Fun fact: In Greek mythology, there were many different kinds of tree nymphs, with Dryads being those associated specifically with Oak trees. Other types existed, back before common usage filed all tree nymphs under the "Dryad" banner. Others include the Daphnaie (Laurel), Meliae (Ash), and Maliades/Epimalides (Apple). These last ones are my favorite because, due to linguistic quirks, they were associated with both apples and sheep. So if you want to spice up a Dryad encounter, have the party encounter one that acts as a shepherd. Perhaps one or more of her flock have been taken by wolves (or _dire_ wolves), and the Dryad conscripts the PCs to do something about them. It can be handwaved that there's some malign influence driving the wolves to attack, since the Dryad could normally have turned the wolves away with words alone (because she's nature-attuned). Or maybe the sheep weren't hunted, but stolen by unscrupulous thieves. That the party are expected to pursue, to get the sheep back (if able). Maliades are often associated with the Hesperides, so the party could receive a golden apple as a reward. Whether it's a magical fruit, or a lump of apple-shaped gold, is up to you.

i once DM'ed a dryad encounter. The Dryads were were mourning the loss of some sisters through song and drinks, and would try to charm members of the party with the "charm person" and "suggestion" spells to convince them to stick around as long as possible to keep them company and cheer them up. The Party quickly caught on and engaged in combat. Only one Dryad managed to get away through Tree-stride, and one of the party members decided to pick up the habit of drinking Dryad-blood. First fresh from the two corpses they had just made, and then from the magical cup that could create any non-magical liquid that wouldn't destroy the cup inside it. eventually i had some fun and gave him an addiction to the stuff, with consequences if he went into withdrawal. Another DM eventually picked up the game and didn't want to deal with the addiction or the cup though, so she got rid of both of them pretty quickly.

We actually ran into that last encounter. We had a druid, and then me, who was custom class that is effectively a druid/battlemage/ranger guy. My our paladin suggested we use my character to find out whether or not the dryad was in fact poisoned and heal her while our druid went out into the forest to see if she could find the dryad's friends for a background check. The plan worked out splendidly.

My last campaign ended when my party entered a forested valley that had a village where people disappeared in the woods. We met a dryad and druid who told us that it was cus the forest was angry with the wood cutters, so it was killing them. The rest of the party decided to burn the forest down; my character one of two party druids decided not to, and went to aid the forest. Long story short, I ended up killing the whole party and destroyed the village. The forest then killed everything in the valley, save my character, cus the dryad was actually evil and wanted to spread its forest to all corners of the world, which I accidentally agreed to help with by planting cursed seeds across the land. Best use of a dryad villian ever XD!
