events. The movie producers wanted you to believe it was Kasatka’s actual cries. Other orca were in that piece. Not Kasatka. It goes on for 2 hours. The motto of “Blackfish” seemed to be, “If you can’t provide the truth to your audience, make it up to fit the agenda!”
